Chapter 96 An Encounter
Chapter 96 An Encounter
Beneath the hood, an iron mask was still visible.
"Oh."
Baron grinned and waved the empty flask at Rein.
"Long time no see, Renn."
"I heard you've been making quite a stir lately? Killing dire wolves and what kind of decapitation tactic you're using."
Baron stood up, brushed the snow off his backside, and his cloudy eyes lingered for a moment on Renn's huge black iron sword before revealing a playful smile.
"Not bad. The bones have become much stronger."
""
"but----"
His gaze suddenly passed over Rennes and looked towards the distant northern sky.
"Do you really think that killing those guard dogs means we've won?"
Raine spurred his horse forward, signaling to the soldiers behind him not to make any rash moves. He walked up to Baron and looked down at the man.
"What are you doing here?"
"Wait for you."
Baron tightened his tattered cloak and continued speaking.
"I stopped you just to tell you something."
Renn tightened the reins, and the rye beneath him snorted restlessly. He looked at the man before him; although the man's previous act of deliberately passing on a message had changed Renn's opinion of him, his right hand instinctively rested on the hilt of his sword.
"What is it?"
"That old bastard."
Baron raised his head, his cloudy eyes gazing at the northern void, as if through the heavy snow and wind, he could see a skeleton rising from an ice coffin.
"That stench of decay, which has been there for hundreds of years, is getting stronger and stronger; it's about to move."
Renn's pupils contracted sharply.
"He's making a move? You mean he's going to take action himself?"
"It's not just about taking action." Baron sneered. "Those previous beast tides were merely a test. But soon, I'm afraid he'll really make his move."
"That old monster has lost his patience."
Baron turned his head and stared intently at Raine. "Although the magic array beneath the Northern Fortress is quite damaged, he can't sleep as long as it's still lit. This time, he's really going to overturn the table."
Upon hearing this, the first thought that flashed through Raine's mind was: he must report this to the Northern Fortress immediately.
This level of intelligence was beyond the scope of what a trainee knight could handle.
Sir Karen and the leader must be informed in advance.
"Ella!"
Raine whirled around, his voice urgent: "Give me a fast horse! I need to get back to the Northern Fortress immediately! You're coming with me—"
Save your breath.
Baron interrupted Ryan's order.
Ryan was taken aback and turned to look at him.
"No need to trouble you, sir knight."
He glanced at Ryan.
"You think I came to see you first?"
"What do you mean?"
"I went over there first," Baron said, pointing in the direction of the Northern Fortress. "I told the soldiers stationed around the Northern Fortress."
Renn remained silent.
He looked at the man in front of him who looked utterly destitute.
This knight-errant, who operated outside the law, was wanted and considered a criminal, but he sounded the alarm earlier than anyone else.
"Now that the message has been delivered—"
Renn took a deep breath, the urgency easing slightly, but his doubts remained: "Then why did you come to me? Just to tell me this?"
I guess so.
After saying that, Baron didn't linger. He pulled his hood down again, covering the iron mask.
He turned around and walked into the vast expanse of blizzard.
"Where are you going?" Ryan couldn't help but shout.
"Let's go wolf hunting."
The faint sound of Barron drifted on the wind.
The sound grew fainter and fainter until the gray figure completely melted into the white background, making it impossible to distinguish between the person and the snow.
Renn stood there for a long time.
It wasn't until Ella rode up to him and gently touched his arm that he finally stopped.
"He's gone," Ella said softly. "This guy was really strange. He was a wanted fugitive, yet..."
""
Raine didn't answer; he didn't know the answer either. He simply looked away and tightened the reins.
"Let's go back to Shattered Tooth Canyon."
Renn glanced at the sky.
The already gloomy clouds pressed down even lower, as if they could be reached out and touched.
A storm is coming.
By the time we returned to Shattered Tooth Canyon, it was completely dark.
Sergeant Hank and his men opened the camp gate.
Seeing Ryan return with more than a hundred soldiers, the sergeant finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"Lord Renn! You're back!"
"How is the situation?" Renn dismounted and tossed the reins to his attendant.
"Everything is normal," Hank reported.
Renn nodded, but did not let his guard down.
Baron's words echoed in his mind.
If he intends to invade the magic circle beneath the Northern Fortress, then that will undoubtedly be the moment when the beast tide truly arrives.
Snowflakes landed on my eyelashes, then melted into water and flowed into my eyes.
Ryan blinked, pushing Barron's warnings out of his mind.
Overthinking is useless.
At this critical moment, the most crucial thing is how to deal with the beast tide.
"Hank," Ryan called out.
"grown ups?"
"Call a few sharp-eyed people to re-inspect the traps along the three lines of defense in the canyon. Pay special attention to the mooring ropes for the logs and oil barrels."
Hank grinned. "Sir, I checked yesterday. Everything is fine."
"Then check it again, and check it every day."
"Okay, okay, I'll go right away." Hank acted quickly.
After arranging the inspection of the defenses, Raine turned and walked into the stone tower. He had another matter to arrange: to form an elite decapitation squad.
Ryan was the first to find Thales.
The monk was looking at a red crystal in his hand, muttering to himself as if he were plotting something.
"Tails," Ryan greeted.
Thales was so startled that his hand trembled, and he almost dropped the crystal in his hand into the snowdrift.
He hurriedly caught it, stuffed it into his sleeve, and turned to look at Renn: "Lord Renn! Don't you make any noise when you walk?"
This is a fire element crystal; its structure becomes unstable in extremely cold environments. If it cracks, five gold coins will simply vanish into thin air.
"If it cracks, it's on me."
"Words are no proof —"
"If we can hold out this time, you can pick the loot first," Renn said, throwing out the bait.
Thales' eyes lit up instantly, but he still coughed casually, "Ahem, it's not about the money, it's about the glory of the North—but since you're so sincere, I'll reluctantly agree. So, what do you want me to do?"
"We need to form a squad." Ryan crouched down and leaned close to Thales. "Me, Ella, you, and a dozen or so of the most elite soldiers."
Upon hearing this, Thales's face turned slightly green: "This location—is outside the third line of defense? That is, outside the encampment? Are you crazy? That place will be teeming with monsters!"
