My Post-Apocalyptic Territory

Chapter 52 Observations

As the convoy drove through the city gates of the shelter, Tang Yu clicked his tongue.

Being so arrogant will easily bring retribution. In comparison, it's rare to see someone with his strength remain so low-key.

Tang Yu, of course, had no intention of meddling in other people's business.

although,

When he arrives in Lindong, he'll probably be up to something.

Most of the survivors in this area are local survivors of the East Coast Shelter.

These people went out early every day and returned at dusk. They were allowed to pass through the city gate after showing some kind of identification.

Other survivors like them, who were arriving at the Eastern Shelter for the first time, lined up at the city gate.

A makeshift shed was erected, with a banner hanging above it that read: "Identity Registration Office".

There are also some directional signs and related instructions set up nearby.

New survivors need to register here before they can be allowed into the shelter. The registration process is simple, only including basic information such as name, age, and gender, plus a description of their special skills, supposedly to facilitate job assignments at the shelter.

There were three queues at the registration desk: two regular queues and one special queue.

The special queue is reserved for Awakened Ones and professionals. These professionals include medical personnel, researchers, skilled workers, and those with combat or command skills. These are all talents that are currently scarce in the shelter, and the Eastern government has given them considerable preferential treatment.

There is only one special queue, but there are far fewer people in line than in the other two queues. This queue is like a VIP channel, which is a privilege and also a disguised form of recruitment.

of course,

In Tang Yu's view, besides recruitment, many awakened individuals are inherently short-tempered. If they were to obediently line up with the survivors on the other side, who are like refugees, it might lead to some kind of conflict.

Tang Yu, naturally, didn't have a bad temper and joined the queue behind the VIP entrance.

Having grown up in poverty, Elaine didn't seem uncomfortable at all, and Grayblade remained as unremarkable as ever... well, that's assuming we're not talking about the movie.

The three of them attracted attention even in the VIP passage.

This special passage is frequented by many professionals who are scarce in the shelter. However, these people, like the survivors in the other two queues, are now dressed in rags, looking like refugees. Only a very few awakened individuals look somewhat spirited, but compared to Tang Yu and his two companions, they appear quite destitute.

Especially Yilian, although she was wearing a hood that covered her long, sky-blue hair that looked like a two-dimensional character, the mere glimpse of her face was enough to attract the attention of others.

Tang Yu had originally thought that someone would come up to chat or even provoke him, but nothing happened... Come to think of it, most of the ordinary survivors didn't even have the courage to glance at them, and even the rather confident Awakened Ones wouldn't dare to cause trouble under the military's nose.

He shrugged.

It's obviously very difficult to trigger things like showing off and getting slapped in the face.

The VIP queue wasn't long. It had been over a month since the apocalypse, and fewer and fewer survivors were arriving at the shelter. Before long, it was Tang Yu and his two companions' turn to join the queue.

Sitting at the other end of the desk was a man who looked like a military officer. After observing him for a moment, he said, "Two Awakened Ones and one ordinary person."

The officer-looking man pointed at Yilian and Gray Blade, then at Tang Yu. A young clerk beside him took out three forms: two for Awakened Ones and one for Ordinary People.

Tang Yu touched the tip of his nose. He had originally intended to say that he was an Awakened One, but he never expected that this officer-looking man was actually being used as a detector.

Indeed, since Awakened Ones can sense each other's presence, the Eastern Shelter obviously wouldn't just let ordinary people infiltrate the special ranks, so they arranged for an Awakened One officer to sense it.

Although Yilian and Gray Blade had concealed their auras, they could still sense them to some extent. He, however, was in an awkward position. What was an aura? Could he eat it?

He decided to remain silent. Proving his Awakened status would be too troublesome. Before the apocalypse, the most annoying thing was going through all sorts of procedures. Right now, he'd better just fill out the forms and leave.

I filled in the information haphazardly and then handed it to the clerk.

As expected, the officer looked at Elaine and Grayblade and asked, "Are you interested in joining the military? The military offers the best benefits in the entire shelter, both in terms of welfare and the potential for personal growth..."

"Of course, joining the military requires a series of assessments. If you are interested, you can fill out an application form first."

The voice was very mechanical, clearly indicating that this person had said the same words at least a hundred times.

Without even thinking, Yilian and Grayblade shook their heads.

The officer then stopped asking questions.

In his mind, both Yilian and Grayblade were just newly awakened Awakeners, not yet worthy of being recruited, and he was only asking them routinely.

As for Tang Yu, the officer shook his head slightly. He could tell at a glance that Tang Yu was not the kind of person who often fought, but since he had registered with two other awakened individuals, he wouldn't hold it against Tang Yu for writing "combat personnel" on his professional personnel list.

…………

Stepping into the shelter, the bustling crowd felt like entering another world.

The street directly opposite the south gate is very wide. Even though only military vehicles can pass through on weekdays, it is still very lively. Survivors dressed in different clothes come and go, and many people shout and sell their wares, just like a vegetable market.

Especially since this is the time when many survivors who went out are returning, some people simply find a spot and start selling their day's catch.

Tang Yu was somewhat dazed.

The buildings on both sides of the street were undamaged and still looked like they did before the apocalypse. If it weren't for the fact that many of the survivors around him had sallow complexions and clothes that looked like they hadn't been washed for days, he would have really felt like he had returned to the pre-apocalyptic world.

There were also some survivors at the city gate, carrying nothing in their hands, just staring at the gate. Sometimes when a survivor walked in, these people would quickly surround them, while other times they would remain indifferent.

Several survivors' eyes lit up when they saw Tang Yu and his two companions, and they immediately surrounded them.

A thin young man in tattered clothes spoke first, "Boss, boss, do you need a guide? I'm originally from Lindong Town, and I've watched the shelter being built up bit by bit. Putting aside other skills, I'm very familiar with this shelter. For just two pounds of grain, I can take you all over the shelter in one day."

The young man was dressed slovenly, but compared to the other survivors, he was still relatively energetic. Tang Yu thought for a moment, then took out a palm-sized can of meat and threw it over, "Is this enough?"

The skinny young man hurriedly caught the can of meat, his face still showing astonishment. "Enough, enough, no, no, it's too much. I only meant two pounds of the most ordinary grains."

He seemed somewhat at a loss, while the other survivors on the side looked both envious and annoyed.

Tang Yu had the young man accept the canned meat, and as they walked, he asked, "Could you tell me a little about the Lin Dong Shelter?"
