Chapter 55 Goblin Horde in the Dark

"You all take a rest first, and we adventurers will take over the guard duty."

Claire gestured to the two militiamen standing next to the cabin, and they both stretched and loosened up.

"Alright, but isn't it a bit inappropriate for the village to only send the two of us to the East Gate to help you?"

"That's enough. Look, there hasn't been a sound all this time."

Claire pointed to Lindsay, who was standing by the east gate of the village, and was using the monster ability [Dark Vision++].

He observed with his eyes that the area from the small hill outside the east gate down to the flat grassland was completely silent.

Was it just my imagination?

Just as he was beginning to doubt whether his eyes were deceiving him, the shadows of three creatures suddenly appeared on the mountainside.

The small figure moving in the darkness, though somewhat distant and difficult to see clearly, was definitely not human in size.

It's most likely a goblin.

"Come here, there seems to be a goblin..."

"The enemy is here?"

"Broken Arrow!" someone cried out, simultaneously attracting the attention of two militiamen.

"The goblins have attacked the east gate?"

"Quickly, quickly, go and inform the village chief!"

"Don't go," the "Goat" shouted, stopping the two.

He walked to the fence: "There are no goblins here. It's pitch black outside and we can't see anything."

"Broken Arrow" climbed up the wooden watchtower and stared down the hillside for a while.

"Captain, there's nothing there. Are you sure you're not mistaken?"

Claire walked up to Lindsay and said, "Lindsay, don't be so tense. We're guarding the east side of Linxi Village. It's obviously easy to defend and difficult to attack. Those goblins wouldn't be stupid enough to attack the village from here, would they?"

Linsel glanced outside again; the three figures were gone, nowhere to be found.

But he still insisted: "In any case, you all need to focus. I just saw a few suspicious figures."

Goblins are monsters with night vision; we're in the light while they're in the dark, so we still need to be careful.

"Ugh, it's been hours, I'm so bored."

Claire twirled her dagger, but just then, a militiaman came running from the west side of the village, looking extremely flustered.

"Many goblins are attacking West Gate! The sheriff said he needs two adventurers to come and help!"

Upon hearing this, the three teammates immediately gathered around.

"Captain, those green-skinned guys are finally here."

"Squad leader, we'll follow your orders. Who will go?"

Lindsay pondered for a moment.

I'm definitely going anyway; I can't miss the goblin mutants that might appear.

There's not much activity at the east gate yet, so we've left the agile Claire and Broken Arrow to guard it.

"Uncle 'Goat,' I'll go with you to provide support. Brinnan, you two stay here and come to the West Gate to let us know if anything happens."

"Okay, be careful."

The two men, carrying their own equipment, followed the militia. After running for only a few minutes, Lin Sai first heard shouts of killing coming from the east gate of the village.

He saw dozens of people standing in two rows behind the large iron gate, an archer formation composed of Linchui Town guards and village militia, firing arrows at the gate under the orders of Sheriff Will.

"Three, two, one, release!"

Dozens of arrows, along with those fired by militiamen from the two watchtowers at the west gate, flew out from above the large iron gate in a flurry. Then, the archers took arrows from their quivers and prepared to fire again.

Lindsay and "The Goat" approached Will: "How are things now?"

The sheriff turned around: "Linsey, you've arrived. The last two volleys of arrows killed several goblins, and one of them was even riding a dire wolf. It seems they've received reinforcements, and their numbers have increased."

However, based on my experience, those green-skinned scum are only launching a probing attack right now. But judging from the current situation, there must be a leader directing the goblin horde, and I expect they'll launch a full-scale assault soon.

He then addressed the dwarf Ink, who was guarding the wooden fence: "Tower Shield, use your darkvision to see if the goblins are approaching the village again?"

The dwarf replied in a gruff voice, "Sheriff, I didn't see anything with my own eyes!"

The four members of the Silver-ranked squad were standing behind a wooden fence. Except for the dwarf who kept a close eye on the activity outside the fence, the other three looked somewhat confused.

"These guys charged in twice and then disappeared. What happened?"

"I can't see them either, Captain," the female ranger grumbled. "Otherwise, we could just take them out with our bows and arrows."

"You can fire blindly, Judith," the mage suggested, holding his staff.

"That's too unskilled. I have to wait until the enemy shows themselves before I shoot," said Judith, a silver-ranked adventurer.

Are dire wolves and wolves the same species?

On the other hand, Will immediately refuted Lindsay's question: "No, although these two mutated animals are very similar, only the dire wolf is a goblin's mount."

"Goat" stood by the wooden fence: "I feel like something's coming, even though I can't see those guys."

Lindsay rushed over and, through the gaps in the wooden fence used for looking out, saw a rather astonishing scene.

Beyond a few torches planted in the grass outside the west gate of the village, hundreds of goblins were hiding in the darkness, with the goblin at the front seemingly positioned so that the dwarves could not see him.

Among them, there were more than a dozen goblins riding dire wolves, more than a dozen of them were larger goblins, and the rest were ordinary goblins.

It seems these goblin commanders are actually quite intelligent; they know how to exploit line of sight.

However, Lindsay's [Dark Vision++] can see a distance of 30 meters. They can fool the dwarves, but they can't fool Lindsay.

Linssey opened the panel to see the situation on the other side.

[Goblin, Monster, Health: 30/30, Armor: 0]

[Big Goblin, Monster, Health: 50/50, Armor: 0]

[War Wolf, Demonic Beast, Health 90/90, Armor: 30/30 (Fur)]

He was already looking forward to the monster abilities he would gain from killing the dire wolf.

"Mr. Will, those goblins are hiding in the darkness, about twenty meters west of the torch stakes, and fifty to one hundred meters outside the village."

"Linse, are you sure?" came the sheriff's questioning voice from behind.

"Yes, fire the arrows quickly!"

At Wel's command, the militia and guards adjusted their shooting angles and power, and the arrows were fired again, falling at the distance Linse had estimated.

"Hey, the green-skinned dwarves are coming!" Dwarf Ink shouted as he saw several goblins dodging arrows and running ahead.

The goblins' scattered formation was disrupted by the rain of arrows. Several goblins were unable to dodge the arrows and were hit, with several screams escaping from the air.

Linsel saw goblin shamans suddenly emerge from the deeper darkness, swaying and performing a ritual to summon monsters.

"One, two, three, four, five... five goblin shamans!"

The dwarf turned around in astonishment: "What?! Five goblin shamans?! Moradin, how did you see that?!"
