Chapter 108: Choose One of Two

Don't believe what people say; look at their actions.

In the past, Hino Harufumi was willing to believe Suruga Daichi, and believed whatever he said.

Until the last ambush, the cruel and undeniable facts were laid bare before him.

Suruga Daichi betrayed his own men.

Hino Harufumi was indeed blindly loyal; even now, he still believes Suruga Daichi has his reasons.

Moreover, betraying him does not equate to betraying the Sanrong Association.

In his view, there are differences between these two.

Kirihara Akira felt helpless, but was too lazy to correct him.

Anyway, Hino Harufumi has already agreed, and he will investigate whatever needs to be investigated.

Finally, Hino Harufumi found a breakthrough: his former younger brother, now Naoto Daimon, who was assisting the young leader.

Suruga Daichi may be difficult to deal with, but Daimon Naoto, who has just been promoted to the position of Wakagashira's assistant, has no real foundation.

Therefore, Kirihara Akira decided to start with this person.

Another point is that, after obtaining enough information, Kirihara Akira felt increasingly strange.

If someone wants to use the Kirihara couple to trip up the yakuza.

But why the Kirihara couple?

What kind of person would think that handing over a report to a gambling couple could pose any threat to a major underworld organization like the Shanrong Association?

If this material were truly genuine, and it were directly handed over to a high-ranking official, Shan Rong would have been eliminated long ago.

If the matter involved is trivial or there is no evidence at all, would they need to kill someone to cover it up?

This is the most contradictory aspect.

Kirihara Akira felt that her adoptive parents must be hiding some secret.

Do they have a large sum of cash on them that would make others envious? Or do they own some real estate?

Kirihara Akira discussed it with them, but they didn't come to any conclusion.

So the group simply tossed the documents into the nearby fire bucket, burning them clean, and turned their attention back to the board games.

Unfortunately, they didn't last long.

Kawasaki appeared before them; he had just gone out to be the lady's driver, and now he was back.

However, to their surprise, Kawasaki approached them and said, "Mr. Hayato is back."

After Kawasaki finished speaking, he walked away. Kirihara Akira looked at the board game they had just started playing and said, "Should we put it away?"

Mori Kiyoha said indifferently, "No need, he doesn't care about us."

"Who said that?" Mori Hayato's voice rang out from behind, and he looked at Mori Kiyoha with a beaming smile. "I'm back to see my two daughters, aren't I?"

Mori Shizue stood up and called out, "Father."

But Mori Kiyoha remained unmoved.

Hayato Mori walked over and tried to pat Kiyoha Mori's head, but she got up and avoided him.

Hayato Mori was always impeccably dressed in a suit and tie, his emotions unpredictable, except when he was with his daughter, when he was filled with helplessness.

He said, "This house is too big, so big that I need to be constantly busy to keep it running, so I know you're all justified in being angry because I don't come back often."

Neither of the two women spoke; only Asahi and Kanade handed over a folded, damp towel.

Hayato Mori took a wet towel and wiped the sweat from his forehead.

It was Mori Shizue who spoke first: "What brings you back today?"

"Someone gave me a day off," Mori Hayato said.

"Who can give the chairman a day off?" Mori Kiyoha couldn't help but ask.

"Your mother, my wife," Mori Hayato said with a smile.

"This is unusual; my mother doesn't usually get involved in company matters," Mori Shizue said.

"I do ask occasionally," Mori Hayato said. "Anyway, she's busy with her own things, and I finally have time to come back and have dinner."

Asahi Kasano said, "I'll go and prepare right away."

Hayato Mori looked at Akira Kirihara and said, "There's still some time before dinner, how about we chat for a bit?"

Suddenly being called upon, Kirihara Akira was a little surprised: "Me?"

"It's you." Mori Hayato said with a smile, "Don't be too nervous, it's nothing serious, nothing important either. Come with me to the study."

The setting sun cast sparse shadows, making the study somewhat dim. Sen Jiren drew back the curtains, and the ancient incense that filled the room wafted out through the window, its fragrance not diminishing but rather becoming even stronger.

Mori Hayato poured tea for both Kirihara Akira and himself, saying, "Please sit down, don't be shy."

Kirihara Akira nodded, picked up the teacup, and took a small sip.

Hayato Mori sat down on the sofa, took out a cigar, and looked at Akira Kirihara.

Kirihara Akira said, "Please go ahead, I can stand the smell of smoke."

"People say cigars and cigarettes are different, but I don't think they're that different," Mori Hayato said. "Smoking a cigar is troublesome; you have to cut it, prepare pine sticks, and light it. Some older people like to smoke cigars because being served is much more dignified than having a long, thin cigarette placed directly in their mouth."

Kirihara Akira didn't respond. Not knowing what kind of conversation this was going to take, he wouldn't speak rashly.

Mori Hayato chuckled and said, "It's not really that interesting, really. Whether you're from a prestigious family or the underworld, people who've made enough money in this world will always think of one thing, right? Do you know what it is?"

"You want fame, don't you?"

"Yes, I want a reputation, I want peace of mind." Mori Hayato cut his cigar and said, "Do you know how to cut one?"

"No," Kirihara Akira said.

"I can learn from that later," Mori Hayato smiled and said, "You've been in this house for about half a year now, haven't you? How's it been?"

What does "learn it" mean? Kirihara Akira didn't quite understand.

I always felt that Mori Hayato's attitude towards me was quite friendly. I wonder if it was because when I first entered this house, every step I took was an enemy, and the contrast with now is just a misperception.

"My wife treats me very well, and I have no worries about food and clothing." Kirihara Akira said sincerely, "If it weren't for my wife, I might have starved and slept on the streets after my parents passed away, and I would have been targeted by the underworld."

"Hmm." Mori Hayato listened without comment, then suddenly smiled and abruptly asked, "Do you like Shizue or Kiyoha?"

As soon as Kirihara Akira took a sip of tea, it choked out of his nostrils.

He coughed violently, and Mori Hayato, seeing his reaction, laughed heartily, saying, "Don't be nervous, I wasn't asking about your mouth. What's that Chinese saying again, 'A gentleman seeks after a woman's love'? I was like that when I was your age."

"Your pronunciation is quite standard." — This was a lie, Kirihara Akatsuki said against her conscience, adding, "How could you be so sure I'd like any of them? I wouldn't dare!"

Mori Hayato grinned and pointed at him, asking, "No guts? Really not?"

"No guts, really no guts," Kirihara Akira said.

Mori Hayato's expression gradually changed, his smile turning serious. He said, "I'm not entirely joking with you, Kirihara-kun, why don't you marry one?"
