Chapter 6, 5th Monster Ability

Linsset dared not relax; he listened carefully to the sounds.

The creature in the water seemed very interested in the torches burning on the ground; it was swimming toward them.

Linsel wavered; if the unknown thing in the water was some kind of dangerous being, he couldn't afford to mess with it.

However, his desire to acquire more monster abilities also pulled him back, preventing him from giving up the opportunity.

Linsel sheathed his iron sword and untied his spear. He gripped the spear, which was slightly shorter than him, with both hands and slowly probed closer, using his max-level 2+ [Darkvision] to try and observe.

The thing emerged from the water, its two withered hands clinging to the passageway; it looked like a dead person.

Lindsay saw a semi-transparent panel appear above the other person's head.

Drowned, Monster, Health: 80/80, Armor: 0

The monster's name is Drowned.

Now that he knew the other party's background, Lindsay was no longer afraid.

This drowned corpse didn't look very powerful, but its appearance was quite grotesque: its skin was rough, its mouth and eyes were crooked, it had no hair or nose, and only a shriveled eye was staring blankly at the torchlight.

At this moment, the drowned corpse seemed to have noticed Linsel's presence. It dived back into the water and slowly swam toward them.

Lindsay's hands, gripping the spear, were sticky as he stared intently at the monster.

When the other party comes over, stab them with a long spear and push them into the water.

Just as the monster surfaced, Lindsay, following the standard movement he had practiced at the training camp the day before, thrust his spear down and pierced the humanoid monster's throat!

However, the opponent did not die in the water as Lindsay had imagined. It seemed unaffected and its two withered hands grabbed Lindsay's spear shaft, trying to pull Lindsay into the water.

[Drowned Corpse, Health: 59/80, Armor: 0]

Linsset held the spear tightly, his strength matching that of the monster, neither able to gain the upper hand.

However, the sweat on his hands made the spear shaft slippery, reducing friction and making it increasingly difficult to grip.

Realizing that the spear would inevitably slip from his grasp, Lindsay simply released it all at once, and the drowned corpse sank into the water due to the reaction force.

"Damn it, the spear is gone!"

Linsset cursed and took two steps back, searching for the monster in the water again in the darkness.

Then he saw the monster rise to the surface again, but his spear seemed to have fallen off and was floating away with the current.

He had no choice but to draw his iron sword and prepare himself.

The drowned corpse clung to the edge of the passageway once more.

Linsel did not immediately attack the monster. He knew that the length of the iron sword was not an advantage, and if he rushed in, he would likely be dragged into the water.

The best time to attack is when the opponent has just climbed onto the passageway.

He took a step forward, placing his right hand, which held the hard iron sword, in front of him.

The drowned corpse has surfaced.

At the same time, Lindsay struck first, slashing at his opponent with his sword.

*Thud!* The monster's left arm was severed!

[Drowned Corpse, Health: 51/80, Armor: 0, Left Arm Missing]

The drowned corpse lost its balance and swung its other arm at Lindsay, but Lindsay was faster.

Another sword strike, this time to the head!

Because the spear had previously created a large gap in the monster's neck, Lindsay's sword was aimed directly at the drowned's neck.

Crack.

As the iron sword sliced through, the tendons connecting the head and body severed, and the drowned corpse's head flew off, falling back into the water along with its body.

Why are there so many strange things in this sewer?!

Linsel took a breath, complained a bit, and then he received a notification from the panel.

[Monster Compendium Activated: Drowned zombie has been defeated. Choose one ability to gain.]

The fifth monster ability!

Linsel became excited again. If the fourth monster ability he had just acquired was expected, then this fifth one was an unexpected surprise.

[Water proficiency: Learn to swim, and increase your breath-holding time underwater by 30 seconds]

[Stasis but not dead: When your health drops to 0 or below, if you have injuries to any body part and your head is not missing, the injury to that body part will be aggravated by one level (prioritizing the least injured body part), and your health will then recover to 20% until all body parts are severely injured or missing.]

[Domination Enhancement: When you are under the control of necromancy, your Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution increase by 2]

It's obvious he'll choose between the first and the second.

[Water ability] It's somewhat useful, but not much. Linssay could swim in his previous life, so the improvement is minimal.

Then all that's left is "stiff but not dead".

Linsel remembered that during the fight with the drowned corpse, the corpse did not bleed at all. When he severed its neck, he felt that the drowned corpse's body was very different from that of a living person. It was a kind of flesh that could survive without relying on blood supply.

Will his physical body be affected after using this ability? He didn't know yet.

However, judging from the description of the monster's ability, it seems to be a very powerful ability. As long as it is not beheaded, it can be immune to multiple fatal attacks, at the cost of gradually injuring various parts of the body until it is completely severely injured.

Never mind, I've chosen it!

[Successfully selected [Stemless but not dead]]

After selecting the monster's ability, he opened the panel and viewed the [Monster Encyclopedia].

--------

1 Giant Dire Wolf [Robust], 2 Dire Wolves [Darksight], 3 Goblins [Darksight+]

4 Giant Rats [Dark Vision++]

Description: Threat level 0.2. Mutated from ordinary rats, it is larger in size, more ferocious, dislikes sunlight, and has higher intelligence than ordinary rats. When together, they will form a formation to fight enemies. They often appear underground or in dark places.

5. Drowned corpse [stiff but not dead]

Description: Threat level 0.8. Aquatic type of zombie that does not decompose in water, can swim, is relatively rare, and often appears in deep, dark waters.

--------

Lindsay noticed that both monsters had a threat level of less than 1.

He remembered the guards he had met earlier saying that the giant dire wolf was roughly equivalent to the strength of a bronze-level adventurer.

Currently, the adventurer ranks he knows, from lowest to highest, are: Porcelain, Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold...

The giant dire wolf has a threat level of 3, so by analogy, a threat level of 1 is roughly equivalent to the strength of a porcelain-level adventurer.

Unfortunately, he couldn't know the monster's threat level in advance; it could only be recorded in the [Monster Encyclopedia] after he killed it. Otherwise, he could have used it as a reference beforehand.

But perhaps the Adventurers' Guild has a similar encyclopedia that records monster information? Linsel had been so busy looking at the [Monster Encyclopedia] on his cheat device for the past three days that he only just realized that such a thing might exist.

Then I went to inquire whether there was such an illustrated guide.

Linsset turned back a few steps, picked up the torch, and continued along the direction of the water flow.

He didn't want to just throw away that spear so easily; he planned to try and find it.

After navigating several bends in the corridor, Lindsay couldn't help but marvel at the sheer scale of the sewer system.

It's really strange that such a small town has such a huge sewer system. If it weren't for [darksight], I would probably get lost by the light of a torch alone.

He gradually saw a point of light approaching him and seemed to faintly hear voices.

Are there other people in the sewers?
