Top Student: Wasteland Technology Invasion
Chapter 8 Arriving on Time
After having lunch at the East District cafeteria, Lin Chuan prepared to return to his dormitory to rest for a while and check some things.
Pushing open the door to dormitory 303, Lin Chuan found it empty. Taking out his laptop from his backpack, he first searched for Professor Lu Zhiwei.
I didn't know until I searched that Professor Lu holds the title of "Leading Talent in Scientific and Technological Innovation" and also won the 4th Morning Star Mathematics Silver Award in 2007.
The Morningstar Mathematics Prize is known as the Fields Medal of the Chinese community, which is enough to demonstrate how strong Professor Lu's academic ability is.
In addition, Lin Chuan also searched for many professors from the School of Mathematics at Yueyang University for comparison.
Professor Lu just mentioned that he has mentored students from Princeton University and Cambridge University.
"It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say he has students all over the world; he has both academic talent and connections. I really wish I could choose Professor Lu as my mentor."
"Forget it, the results of the 'Seeking Truth' class aren't out yet. It's too early to think about these things. Let's deal with the more important matters first."
"Next, we should either search for crossbows, protective gear, and drones, or check out the preprint platform..."
After some thought, Lin Chuan decided to postpone his exploration of the wasteland world.
After all, buying various equipment not only costs a lot of money, but also comes with other unknown risks. The risks in the wasteland world are currently under control, and it would be more dangerous for him to blindly leave the safe house to explore.
Lin Chuan opened the arXiv.org website and began browsing the electronic preprint system.
This is a free preprint platform established by the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the United States and operated by Cornell University. Its main function is to share academic papers that have not yet been formally published. By using timestamps, authors can easily determine the priority of their work.
Lin Chuan plans to upload the paper first, and then study how to publish it in a journal.
"Tap, tap."
Footsteps could be heard outside the dormitory.
"Qiqi, do you think I should transfer to another department? Is this math department even a place for humans? I couldn't answer a single question on the entrance exam for the Qiushi Class this morning."
"Old Sun, do you think I'm that much better than you? I still got 149 on my college entrance exam in math, not bad, right? But this time my confidence was really shaken. Hey, Old Lin's in the dorm!"
Yuan Qi peeked out and was the first to spot Lin Chuan browsing the web on his laptop. He immediately shouted, "Old Lin, what kind of dirty stuff are you doing? Do you have to be so dramatic?!"
Sun Ang leaned closer, following Yuan Qi's directions to look at Lin Chuan's computer screen, a hint of confusion on his face. "Qiqi, what's this all-English interface for, Chuan Chuan? What's arXiv for?"
Yuan Qi explained, "This thing is called an electronic preprint system, and it's used for writing academic papers."
"Writing a thesis?! Chuan Chuan, what are you doing?!" Sun Ang's eyes widened.
In his mind, academic papers were something that was completely out of touch with his current learning situation.
The School of Mathematics at Yueyang University has gathered a large number of geniuses from all over the country, including students who scored over 700 points in the college entrance examination, achieved a perfect score in mathematics, or won gold medals in the CMO.
Even students like that would need to be in their second or third year of university to write a thesis.
And Lin Chuan has actually started writing now?
Is this the right way to run a math department, where everyone should just work themselves to the bone?
"I got some inspiration from reading, so I'll try to put together a paper," Lin Chuan replied without looking up.
"Ahem..." Sun Ang suddenly remembered the important matter, "By the way, Chuan Chuan, you left quickly after the exam this morning. Do you know that there's a classmate of yours in our math department? This guy is absolutely awful."
Lin Chuan released the mouse, turned to look at Sun Ang, and asked, "You mean Zheng Quanxun? He was in the competition class. I interacted with him a few times when I was in No. 2 Middle School. What's up?"
"This Zheng Quanxun is no good. After the exam, didn't Assistant Li stay with you a little longer? When Assistant Li praised you, Zheng Quanxun started babbling on and on. Isn't he despicable? What does it have to do with him?"
Hearing Sun Ang say this, Lin Chuan recalled Zheng Quanxun.
He was a student competing in the competition, while Lin Chuan, a high school graduate, had little interaction with him.
However, in a scholarship competition during high school, Lin Chuan won the first-class scholarship, while Zheng Quanxun only won the second-class scholarship.
Zheng Quanxun's family was of modest means, and he always felt that Lin Chuan had taken his spot, which is why the two of them didn't get along.
Thinking this, Sun Ang patted Yuan Qi on the shoulder and said with a smile, "But I want to give special praise to Qiqi here. Back then, Qiqi stepped forward and overpowered Zheng Quanxun. With his skinny arms and legs, how dare he confront Qiqi?"
Yuan Qi scored over 680 on the college entrance exam, with a math score of 149, but Lin Chuan knew that his greatest strength was in sports; he could even run a 5-kilometer sprint at a pace of under 3 minutes per kilometer.
In addition, Yuan Qi is tall and strong with a muscular build, so it's no wonder Zheng Quanxun is not afraid of him.
Yuan Qi waved his hand, "Old Sun, I'll feel embarrassed if you praise me like that. The four of us in room 303 are brothers when we get together. How can I let outsiders speak ill of Lao Lin?"
As he spoke, Yuan Qi forced a smile, patted Lin Chuan on the shoulder, and said, "Old Lin, you don't need to be too touched. I was just angry at the time."
Lin Chuan laughed and said, "Got it, got it, got it. How about we arrange a meal at a lakeside restaurant?"
Yuan Qi: "Hey, I knew Boss Lin was generous. By the way, Lao Lin, when we handed in the papers this morning, Assistant Li was standing next to you, I didn't see clearly, how many questions did you actually do?"
Lin Chuan casually replied, "Nonsense."
"Holy crap, are you even human?! I only wrote four questions."
Yuan Qi looked surprised and couldn't help but wonder.
Room 303 was full of high school seniors preparing for the college entrance examination. Yuan Qi knew that Lin Chuan scored 145 in math, which was neither high nor low.
Logically speaking, everyone's math skills shouldn't differ this much.
How exactly did Lin Chuan manage to do that?
Or perhaps Lin Chuan simply filled in all eight questions, without necessarily answering them correctly.
That should be it...
Sun Ang covered his face. "I couldn't even finish the first question. You guys are too inhuman. I don't think I can stay in the Department of Mathematics. I think I should look into how to transfer to another department."
Yuan Qi: "Old Sun, think about it from another angle. At least you don't have to worry about your math homework, right? Old Lin can do it, of course he'll show it to you!"
Sun Ang: "That makes perfect sense. Maybe I should observe it some more."
"Buzz buzz buzz".
The phone vibrated, and Lin Chuan took out his phone. He glanced at the unfamiliar number on the screen, thought for a moment, and then, without avoiding his roommate, pressed the call button.
A voice came from the other end of the phone, "Is this Lin Chuan? I'm Li Zheng, Professor Tang Beichen's teaching assistant. We met this morning."
"Hello, Teaching Assistant Li."
"Hello, I'm calling to inform you that there's a small group class on introductory Lie algebras tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM in Room 102, Building 2, Hainayuan. Professor Tang would like you to attend. Is that convenient for you?"
Lin Chuan was slightly taken aback.
These past few days he's been studying in the wasteland world, having skimmed through the course "Modern Algebra," which covers introductory Lie algebra and has already begun to touch on group theory.
Normally, this is a course that third-year students would take.
I never expected that Professor Tang would actually let me go and attend his lecture.
It seems that I have been selected for the Qiushi Class.
Lin Chuan was in a great mood, which meant that his efforts over the past few days had not been in vain.
Lin Chuan certainly wouldn't refuse such a good opportunity.
University is different from high school; while you have more freedom, you also have to earn all the resources yourself.
He now possesses a fake wasteland, real academic genius system, making academic achievements absolutely beneficial and harmless.
With that thought in mind, Lin Chuan replied, "Okay, Assistant Li, I'll be there on time tomorrow morning."
