Chapter 135 Trident Town
Chapter 135 Trident Town
Ella felt a bit dizzy listening to this. She rubbed her temples and complained, "This is too complicated! I still think dealing with monsters is simpler. At least when they want to kill you, they'll just yell it out instead of smiling at you."
"Is this the royal capital that Valen spoke of?" Renn murmured.
Karen glanced at him: "That's right. In the capital, a poisoned dagger and a forged letter can be far more deadly than a longsword on the battlefield. You must learn to distinguish lies and see through people's hearts."
"Sir," Renn digested the information, then inexplicably thought of the mage named Thales in the North, and raised his question: "You only mentioned knights and nobles. What about mages? I've heard that mages in the North are so powerful, are there no mage nobles?"
This question clearly piqued Ella's interest more than the various geographical and political knowledge she had previously encountered.
"The monks—they are another group of people. A group of people who exist outside of worldly power, yet profoundly influence this world," he said slowly.
"Unlike knights who hone themselves through breathing techniques and unleash the power within their blood, mages manipulate the most fundamental rules of this world through study and research. They call that power the Magic Web. You can imagine it as a network covering..."
The entire world's energy network. Mages connect to this network, then use incantations and spellcasting materials to channel its energy and unleash all sorts of incredible spells.
"That sounds amazing!" Ella's eyes lit up.
"Indeed, they are very powerful." Karen's tone turned serious. "A truly powerful mage's destructive power far exceeds that of a small knight squad. Like the archmages of the Northern Fortress, if they have enough materials and time to cast spells, one person can create a death zone in the midst of a beast tide. However, the path to becoming a mage is a hundred times more difficult than becoming a knight."
"First, there's talent. Out of ten thousand people, perhaps only one possesses the mental talent to sense the magic network. Second, there's knowledge. Spells don't appear out of thin air; they require a vast amount of knowledge to support them."
"A mage apprentice can spend years or even decades just meditating, recognizing runes, and learning various languages. Finally, there's the cost."
Karen glanced at Renn and Ella: "Do you think a knight's equipment and the various materials and potions consumed in normal forging are precious? Compared to what a mage consumes, it's nothing. They need all sorts of rare ores, monster materials, and alchemical potions for their experiments. Every spell they cast requires expensive casting materials. A mage is a walking gold mine."
"Therefore, mages are extremely rare. Most of them are concentrated in the Violet Academy in the Gold Province, or are supported by various lords at great expense, becoming the trump card of their families. They rarely appear in the sight of ordinary people, but no qualified lord would easily provoke a mage."
"This world is far more complex and vast than you imagine," Karen concluded. "Being a knight is just one of the most ordinary paths. But never underestimate anyone you don't know; ignorance is the deadliest poison in the world."
After this long conversation, for the first time, Renn finally gained a relatively clear understanding of the entire world.
Ryan silently memorized this information.
And so, time slipped away quietly as they walked day after day.
A few days later, they arrived at a large town called Trident Town, which was one of the places they had been traveling to.
The town's name comes from its unique geographical location.
Three trade routes converge here, like the tip of a trident, bringing together goods and people from all over the kingdom before distributing them in different directions.
Therefore, this place is both unusually prosperous and unusually chaotic.
The town boasts a diverse range of architectural styles, and the streets are bustling with activity.
"We'll rest here for a day," Sir Karen said, leading them through the crowded streets as she arranged their next steps.
Ryan nodded and gently patted Rye's neck.
Instead of going to the town's inn, Ella unusually dragged them to the Adventurers' Guild.
This is a semi-official organization that exists throughout the kingdom.
It provides quests, intelligence, supplies, and shelter to traveling adventurers, mercenaries, and caravans, while also accepting commissions from lords in various regions to handle some dirty work that the authorities cannot handle.
The guild hall was as noisy as ever.
The walls were covered with various parchment commissions, with rewards ranging from a few silver coins to dozens of gold coins.
An adventurer with a full beard was boasting to his companions, spitting as he recounted how he had escaped from the claws of a ground dragon.
Karen's appearance did not attract much attention.
Having learned from their previous experience at the Adventurers' Guild in Ironwood Town, the three of them dressed up a bit so that no one here would immediately recognize them as knights.
Ella walked straight to the bar and said to the guild deacon, "I need to see your branch leader, Mr. Barnaby."
"The president is very busy," the deacon replied without looking up. "If there's anything you need, you can tell me first. Or, check the task board over there to see if there are any tasks you can take on."
In the Adventurers' Guild, the branch leader holds a very high position, and not just anyone can meet them.
Seeing the person's attitude, Ella took something out of her pocket and placed it on the bar.
That was a badge.
The emblem, made of pure silver and about half the size of a palm, is engraved with a roaring lion. Its craftsmanship is exquisite; it is clearly not an ordinary piece.
When the guild deacon saw the emblem, he was clearly stunned.
The slight impatience on his face vanished without a trace, leaving only caution and awe.
He carefully picked up the emblem, examined it over and over again, and even held it up to the light to carefully inspect the lion.
"Please—please wait a moment!"
His voice changed, and he turned around and scrambled up the stairs behind the bar.
This sudden turn of events surprised Ryan.
He knew that Ella's identity might not be simple. After all, as someone from a knightly family, the breathing technique passed down in his family was only of excellent quality, while Ella's breathing technique had reached perfect quality.
But unexpectedly, a small badge could cause a guild steward to lose his composure to this extent.
Less than a minute later, footsteps came from the stairs.
A slightly overweight middle-aged man walked down quickly, led by the butler.
He is the president of this chapter, Barnaby.
