In the western corner of Giethoorn stands a wooden cabin. Like other ordinary houses, it is a brick-and-wood structure. After all, the town is near Nightmare Forest, and the western part of the town is inhabited by commoners, so many people choose this type of building.
However, the house looked rather dilapidated; not only were the exterior walls unpainted, but the roof was also covered with a layer of green plants.
A man wearing a brown hooded top, hunched over and dragging one leg, moved to the door of the wooden house. He glanced around discreetly, then took out his key.
He waited for a while before opening the door, and then he saw a person sitting on a chair by the door.
The man was dressed in gleaming armor and held a crossbow in his hand, pointing it at the man outside the door. "Ricardo, it's been a long time."
Ricardo knew he had been discovered as soon as he heard this. He stopped hunching over and pretending to be lame, and instead stood up straight and twisted his neck. "Captain of the Guard, what brings you here to see me?"
"Come in and talk," Jules said with a smile, gesturing for the other to enter the house. At the same time, the sound of armor clashing came from behind Ricardo.
Ricardo raised his hands and walked into the wooden house. Two guards behind him slammed the door shut and stood guard at the door, watching the surroundings warily.
"You actually managed to find me," Ricardo said, frowning.
"Not hard to find, don't underestimate the security team." Jules got up and walked to the middle of the room, his crossbow aimed at Ricardo the whole time.
"Where did they all go?" he asked.
"You mean Martel and the others?" Ricardo stared at the crossbow in the other man's hand. "They're probably all dead."
"They're all dead?" Jules asked, somewhat surprised. He knew the Storm Brotherhood's strength; while not comparable to the Earl's guards, they were certainly not ordinary adventurers. "You're lying to me. Have they hidden themselves too?"
"No, I'm not lying to you. When I left, I saw my teammates being killed with my own eyes," Ricardo said calmly.
"You entered the forest? What happened?" Jules asked with a serious expression. The Storm Brotherhood was almost completely wiped out, which was a very important matter.
"We entered the forest, preparing to explore a ruin. The map to that ruin was found by Martel on a corpse." Ricardo looked at the half-burnt candle on the table, trying to recall what had happened. "He and Chigo searched for a long time and finally decided to take some people to see it. I didn't care at the time, but I didn't expect there really was a ruin."
He took a deep breath and slowly exhaled. "The ruins are very dangerous. There are a lot of slimes and mind-eating monsters that caught us off guard. Many people have lost their lives, but we can't do anything about it. You know, humans can only stay in the forest for 3 days. Even though we gave everyone 2 bottles of sedative potions, we still can't guarantee that we can explore the ruins in one go. If we can't explore them all in one go, the news might leak out, and then we don't know who will come."
After Ricardo finished speaking, he glanced at Jules, his meaning clear.
"And then you were all wiped out?" Jules ignored the mocking look in the other man's eyes.
"Yes, they're all dead." Ricardo nodded.
"What is it?" Jules asked.
"Goblin." Ricardo glanced at the rooftop, closed his eyes, and the painful memories of his teammate's death kept replaying in his mind these past few days.
"Goblins?" Jules said in surprise. This answer was completely unexpected. He had thought that the other party would encounter a group of minotaurs wielding large axes after entering the ruins.
"Yes, you're surprised, aren't you? We didn't believe it at the time either. We were so tired of killing these little green goblins. We killed them with knives, with arrows, in games, in all sorts of ways. But in the end," Ricardo gave a bitter laugh, "we were wiped out by goblins."
"Are you telling a story?" Jules stared intently at the other man, still finding it hard to believe that the Brotherhood had been wiped out by goblins.
“No, Captain, they are very strong. They can set traps, scheme against others, and design defensive fortifications. They can also throw explosive iron balls, and some of our people were killed by those things,” Ricardo said seriously. “Among them are 3-meter-tall trolls, goblins who can use strange spells, and even goblin shadows.”
"Shadowmen? Aren't those guys supposed to only recruit humans?" Jules asked, sounding somewhat surprised. "How come there are goblin shadowmen?"
"It's true, Chigo was severely injured by the Shadow Ones and ultimately died from the maw of the Brain Eater." Ricardo wore a sorrowful expression. "Before we set out, we thought victory was assured, and even when we saw the goblins inside, we thought the outcome was a sure thing, but in the end..."
"They all died inside, but you escaped beforehand?" Jules asked, looking at the other man.
"Yes, I ran away." Ricardo finished speaking, sighed, and glanced at the roof. A squirrel's head peeked out from a small hole.
"Goblins..." Jules repeated several times, "I've heard from adventurers these past few days that a large group of goblins is quite active. I need to report this to the Earl so that we can deal with them as soon as possible to prevent them from breaking out of the forest and plundering the surrounding villages."
"As for you, I can't be sure if what you say is credible," he called out towards the outside, "Come back to Black Lion City with me to see Master Philip, and let him decide."
Before long, several guards wearing steel armor with black lion heads carved on their chests escorted Ricardo away, followed by a red squirrel.
…………
"Are you crazy? No, ah—" An adventurer looked down at the spear piercing his chest, then spat out a mouthful of blood, swung his longsword with all his might, and slit the throat of his teammate in front of him.
The two of them fell to the ground. Then, the adventurer, whose throat had been cut, made a "hoarse" sound on the ground. Several wisps of white smoke rose from his back and gradually merged into a short human figure.
Scarface floated in the air, glancing only at the few dead adventurers on the ground. Standing in front of him were more than 30 goblins, his tribe.
"Take their equipment," he snapped, his voice sharp as metal scraping against glass.
Several goblins stepped forward and looted the adventurer clean.
"Keep searching for the next batch of goblins," Scarface ordered. He had searched several caves but hadn't found any goblins who knew about the Blast Fruit, nor had he found the green egg. However, he felt that his current forces seemed to exceed the number of his clan before he died, and once he found the green egg, he would definitely be able to kill him.
Scarface looked around, pointed in a direction, and then prepared to shrink underground, but at this moment he felt a strong sense of restraint, as if his body was bound by something.
"Still haven't found it?" a voice echoed in my mind.
Scarface knew it was the human woman who had summoned him, and he said respectfully, "Not yet, Master."
"Hiss!" Several red arcs of electricity appeared, and Scarface howled in pain. The sharp sound made all the goblins around him cover their ears and run away.
"Find it quickly, no slacking off," the voice warned.
"Yes, Master," Scarface replied in a pained whisper.
Before long, he stopped feeling pain; the burning effect on his soul had worn off. "I am the leader now; I don't want to suffer anymore."
Scarface's face was grim as he viciously glared at his subservient subordinates, who dared not look at their leader's terrifying face.
"Wait, human woman. Once I find your target, I'll turn around and threaten you. If you dare to hurt me again, I'll kill your target." The scarred man grinned sinisterly, feeling that he had found a way to control his opponent.
"Go find someone!" he roared, startling the goblins around him who all dropped to the ground.
They quickly got up and ran in the direction the scarred man had pointed earlier.
Scarface watched the goblin run away, a satisfied smile appearing on his face.
"I am the leader." After saying that, he disappeared underground.
…………
"A bunch of goblins?" Charles looked at the handwriting Mary had written on the intelligence report. "What powerful figures have appeared on the outskirts of the forest again? And goblin ghosts too?"
He found it hard to believe that a large number of goblins would appear on the outskirts of the forest. Adventurers often roamed there, and a goblin group of more than 10 people was already quite formidable. Now, a large group of goblins had gathered together.
"Are these adventurers slacking off?" he sighed. "Or has the Storm Brotherhood recruited all the best ones, leaving only inexperienced adventurers?"
However, he couldn't be bothered with this matter. He was doing quite well now, and adventurers were unlikely to venture deep into this area unless they were veteran adventurers coming directly towards him.
"If we don't make contact with those goblins, it will be very difficult to deal with them if that old man Valentine really sends his guards or knights."
Charles knew that the Knights and the Guard were equipped with full sets of steel plate armor and chainmail, and that they had undergone long-term training, making them highly disciplined in combat. Compared to the Brotherhood, whose equipment was a motley collection, they were more professional and stronger.
"The grenade fruit can still deal with the Brotherhood, but its effectiveness is greatly reduced against those guys," he thought for a moment and wrote it down in his notebook, "I need to replenish some more Blazing Glue."
"The security detail is looking for the Storm Brotherhood?" Charles continued reading. "It should be the Earl's mansion looking for them, too bad you can't find them."
He chuckled. "Mary's right. Let's not sell those equipment for now. Let's see if we can sell them somewhere else."
"Leader!" Broken Tooth ran over and shouted.
"Hmm, what's wrong?" Charles put down the intelligence report and looked at him. He had previously instructed Broken Tooth to take a few goblins to try to venture a little further east to see if they could find anything. He didn't expect Broken Tooth to return so quickly.
"Found something strange," Broken Tooth said, gesturing with his hand.
"Strange thing?" Charles was a little puzzled. What could be strange?
"Hmm, we found one," Broken Tooth thought for a moment and said, "A big ant."
