Chapter 104 Calm Down
Chapter 104 Calm Down
Hank strode forward, intending to reach out and help, but was forced back a step by the wave of heat that hit him.
"Help him inside," Ella said. "He's in very bad shape. He needs to be brought down immediately, and he needs plenty of meat and water. Quickly!"
"Vina! Reverend Vina!" Hank roared, turning around. "Bring all the ice! And the broth!"
quick!"
A group of people hurriedly carried Renn into the medical room of the stone tower.
"Don't touch me—"
Raine struggled to sit up and pushed away the soldier who was trying to remove his armor.
His hands were still trembling; the result of his overexertion was that his fingers were now stiff as iron.
"It's not over yet—"
He looked at Ella.
"Smoke signals".
Ella, who was removing her blood-stained armor, paused upon hearing this.
"understood."
The half-elf turned and walked out of the stone tower.
A moment later, a straight column of yellow smoke rose into the air.
During the previous meeting between Rein and the knights, the Yellow Wolf Smoke had agreed that the representative would handle the beast tide on their own.
Or, to put it more bluntly: We survived.
The yellow plume of smoke stood out conspicuously in the sky.
It was like a golden sword, piercing through the gloom that had shrouded the Shattered Tooth Canyon all day.
The ceiling was gray, with a few strands of cobwebs hanging on it.
Raine opened his eyes and stared at the spider web for a long time, until he was sure that it was still alive, before slowly exhaling.
still alive.
The intense heat and weakness that felt like it was burning me to ashes have subsided, and I feel much better.
"You're awake? I won't need to use a high-intensity healing spell on you."
A cold voice rang in my ears.
Pastor Vina was sitting on a wooden chair by the bed, holding a piece of linen cloth for wiping wounds.
Her priest's robe was now stained, her face was pale, and she looked quite weak. Clearly, the high intensity of casting divine spells had taken a toll on her.
"Water." Renn was about to speak when he felt his throat was so dry that he could only utter this one word.
Vina didn't say anything, but simply held a ceramic bowl to his lips.
But it wasn't water; it was a bowl of warm liquid that emitted a strong fishy and bitter herbal smell.
"Don't be picky. This will help your injuries heal quickly." Vina watched as Renn frowned and gulped it down, her tone softening slightly. "Your heart almost stopped beating. If you had stayed in that state for a few more minutes, I would be doing embalming now instead of feeding you soup."
Vina stood up and began tidying up the bottles and jars on the table.
"However—" she said softly, her back to Renn, "thank you, Lord Renn, you saved the entire [Shattered Tooth Canyon]."
Raine struggled to prop himself up on the bed, looking out the window at a corner of the room.
It was already close to dusk outside.
The wind and snow seemed to have stopped, and the sky was exceptionally clear; you could even see a few stars.
Under the cover of night, on the distant horizon, several plumes of yellow smoke were slowly rising.
That was a signal that the danger from the surrounding encampments had subsided.
"Looks like everyone's had good luck," Renn said in a low voice.
Sergeant Hank then pushed open the door and walked in.
He glanced at Ryan, then at the empty beds next to him.
This treatment room was originally reserved for the other members of the elite squad.
Now, only Ella remains, along with three other soldiers wrapped in bandages who are fast asleep.
The remaining beds are empty.
Of course, the ever-complaining monk was also nowhere to be seen.
"My lord," Hank placed a piece of parchment on the table, which contained battle casualty statistics, "our losses in this battle were minimal. Apart from the fourteen elite soldiers and the mage Thales, plus nearly two hundred and twenty soldiers who died in action, we suffered no major losses."
The original encampment had nearly 500 people, and almost half of them were killed. However, when facing a beast tide of thousands of monsters, this loss was indeed quite small.
Renn remained silent for a moment.
He remembered Thales's last smile. He didn't know Thales well. These days, Thales had been by Renn's side, and the impression he left on Renn was just that he was a mage with decent magic skills, who was petty but would still follow orders.
But it was this very man who, with his life, brought about Renn's success.
Raine closed his eyes, and the other faces of the elite squad flashed through his mind.
"We'll give them a proper burial in a few days."
"Yes." Hank nodded, without saying anything sentimental.
In the North, death is as common as breathing. Those who survive carry the burden of the dead and continue to wield their swords; this is the only truth.
Just then, a cacophony of horse neighing suddenly came from outside the stone tower.
"What's going on?" Ella suddenly looked up, her hand already on the hilt of her knife.
"I'll go check it out." Hank turned and ran out.
Not long after, shouts of surprise came from outside, followed by Hank walking towards Ryan, yelling, "Sir! You have to see this! This is unbelievable!"
Renn frowned and gestured for Vina to help him up.
With the pastor's help, he moved to the doorway.
In the open space of the camp, two warhorses were surrounded by a group of soldiers.
That was Raine's rye, and Ella's warhorse.
They looked quite disheveled.
Rye's once glossy black fur was now covered with bite marks, a piece of its left ear was missing, and half of its saddle had been torn off.
But they came back.
In the midst of that chaotic beast tide, after their master abandoned his horse and fought on foot, these two beasts actually managed to escape and flee into the deep mountains.
After the battle, they followed the scent and, limping, made their way back to the camp.
"hiss-
—
Upon seeing Ryan emerge, Rye snorted and exhaled a puff of white vapor.
Although it could barely stand, its large eyes remained fixed on Renn, as if waiting for Renn's praise.
"Well done—" Ryan walked over and patted the horse's neck.
The warmth from his palm warmed his body slightly: "Vina, bandage them up too. They're warriors too."
Ella had already rushed over, hugged her warhorse, buried her head in the horse's mane, and her shoulders shrugged slightly.
Late at night.
Raine refused Vina's suggestion that he continue lying down and sat alone on the watchtower at the top of the stone tower.
The biting wind actually helped him stay alert.
He untied the bandage binding his right arm and examined it in the moonlight.
The skin surface appears bluish-purple, which is due to bruising caused by the rupture of a large area of subcutaneous blood vessels.
Even the slightest movement of the muscles will cause a sharp, stabbing pain.
This is the cost of targeted infusion.
With Rein's current body, forcibly controlling life energy to obtain power beyond the limit is fine if used lightly, but if overdone, damaging his arm would be the best outcome.
