Chapter 180 The Course of Events

"Commander Lake, it's been a long time." A smile appeared on Dunn's face as he quickly stepped forward and shook hands with Lake.

Lake and Dunn shook hands, showing surprise. "Dunn, you really are in the castle, but... if you're here, why didn't you send a message to Plasson? Everyone is worried about you."

Dunn smiled helplessly, "Captain Lake, it's not that I didn't reply to Plassen's message, but there are still many monster remnants near Rockfall Town. It seems that the birds I released to send the letters were killed en route, which is why you didn't receive the message."

"Thank you for your trouble in bringing so many brothers all the way to Rockfall Town. You must be quite tired. I'll have Baron Warren arrange a place for you to rest."

Lake waved his hand. "It's alright, we can talk about these things later. Besides, I also need to pay a personal visit to Baron Warren. He remained calm in the face of the monster attack and promptly reported the situation to Plassen, which is admirable."

"Dunn, I'd like to ask what the general situation is like in Rockfall Town now. It seems the town has returned to basic operations, but the townspeople don't seem to have recovered from the shadow of the monster attack."

Dunn nodded. "Good, Captain Lake. After our advance team arrived in the town, we immediately mobilized the adventurers in the surrounding area to assist Baron Warren's legion in launching a counterattack against the monsters."

"After several days of fierce fighting, we have achieved a partial victory. Only a small number of monster remnants are still being cleared out in Rockfall Town, while most of the monsters have retreated from the town and are lying in wait in the surrounding area."

"That's why I didn't return to Plassen immediately. I needed to stay here and wait for reinforcements to arrive. In the meantime, I led my squad to help repair Rockfall and organize the resettlement of the townspeople."

Lake suddenly realized, "I see."

Some of the soldiers who heard the reason for the incident also showed expressions of understanding. No wonder it was different from what was described in the report. It turned out that something like this had happened.

That makes sense now, and the soldiers can roughly guess what their next task is: to help clear out the remaining monsters around Rockfall Town.

But when it came to monsters, Lake felt a little puzzled. "Captain Dunn, I haven't seen any monsters along the way... Why is that?"

Dunn explained, "These monsters are very cunning and adept at hiding. They won't come out when they see that you outnumber them, so this is a rather tricky situation that we need to handle slowly."

"I see." Lake felt a little relieved after hearing Dunn's answer. Dunn's answer was reasonable and logical.

He also witnessed firsthand that the ecology of the entire Luoyan Town was still very good.

"Then let's go and meet Baron Warren." Lake ultimately chose to go up to the castle with Dunn to meet Baron Warren, who had calmly handled the disaster.

"Rote, you will temporarily take charge of the legion," Lake said before leaving.

Meanwhile, an inconspicuous little dog pretended to be dozing off and overheard the entire conversation.

Brian wagged his tail and came to Loran's side, repeating the entire conversation they had just had.

Loran stroked his chin. There was something reasonable about what Dunn said, but there was also something strange about it.

As a survivor of the disaster in Luoyan Town and also a survivor of the disaster in Daotian Village, he reflected on the scene at that time.

Those monsters basically give villages or towns no chance to breathe; a massive monster tide can instantly overwhelm the defenses.

Loran and his companions barely managed to break through thanks to luck, so the number of monsters around the unseen Rockfall Town must be terrifying.

While it would certainly take several days for Plasson's reinforcements to arrive, Dunn made it all sound rather casual.

Loran pondered the changes in Rockfall Town. If it was an invasion by monsters of that magnitude, why did most of the facilities in Rockfall Town appear desolate instead of turning into ruins?

If the monsters don't reach the point of turning buildings into ruins, then Plassen wouldn't need to issue a red alert and request the Legion's assistance.

Upon closer examination, these facts all contain some contradictions.

Having been exposed to certain emotions, Brian has developed a more acute insight into them. He added, "And I feel that when he said those words... he didn't have any particularly strong emotions, um, that's probably the feeling!"

"Just like... Old Smith!"

Barton, who was listening intently, was somewhat surprised: "Brother Dog, you're quite the reader."

Brian proudly raised his head. "Of course! My sense of smell isn't just limited to my nose!"

Mark Warren then stepped forward and suggested to Vice Commander Roth, "Vice Commander, you must be tired from the long journey. How about I arrange accommodations for you? It will also make it easier for you to participate in the monster extermination work later."

"Of course, all of this comes with a fee. Baron Warren will pay you according to Plasson's fee. Thank you for your reinforcements."

Roth waved his hand, "Although the captain is not here, I still have a say in this matter. We came to aid Rockfall Town not for a reward."

"This is our humanitarian aid on behalf of Plasson, and it is also our duty to protect Rockfall, which is a fiefdom under Plasson's jurisdiction."

"It's not good to keep the brothers waiting here. Okay, then I'll trouble you."

Mark nodded. "Okay, please come with me."

Loran saw Mark; he was fairly familiar with the man, after all, a very grand wedding had been held in Rockfall Town.

Furthermore, this guy had been swindled twice at Thompson's antique shop, so Lorraine naturally had a deep impression of him.

This guy seems to be someone with a certain amount of influence among the Warren nobility.

Mark Warren led the way, taking the legion toward a block, with Loran and Barton close behind.

They soon arrived at a hotel that looked fairly clean and tidy. The hotel was quite large and could easily accommodate more than a hundred people.

However, the rooms were all relatively small, but that didn't bother the soldiers, as long as they had a place to sleep.

Lotte shouted, "Everyone, go and rest. We'll discuss the specifics when Captain Lake comes out."

Loran and Barton chose a room to rest in. As they entered, they were greeted by a dusty smell, indicating that no one had lived there for some time.

"Barton, have you found anything strange again?" Lorraine asked.

Barton thought for a moment and then expressed some of his views, "I remember that many adventurers rushed to Rockfall to provide support..."

"If the advance team has dealt with most of the monsters, then the adventurers can't keep dying one by one on the outskirts, right? Even if there are monsters on the outskirts, there shouldn't be a situation where no adventurer can get in."

"At least, I haven't seen any adventurer teams like ours who came alone yet."
