Chapter 202 Crocte Island

The next morning.

A thin layer of morning mist shrouded the sea, and the air was filled with a salty, damp smell and a faint fishy odor.

Suren stood on the dock, looking at a small black dot on the distant sea.

Crockett Island is located in a remote area with very poor transportation. There are only two ferries a day, one in the morning and one in the evening, between the mainland and the island.

He planned to take the early morning ferry to the island to see for himself.

If there really are angels there healing and saving people, then kill the one imprisoned in Silent Hill and catch a new one to replace it.

certainly----

If the angels on the island aren't up to any good, or are monsters posing as swindlers, then just treat it as a relaxing vacation.

"A deep, mournful whistle sounded as the Qingfeng broke through the sea, its massive propeller at the stern whipping up large plumes of white spray."

Flocks of seagulls circled and frolicked at the stern of the ship, occasionally letting out a few cries.

Many passengers standing on the deck enjoying the breeze enthusiastically tore up bread crumbs and tossed them into the sea, attracting seagulls to interact with them.

They fought over the food.

Suren leaned against the railing, his gaze sweeping over the people in the cabin and on the deck.

Most of those who go to this remote island are migrant workers from the island or indigenous people who go to the mainland to buy supplies.

They mostly have rough skin and are simply dressed, making them easy to identify.

At this moment, the group of people gathered in twos and threes, smoking and reminiscing about old friends they hadn't seen for many years and the changes on the island.

"Have you heard? A miracle has happened on our island recently?"

A middle-aged man with a pipe in his mouth said, "They all say it's some kind of gospel from God."

"I've heard about it too."

A woman pulling a suitcase chimed in, "You know the Gibbs couple's daughter, right? She's been confined to a wheelchair for years!"

"Then, a few days ago, after the priest's blessing, they suddenly were able to stand up and walk on their own! Now their whole family has become fervent believers in the church!"

'

Suren listened to the group's casual conversation and looked into the cabin.

Several people were sitting in the cabin. Upon hearing these words, their expressions showed a hint of excitement and hope.

These people huddled together, talking in hushed tones, coughing violently every now and then, looking like they were terminally ill.

What caught Suren's attention the most was a middle-aged woman sitting not far from the group of patients.

She wore a faded shirt, her clothes were very simple, but her overall demeanor was reserved and intellectual, quite different from the rugged indigenous people on the ship.

But she is also a permanent resident of the island, because many of the locals greeted her when she boarded the ship.

"Could it be a public official on the island?"

Suren speculated.

The woman, clutching a handbag, visibly tensed when she heard the people behind her discussing the miracle with hopeful eyes.

She turned her head, glanced at the group of patients with a complicated look in her eyes, her lips slightly moving as if she wanted to say something but hesitated.

But in the end, she didn't say anything and just listened silently.

"Madam, may I ask your name?"

Suren walked over, sat down on the bench opposite the woman, and asked gently.

The woman looked up at the young man in front of her, who had silver hair and was wearing a dark red trench coat.

The other person's attire, which stood out from the crowd, made her very wary.

What do you need?

The woman frowned.

Ignoring the distance in her words, Suren pulled out the firm's business card from her inner lining and handed it over.

"I am a private investigator. My employer has asked me to come to this island to investigate matters concerning the Gospel and miracles."

At this point, Suren's smile faded, her expression turned somber, and she sighed, "My employer is terminally ill, and hospitals worldwide are helpless."

"When people are in despair, they always hold onto a glimmer of hope in these things."

It seemed that Su Lun's performance had an effect, or perhaps the words "terminally ill" touched a nerve in the woman.

Her expression softened slightly, but she didn't take the business card that Suren offered.

"Sarah. Sarah Ganning."

Sarah replied casually.

She looked at Suren and said curtly, "There are no miracles on the island. You'd better go back with this ship immediately."

Suren took back the business card and pressed further, "If there wasn't a miracle, how did the Gibbs family's paralyzed daughter manage to stand up?"

"Ms. Sarah, since you're from the island, you must know something about it, right?"

Sarah turned her head to one side, looking at the calm sea, appearing to refuse to communicate.

Suren's expression remained unchanged.

Why isn't this woman following the script? She only answered one sentence and then stopped talking.

According to the normal plot development, shouldn't she say some vague riddles, throw out a few scary things, and then earnestly persuade herself to leave this place?

Are all the residents of this island so unique?

Just as the atmosphere reached a stalemate, several burly islanders suddenly walked over from the side.

"Dr. Sarah, what's wrong?"

The leader was a Black man wearing a vest.

He glanced at the silent Sarah, then glared fiercely at Suren: "Did this white-haired thug bully you?"

As he spoke, the burly man, relying on his height and strength, stepped forward and tried to grab Suren's collar.

Suren sat in the chair, somewhat helpless.

He raised his hand and grasped the burly man's outstretched wrist.

"Well?!"

The burly man's expression changed, as if his wrist had been bitten by a pair of pliers, and a piercing pain shot through him.

But no matter how red his face turned, he couldn't break free.

"Defamation is a crime, sir."

Suren looked at him and said calmly, "Also, you'd better watch your mouth."

Sarah then realized what was happening, quickly stood up, and pulled the burly man away, shouting, "What are you doing? Stop it!"

Seeing Sarah step forward, Suren readily released his grip.

The burly man lost his balance and staggered back a few steps, rubbing his wrist, which was red from being strangled, with lingering fear.

He glared at Suren resentfully. Although he was indignant, the person in question had already explained, and he couldn't deliberately cause trouble.

Cha could only slink away with a few companions.

More than an hour later, the Qingfeng slowly docked.

Suren followed the crowd off the deck and looked around at Crockett Island.

The area around the pier was desolate, the boardwalk was in disrepair, and some of the planks were even broken, revealing the sea below.

Many of the shops built along the pier to cater to tourists are now almost all closed.

In its early years, this small island was a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful scenery and lack of industrial pollution.

However, a cargo ship later ran aground in the waters near the island, causing a serious leak that directly damaged the nearby marine ecosystem.

The island's residents, who relied on fishing for a living, lost their livelihoods, and young people were forced to leave their homes and seek a better life on the mainland.

The massive loss of people led to the collapse of the tourism industry.

This led to the island gradually becoming closed off and isolated over the past few decades, and being completely abandoned by the times.

As soon as Suren stepped off the pier, he heard several islanders complaining.

"What a damn bad luck, another dozen dead cats floated up to the beach this morning."

A man dressed as a fisherman spat on the ground.

"Another dead cat?" Another old man frowned. "How many batches have died in the past few months? Aren't those beasts supposed to stay on North Island? How come so many have died?"

"Who knows? Maybe it ate some poisonous fish."
