Chapter 140 The Warden Has No Hostility
"Captain! Captain!"
Jiang Chi was in a daze, his consciousness gradually rising from the bottom of dark water, his face burning with pain.
He frowned, trying to open his eyes, but his eyelids were too heavy to lift.
"Wake up! Wake up!"
Jiang Chi recognized the voice as Li Hao's. He wanted to wake up, but his body wouldn't obey him, as if something was pressing down on it.
Then he suddenly remembered the burly man charging at him, the iron hammer crashing down on his head...
And when he turned around, he saw that white mask!
Jiang Chi suddenly opened his eyes and sprang up from the ground.
"The warden is here! He's really here! He's still in Tide Prison! Run!"
After he shouted that, he realized he was sitting on the ground with Li Hao and Chen Xiaoxun squatting in front of him, both of them covered in dust and dirt.
The two people looked at him with somewhat strange expressions.
"Run!" Jiang Chi shouted anxiously again.
Li Hao gave Jiang Chi a wink and gestured with his chin behind him.
Chen Xiaoxun also winked at him, his lips moved as if he wanted to say something but didn't.
Jiang Chi paused for a moment, then slowly turned his head.
There were two rows of people standing behind him.
The one in the lead, wearing a white mask and a black trench coat, had his hands behind his back and was looking at him.
Behind the mask was complete darkness, and no expression could be seen.
Standing next to him was a burly man in full heavy armor, holding a heavy machine gun, followed by fully armed prison guards and shield bearers, all with their guns at the ready.
Jiang Chi's mind went blank for a second. The warden? The bodyguards?
He leaned back unconsciously, his arms supporting him went limp, and he almost fell back onto the floor.
Li Hao helped him up from behind.
"Don't, don't move..." Li Hao whispered, "They're not here to hit us."
Jiang Chi felt he couldn't understand Li Hao's words anymore. He understood each word individually, but when put together, he couldn't understand them at all.
What do you mean the warden isn't here to beat us up?
His shocked and terrified gaze met the warden's eyes, then he quickly looked away and turned to look at Li Hao.
The warden looked at Jiang Chi for a few seconds, then waved to the side.
"Let's go," he said, his voice not loud.
He then led the way out of the small room, followed by his personal guards.
After the warden and his gang left, the pressure in the room suddenly disappeared.
Jiang Chi then turned around and asked in a low voice, "What happened? What's going on?"
Li Hao breathed a sigh of relief. "You scared me to death! I thought I was going to die. Where did your memory stop?"
Jiang Chi flexed his aching and numb wrists, then rubbed the dull ache in the back of his head. "I still remember the sledgehammer soldiers rushing in and smashing my riot shield..."
Li Hao wiped his sweat and continued, "The hammer soldier rushed in and smashed you and your shield away in one blow. Then he swung his hammer a second time. Just when we were about to lose control, the warden came out from the door behind you."
"Just one shot, and the hammer soldier was sent flying!"
Jiang Chi looked back. He remembered this door; he had tried to push it before but couldn't because it was locked.
"This door?" He clutched his head. "Wasn't that door locked before?"
"It can't be opened," Chen Xiaoxun said. "I suspect the warden and his men have been in that room the whole time, and they locked it from the inside, which is why it can't be opened..."
"You've been inside the house the whole time? Then what were we saying in this house just now...?" Jiang Chi opened his mouth wide, but didn't finish his sentence.
Chen Xiaoxun looked embarrassed, shook his head, and said, "I definitely heard everything!"
"Then why doesn't he hit us?" Jiang Chi still didn't understand. Wasn't the warden supposed to shoot anyone he saw?
Li Hao continued to explain, "When the warden came out, he walked up to you, then reached out and patted you on the shoulder, and then you collapsed."
"I thought he had killed you," Li Hao said. "At the time, I also thought the warden would definitely attack us. When we saw you fall down, we opened fire."
Jiang Chi's eyes widened: "You two fired at the warden?"
Li Hao and Chen Xiaoxun exchanged a glance and nodded together.
"I guess it's open now..." Chen Xiaoxun whispered from the side.
Jiang Chi looked at the two of them, a little confused. "What do you mean by 'considered'? And then what?"
"And then..." Li Hao gave a wry smile, "and then I got dealt with."
He pointed to his arm, where the sleeve was torn, and his face was covered in bruises and dust.
"I only fired two shots, and the warden stood still and didn't even look at me."
"The bullets were all blocked by that shieldman's shield. He charged at the warden from behind with his shield, blocking the bullets and knocking me to the ground, the gun flying away too."
Chen Xiaoxun looked down at his gun: "I was in an even worse situation. Before I could fire a second shot, I was pinned down. That machine gunner was so big, I don't know where he got the speed from, he was in front of me in a flash, elbowed me down, and stomped on my chest, pinning me down so I couldn't move."
Jiang Chi stared at the two of them in shock, his mouth agape. Li Hao and Chen Xiaoxun both had bruises, but no serious injuries.
"They didn't kill you?"
"No," Li Hao said. "They just pinned us to the ground, and then the warden slowly walked over."
He paused for a moment, as if recalling something.
He stood before us, looking down at us. I thought the warden would have to do it himself, but instead I heard him say…
Li Hao cleared his throat, trying to imitate the warden's tone, "We need to kill Raven, that two-faced liar, don't get the direction wrong."
"Is he here to kill ravens?"
"Yes, that's roughly the gist of it," Li Hao said. "Then he told us to get up, and his men returned our guns to us."
Jiang Chi felt that this matter was becoming increasingly outrageous.
"Then we were released, and we realized that the warden and the others meant us no harm. They rushed over to check on you," Chen Xiaoxun said. "That's when we found out you had fainted. We gave you a first-aid kit and called your name for a while before you woke up."
Jiang Chi leaned against the wall, digesting the information for a while.
"So... the warden didn't come out to beat us up?" At this point, Jiang Chi's missing memories began to piece together again.
He got up and saw the thing on the table that looked like a communication device.
[Operation Raven Hunter is underway. Please escort the warden to eliminate the Raven forces.]
"I remember now, it seems I accidentally pressed this! Look!" Jiang Chi said to Li Hao and the other man.
The two then leaned closer to examine it. "Operation Crow Hunter? Is this a special mission?"
"What do you mean by escorting the warden? Does he need me to escort him?" Chen Xiaoxun asked in surprise.
"It seems that after starting this mission, we're on the same side as the warden. Our goal is to kill Raven and his gang!" Jiang Chi analyzed, combining the warden's words.
"Not only do I get the perk of having the warden as my teammate, but I also get paid?" Chen Xiaoxun finally realized, and danced with joy.
"The scariest person in this prison is the warden! Now he's not only on our side, but he's also helping us fight monsters! We're taking off!" Chen Xiaoxun exclaimed excitedly.
"Uh, that seems to be the case. The gunfire outside seems to have subsided compared to before. Let's go out and take a look," Jiang Chi suggested.
The three of them, having finished getting ready, then opened the door leading to the corridor.
With a creak, the door slowly opened...
"!"
The scene before him shocked Chen Xiaoxun!
The warden and his guards hadn't left at all! They were just standing quietly at the door.
"You're out? Let's go then, I'll take you to fight monsters."
