Chapter 100 Breakthrough
Chapter 100 Breakthrough
These monsters are not the scarecrows used during horseback riding training.
They realized what was happening.
"roar--!"
A dire wolf howled in the distance, and then several monsters rushed forward around Renn, trying to block the warhorse's charge with their bodies.
Startled, the rye reared up.
The momentum of the charge was broken.
Once cavalry loses speed, their power is reduced by half.
Raine lowered his body on the horse's back, gripping the horse's belly tightly with his legs, using his core strength to suppress Rye's rising body.
Swinging a greatsword here is too slow.
The surrounding area was teeming with monsters, and each swing of the 45-pound greatsword required a huge amount of space, but there was no space here.
Rennes had planned this all along.
He didn't sheathe his sword, but instead tucked the two-handed greatsword under his arm, with the hilt against the rear of the saddle and the tip pointing forward, using it as a fixed ramming horn.
Then, he drew the long sword from his waist with his left hand.
He controlled the direction of the greatsword's impact with his right hand, while wielding the longsword with his left.
In order to conserve power to the greatest extent, the longsword in the left hand did not aim to cut the monsters that pounced on him in two, but rather to stab at the exposed vital points as much as possible.
Swish!
A gnoll who had pounced on him collapsed, clutching his bleeding throat.
Boom!
Using the horse's limited movement, the two-handed greatsword on the right side smashed into the spine of another monster.
"Tails! It's your turn!" Renn shouted without turning around, slicing off half a goblin's head with his sword. "Throw those fireballs out!"
The mage, huddled in the middle of the group, was terrified. He saw a huge claw reaching for his horse's leg from the side.
"Get out of here! You bunch of poor bastards!"
Thales screamed, pulled a parchment scroll from his pocket, tore it open without looking at it, and threw it away.
That was a second-circle spell scroll, Arcane Blast.
A blue ripple instantly spread through the air.
Centered on the point where the scroll landed, all the monsters within a ten-meter radius were pushed away by an invisible force, screaming as they flew out in all directions.
The once crowded battlefield was instantly cleared out.
"here you go!"
Ella's voice came from the flank.
The half-elf didn't charge forward like the other soldiers; she was like Renn's shadow.
While Raine smashed through all obstacles in front, she was behind him, constantly stabbing the monsters that tried to get close.
Her movements were all precise and efficient; every strike she made was sure to take a life.
The team sped up again.
In that brief moment when the magic had cleared the area, Renn spurred his horse, and Rye neighed as it charged forward once more.
Another hundred meters closer.
The stench of blood in the surroundings was so strong that it was hard to breathe.
Raine's visor was covered in blood, and he had to wipe it off before he could see the road ahead.
Ahead, the white dire wolf finally made a move.
It didn't run away; it remained sitting there, only tilting its head slightly and letting out another low howl from its throat.
The sound seemed to possess a strange penetrating power, instantly drowning out the noise of the battlefield.
Suddenly, the monsters around them changed.
If they were just a group of frightened wild beasts a moment ago, now they have become soldiers who obey orders.
The hundreds of powerful monsters that were advancing suddenly stopped in unison.
They turned around, abandoned their original goal, and formed a wall in this narrow canyon.
Their target became this small cavalry squad of only twenty men.
"It's giving orders!" Ella shouted. "That dire wolf is directing the monsters to attack us!"
"I know!"
Raine gritted his teeth, the air in his lungs beginning to feel scorching.
The breathing technique was activated rapidly, the body temperature rose sharply, the sweat evaporated as soon as it flowed out, and wisps of white steam kept rising from the body.
The pressure has increased sharply.
An elite soldier was grabbed by the tail by a Yeti that pounced from the side. Startled, the horse reared up, and the soldier instantly lost his balance.
Before he even landed, three gnolls pounced on him.
With the sound of sharp teeth tearing through armor and flesh, the soldier was instantly swallowed up by the horde of beasts.
That was the first one.
Then came the second one.
A goblin spearman hidden among the monsters plunged a bone spike into the neck of another cavalryman.
The man clutched his throat and silently slid off his horse.
The team is shrinking.
Twenty people. Eighteen people. Fifteen people.
Every step forward comes at the cost of lives.
Raine felt a slight tingling and numbness in his left arm. The longsword was covered in blood and various monster tissues.
The black iron greatsword tucked under his right armpit grew heavier and heavier, and he could feel his ribs throbbing with pain every time he pierced a monster.
"Damn it—"
Renn was panting, his vision blurring. This was a sign of exhaustion.
But he couldn't stop; this operation was a huge gamble.
If you stop, you die.
The pack of dire wolves was about 150 meters away.
The distance seemed so close, so close that Renn could even see the dire wolf's fur.
But it's also quite far away.
This 150-meter stretch was filled with all sorts of monsters. Under the command of the dire wolf, they were arranged in layers, blocking the team's advance.
"Raine!"
Behind him, Thales cried out in a tearful voice, "No more scrolls! My mana is about to run out!"
The mage's face was deathly pale, and the crystal at the tip of his staff had dimmed considerably.
"Let's find a way to squeeze out just a little more energy!"
Raine casually pinned a dire wolf that was trying to pounce to the ground.
He drew his two-handed greatsword back from his right hand and gripped the hilt with both hands.
The warhorse was almost too weak to run. Rye was covered in wounds and trembled with every step.
"Ella".
Raine turned around to make sure Ella was still beside him and hadn't been pulled off her horse by the monster during the charge.
"Still here." The half-elf's voice remained calm, but it was already quite exhausted.
"Looks like we'll have to get there."
The horse I'm riding won't last much longer. If I continue riding, we'll fall over and it will be harder to move forward. It's better to start walking now.
Renn glanced around.
Besides him, Ella, and Thales, only seven elite soldiers remained.
Ten people.
Facing hundreds of monsters that were waiting in full force.
150 meters to go.
The dire wolf in the distance slowly stood up, seemingly a little tired of the game.
It shook its snow-white fur and stared coldly at Renn, as if looking at a flock of lambs to the slaughter.
Renn spat out a mouthful of saliva, which landed on the snow and burned a small dent.
He raised his two-handed greatsword, the tip pointing at the white figure.
"dismount."
Ryan rolled to his feet and landed, his boots sinking into the snow.
"Let's charge in."
