Chapter 41 The Stitching Corpse Demon
The once still lake surface seemed to have been boiled, with countless huge bubbles rising to the surface.
"Boom!"
With a muffled thud, the lake, which had barely covered Harold's thigh, quickly bulged up.
Immediately afterwards, a colossal creature burst forth from the water.
That was a stitched-together corpse demon.
At a glance, this thing is nearly ten meters tall, and its body is pieced together from the corpse of a huge swamp crocodile and countless human remains.
Dark green blood flowed from the stitches, emitting a foul stench.
"Damn it! What is this thing?!"
Harold stepped back in horror, a wave of fear washing over him as he realized he had crossed the lake on that very thing.
If this thing had caused the disturbance just now, this lake would surely have become its burial ground.
He had no idea that Mars was hiding such a monster at the bottom of the lake.
Despite losing an arm, Mars remains remarkably resilient.
Under the cover of the undead, he scrambled and crawled, taking advantage of the darkness, to climb onto the broad back of the zombie demon.
"Stop them! Stop them!"
The necromancer clutched his severed arm, screaming at the top of his lungs as he waved his staff in his right hand to cast spells.
With his magic, the enormous stitched-together corpse demon began to roar loudly, then strode forward with its two elephant-leg-thick limbs, but instead of attacking the group, it turned and ran wildly into the mist deep within the swamp.
Each step it took left a deep crater in the swamp, splashing mud everywhere, and it moved at an astonishing speed.
"Trying to run away?!"
Karen's eyes flashed with murderous intent, and she drew her sword to give chase.
But just as he was about to move, the remaining two zombies, along with three fully armed zombies that had just crawled out of the water, blocked Karen's path.
These five undead were not regular soldiers.
The tall undead stood firmly on its feet, its long-rotted shoulders bracing against the inside of the shield. Behind it, another undead, wielding two poisoned daggers, lurked in the shadows of the shield, searching for an opening. Further away, yet another undead was slowly drawing its bow.
They formed a battle formation at an extremely fast speed.
This is an elite adventurer squad that never forgot to cooperate, even in the face of death.
Just as Karen raised his greatsword, the tower shield pressed down like a city wall, completely blocking his path of attack.
In a one-on-one situation, the old knight could cleave the shield in an instant, but the daggers on his flanks and the longbow in the distance forced him to focus on defense.
The one-armed necromancer Mars was perched on the back of the stitched-up corpse demon, disappearing into the mist deep within the swamp.
"Sir! Ignore these dead men!"
Raine's voice pierced through the noise of the battlefield and echoed above the lake.
"That necromancer with the missing hand is the key! Leave this to us, I'm confident!"
Karen turned around.
With his strength, breaking through this battle formation would be a piece of cake, but he was worried that if he went to chase Mars directly, the remaining three, including Rein, would be able to deal with these zombies.
But now, Karen saw the boy's calm black eyes amidst the chaos of battle. He had seen such eyes countless times on the battlefield; they were the eyes of a hunter, not a prey.
"Don't die, kid."
The old knight did not hesitate at all.
For a battle-hardened warrior, trust on the battlefield means entrusting one's back to a teammate, even if that teammate is just a novice knight.
boom!
Karen's aura changed instantly.
What was originally just a stream of air emanating from his body now took shape, slowly gathering on the giant sword and his legs.
Karen neither dodged nor avoided, charging straight forward and crashing her entire body into the tower shield.
In the instant the iron shield was struck by the immense force and tilted slightly backward, he used the momentum to leap into the air and directly over the zombie battle formation.
He stepped on the edge of the deep pit left by the stitched-up corpse demon in mid-air, and after a few leaps, he plunged into the depths of the mist.
The battlefield was divided.
Only three people remained, including Raine, facing five undead.
Raine stared at the zombie in front of him and slowly approached. Suddenly, as if sensing something, Raine quickly turned his head.
next second.
"Whoosh—!"
An arrow grazed Renn's scalp and embedded itself in the dead tree trunk behind him, its tail feathers trembling violently.
Those are the undead archers in the distance.
The mage-like undead beside him was holding a staff, and a gray, sluggish aura enveloped the swamp beneath Renn's feet, making it even more difficult for Renn to move.
[Slowing Technique].
Although it was only a low-level spell, it was extremely effective in the already difficult swampy environment.
"Don't let the pace get slowed down! Ella, flank from both sides!"
Renn let out a low growl, squeezing out the hot flow pumping from his heart.
He didn't retreat. Using the explosive power from his breathing technique, he forcefully resisted the spell's delay, sliding to the left in an attempt to bypass the tower shield and head straight for the mages in the back row.
Raine's tactical intention was clear: instead of wasting time dealing with the front row of undead that could only be killed by being chopped into pieces, he should take care of the back row first.
Once the spellcaster and archer are eliminated, this impenetrable fortress will crumble on its own.
However, the other party responded with astonishing speed.
Just as Raine changed direction, the tower shield zombie that had been standing silently did not turn around.
It shifted slightly to the side, and the massive shield precisely blocked Renn's charge.
At the same time, the undead thief hiding in the shadows of the shield's flanks moved.
It moved swiftly along the ground, rapidly approaching Rennes.
As if anticipating Renn's dodge, the poisoned dagger in his hand pierced straight for his lower body.
Raine's pupils contracted slightly.
Heavy shields block the way ahead, while poisonous blades rip out bones from below.
He had no choice but to abandon his attack, and his longsword suddenly rose upright, the blade sinking downwards.
He unleashed the "Iron Wall Stance" in mid-air.
"when--!!"
The dagger struck the spine of the sword, sparks flying.
Although the attack was blocked, Renn's momentum was also abruptly halted.
Before he could regain his balance, he felt a gust of wind coming from his right.
The undead wielding a two-handed greatsword unleashed a sweeping attack the instant his teammates created an opening.
The timing of this strike was quite skillful, precisely at the awkward juncture when Rein's old strength had been exhausted and new strength had not yet emerged.
A living person might hesitate for fear of accidentally injuring a teammate. But a dead person wouldn't.
The nicked greatsword sliced through half of the thief's undead head, preparing to sever him along with Raine.
Raine could only roll backwards in a sorry state, mud getting into Aoi's collar.
The giant sword swept across the spot where he had just stood, slicing a dead tree in half.
On the other side, Ella's situation was equally dire.
The half-elf girl attempted to use her high mobility to launch a surprise attack from above, stepping on the dead tree trunks.
But the skeleton archer was clearly an expert. It didn't aim at Ella at all, but instead locked onto Ella's only foothold—the tree branch hanging in mid-air.
Just as Ella leaped up.
"collapse!"
The arrow broke the branch.
Without any foothold, Ella froze, and was forced to fall from mid-air.
Below her landing point, the undead mage had already raised his staff, and a ball of ice arrows was forming, just waiting for her to crash into it.
"Damn it!"
Ella twisted her waist forcefully in mid-air, throwing her short knife to stop the mage's spellcasting. She then fell awkwardly into the mud, rolling several times before the force dissipated.
After a series of clashes.
The two not only failed to break through the defenses, but were forced back to their starting point.
Renn leaned on his sword, sweat trickling down his face and dripping onto his steaming armor.
The five undead slowly approached.
These guys were definitely seasoned adventurers who had spent years surviving among monsters in their lifetimes. Even after they were turned into zombies, they still possessed such formidable strength and precise teamwork.
"Damn it..."
Ella wiped the mud off her face, leaned against Renn, and looked unusually serious.
"Damn it... these zombies are even more troublesome than the living!"
Although the dagger in her hand was sharp, it was useless against an inanimate object that shielded itself from pain, unless its head was severed.
