Chapter 109 Shenzhen University
The car drove to Shenzhen University.
Several square stone pillars stand by the roadside, topped with the Shenzhen University emblem. The entrance is spacious, and a security guard sits in his booth.
The car was stopped at the entrance.
A middle-aged security guard in uniform walked over and knocked on the car window.
"What do you do?"
Lin Dong rolled down the car window and handed him a cigarette.
"Master, I am a student from Shenzhen University, and I am here to see Director Chen of the Admissions Office."
The security guard took the cigarette, his expression relaxed slightly, but he still didn't let him through.
"Admissions Office? Director Chen?"
"Yes, Director Chen Guo."
The security guard nodded, turned around, went back to his post, and made a phone call.
After saying a few words, he put down the phone and came out, his expression no longer so serious.
"Go inside, Director Chen is waiting for you in his office. Go straight, turn right when you see that red building, and drive a little further ahead, and you'll arrive."
Lin Dong nodded.
"Thank you, Master."
The car window rolled up, and the car slowly drove into the school gate.
The campus is bigger than I imagined.
The road is lined with palm trees, their trunks straight and their leaves providing a canopy of green shade overhead.
On the grass, some students were sitting and reading, some were lying down and sunbathing, and a few were throwing frisbees.
Li Xiuzhen pressed her face against the car window, her eyes unable to take it all in.
"Ah Dong, this school is really big."
Lin Dong looked out the window.
"Yes, it's very big."
This was also his first time here.
Li Xiuzhen looked outside again.
"The environment is so nice, look at those trees, those lawns..."
Lin Guodong didn't speak, but he also turned his head to look outside.
The car had been driving for seven or eight minutes, and we still hadn't arrived.
Li Xiuzhen clicked her tongue.
"This school is huge, it's been open for so long and we still haven't arrived."
Lin Dong smiled.
"That's how it is in all universities."
Li Xiuzhen thought about it.
"So, you'll have to walk half a day to get to class from now on?"
"There are bicycles."
Li Xiuzhen nodded and continued looking out the window.
The administration building is a red four-story building, hidden behind several old banyan trees.
Chen Guo was already waiting downstairs.
He was wearing a light blue short-sleeved shirt. When he saw the black Mercedes driving up, he took a few steps forward to greet it.
The car came to a stop, and Lin Dong got out.
Chen Guo glanced at him.
That's the kid.
The Stanford Games, Steve Jobs' speeches, the company in Futian, the factory in Dongguan—all belonged to this young man.
Now that he's standing in front of me, he looks even younger than in the photos. But his eyes don't look like those of a child who just graduated high school.
He stretched out his hand.
"Lin Dong, I've finally been waiting for you."
Lin Dong grasped his hand.
"Director Chen, I've heard so much about you."
Chen Guo had a big smile on his face.
"You really made Shenzhen University proud by being at Stanford. The university leaders were so happy after reading the report that they couldn't stop smiling for days."
Lin Dong smiled as well.
"I was lucky, I just happened to run into them."
Chen Guo waved his hand.
"What luck? That's skill."
He glanced at the back seat, where Li Xiuzhen and Lin Guodong had also gotten out of the car.
"Hello, Uncle and Aunt! You must be tired from your journey!"
Li Xiuzhen was a little flustered.
"Hello Director Chen, it's no trouble at all..."
Chen Guo smiled and ushered them inside.
"Come on, let me show you around the school first. Shenzhen University is so beautiful, is this your first time here?"
Lin Dong nodded.
"first."
Chen Guo said as he walked.
"Then we should take a good look. Although Shenzhen University hasn't been established for long, its environment is excellent."
Chen Guo led them on a walk around the campus.
The library, which was just renovated last year, has glass curtain walls that reflect the sunlight.
The teaching building is where Lin Dong will take most of his classes from now on.
The laboratory of the School of Electronic Information is on the fourth floor, and its equipment is among the best in Shenzhen universities.
Chen Guo stopped when he passed by Xixing Lake.
"This lake is a favorite spot for students. They can see people everywhere, whether they're doing morning reading or taking an evening stroll. Those egrets over there have been living here for years and are no longer afraid of people."
After touring the campus, Chen Guo led them to the car.
"Alright, we've finished looking at the school. Let me show you where you'll be staying."
The car exited through the back door and turned onto a tree-lined road.
The road is narrow, with old banyan trees on both sides, their branches intertwining overhead to form a green tunnel.
Sunlight filtered through the leaves, scattering golden fragments across the ground.
After driving for a few minutes, a black iron gate appeared at the end of the road.
There was no sign at the entrance, and only one security guard was sitting in the guard booth.
Upon seeing Chen Guo's car, he nodded, pressed a button, and the iron gate slid open gently.
The car drove in.
Li Xiuzhen was stunned.
A winding path stretches forward, with bamboo planted along its sides.
Through the gaps in the bamboo forest, you can see several houses with blue bricks and gray tiles, each standing alone and undisturbed by the others.
In front of each house is a small lawn with stone benches, flowers, and a few fruit trees.
It's too quiet.
It was so quiet you could hear the wind rustling through the bamboo leaves.
Chen Guo parked the car on the side of the road without turning off the engine.
"There are four households in this area. Those two buildings over there—" He pointed ahead, "are where the parents of our school's students live. They're all very nice people, but they're not home much, so you probably won't run into them usually."
He then pointed to the other side.
"That building over there is also inhabited, and the children there are from our school. This building—" he pointed to the one in front of him, "is for you."
Lin Dong stood at the back. He wasn't an ordinary parent. People who could afford to live in a place like this weren't ordinary people.
Chen Guo turned around.
"Lin Dong, want to grab a bite together? There's a pretty good restaurant near the school."
Lin Dong thought for a moment.
"Director Chen, I can't make it today. I still need to move some things over and tidy up."
Chen Guo nodded.
"That's right, let's get settled first. Next time, next time for sure."
He smiled.
"Okay, I'll be going now. Call me anytime if you need anything."
He got into the car, started the engine, waved to them, and the car slowly drove out of the yard.
Lin Dong stood at the courtyard gate, watching the car disappear into the bamboo grove. Something was wrong. The Stanford incident certainly boosted Shenzhen University's reputation. But while he was happy, did it have to be this extreme?
A detached house with four households, nestled in a bamboo grove—this kind of setting isn't for a newly enrolled student.
unless……
"Ah Dong!"
Li Xiuzhen's voice came from the courtyard.
Lin Dong turned his head.
Li Xiuzhen stood under the osmanthus tree, looking up at the leaves covering the tree.
"This place is wonderful. Look at these trees, this yard..."
She spun around, her face beaming with an undisguised smile.
Lin Guodong stood beside her, not saying a word, but a smile played on his lips. It was indeed nice; gray bricks and tiles, osmanthus trees, stone tables and benches, so quiet you could hear the wind rustling through the bamboo leaves—far better than that three-story house back home.
Lin Dong glanced at them. Never mind. Whatever the school thinks, as long as Mom and Dad like it here, that's fine.
He walked over.
"Mom, I've had the moving company deliver the things. You rest for a bit, I'll make arrangements when they arrive."
Li Xiuzhen nodded.
"well."
She paused.
"Ah Dong, you'll sleep here tonight too, right? The bed's all made up."
Lin Dong shook his head.
"No need, I have room over there."
The office renovations are finished; I slept in the office after returning from San Francisco that day. But I can't keep sleeping like that. Once this period is over, I need to look at an apartment.
But this place is nice too. It's quiet, clean, and there's an osmanthus tree.
We'll see where they like to stay then.
