Chapter 86 Beast Tide
Chapter 86 Beast Tide (2)
Ella's swaying legs stopped abruptly, and she tensed up instantly like a startled cat.
Those pointed ears trembled slightly in the cold wind.
Ryan keenly noticed her change.
"What's wrong?"
He put down the apple in his hand and instinctively gripped the hilt of his two-handed greatsword with his right hand.
"Shh"
Ella raised a finger to her lips, her red eyes fixed on the rock beneath her feet, or perhaps the permafrost further away.
Her expression turned somewhat unpleasant.
"shock."
"There's a lot of jumbled, intense tremor coming from the north," Ella said softly.
"And," she closed her eyes, took a deep breath as if trying to catch some information in the wind, "there's a smell, like the stench of a wild animal."
Renn's heart sank.
Ella's racial talents as a half-elf, combined with the characteristics of the "Wind Whisperer's Breathing Technique," made her senses extremely sharp. This was why Renn had her monitor the movements in the north from the top of the tower. A few minutes later, Renn also slowly felt extremely faint tremors coming from the soles of his feet.
The sound of horses' hooves broke the tranquility of the encampment.
"Report!!"
That was a scout that Rennes had sent to the north to scout out the situation a day earlier.
A fast horse galloped in from the edge of the canyon, and the soldiers on it almost tumbled off.
His face was covered in snow, and he looked terrified as he ran, pointing to the northern sky.
"They're here! The beast tide is here!!"
Ryan and Ella exchanged a glance.
No further explanation is needed.
"Walk!"
Raine grabbed his greatsword, sheathed it, and turned to charge toward the stone tower. Ella followed closely behind.
When they returned to the command tower, Sergeant Hank had already sent someone to sound the alarm.
The sound of horns echoed through the narrow canyon, causing the snow on both sides of the canyon to fall continuously.
"How is the situation?"
Ryan rushed to the top of the tower and asked Hank, who was gazing into the distance.
"Due north, about six or seven kilometers away!" Hank's voice trembled slightly. "The scale isn't too large, probably—about four or five hundred. But—"
"But what?"
Ryan raised his binoculars.
In the footage, the wind and snow were still very heavy.
But against that gray-white background, a group of black spots are moving rapidly.
It was vastly different from the beast tide that Raine had first seen at the Northern Fortress. If that beast tide was likened to a lake, then this beast tide looked like nothing more than a small river.
They looked like nothing more than a rabble.
Leading the charge was a group of hunched-over glacial ogres. They were nearly two meters tall, with skin that was a deathly grayish-purple.
Following behind them were hordes of Snow Apes. These monsters were known for their ferocity; they ran on all fours across the snow at incredible speeds.
At the very back of the group, several frost elements radiating a chilling aura could be faintly seen drifting about.
"Four hundred —"
Ryan put down his binoculars, his brow furrowing slightly.
This number might seem manageable for a garrison of 500. However, these monsters are all thick-skinned and tough, making it difficult for ordinary arrows to inflict fatal wounds.
And, most importantly—
"There are no dire wolves."
Ella stood beside Raine, her eyes sharper than a telescope. "I didn't see any creature resembling a dire wolf king. Not even a regular dire wolf."
"Something's not right," Renn said in a low voice.
According to intelligence, the Dire Wolf King is the instigator of the beast tide. If the beast tide was caused by it, then even if it didn't appear, there should still be several Dire Wolves present in this current beast tide.
unless----
"This hardly qualifies as a beast tide."
The mage Thales had somehow climbed to the top of the tower as well.
"This group of monsters was probably scared away by the beast tide, and by chance they just happened to gather together and run towards the border." Thales was quite clear-headed at this moment. "There is probably an even bigger beast tide behind us."
"Then let's stop them together."
Raine turned around, his voice as cold as iron.
"Hank!"
"exist!"
"Pass on my orders."
"Everyone, take your battle positions."
"First line of defense, don't skimp on the oil. Set those barricades on fire! I want them to get a good beating before they even get in!"
"Thales".
Raine looked at the mage, "Those frost elementals are yours. Don't let them get close to the barricades, or the fire will be extinguished."
"No problem." Thales grinned, raised his staff, and the ruby at the top began to shimmer.
"Pastor Vina."
"The medical team is ready," the female pastor's voice came from below the tower.
Raine took a deep breath and put on the cold, half-covered helmet.
The visor fell off, covering his overly young face, revealing only a pair of black eyes.
"Ella, come with me."
Raine drew the greatsword from his back, held it in one hand, and pointed the tip of the sword diagonally at the ground.
"Where to?" Ella asked, taken aback.
"The second line of defense."
Renn strode down the tower.
"These monsters aren't worth using those well-prepared magic arrays on. Let's just go and stop the ones that slipped through the net."
"and----"
His voice came through the helmet.
"I'd also like to try out this two-handed greatsword."
"Walk."
Without further ado, Renn turned and left the tower.
The entrance to the canyon, the first line of defense.
This is the barricade area, the first obstacle these monsters will face.
A cold wind howled, carrying with it the stench of decay brought by the horde of monsters.
"Stay calm! Don't shake!"
Sergeant Hank lay prone behind a low wall made of rubble. His old eyes were fixed on the approaching Black Tide.
Three hundred meters.
The figures of those ice field ogres were now clearly visible.
Unlike the obese ogres of the south, they were muscular and bony, wielding the leg bones of some large creature.
"roar!!"
The ogre leader at the forefront roared. It saw the trembling humans behind the defensive line, and instinct told it that it smelled food.
This roar ignited the war instantly. The monster horde, which had been somewhat hesitant, went berserk in an instant. Several agile snow apes sprang from under the ogres on all fours and charged toward the first line of defense.
"put!"
Hank suddenly waved the command flag.
The archers, who were already prepared, did not shoot at the monsters, but instead shot at the ground.
Dozens of fire arrows were driven into the trenches where kerosene had been laid.
A muffled explosion came from the ground, followed by a wave of heat rising into the air.
A wall of orange-red fire rose up from the snow without warning, forcefully halting the advance of the monsters.
The fastest-charging blizzards didn't have time to brake and plunged headlong into the sea of fire.
"squeak-!!!"
A piercing scream broke through the wind and snow.
