The moment the swarm of insects crashed into them, Rick knew that these things were much larger than the one in the Old Parliament Square.

Without the slightest hesitation, the swarm of insects surged forward like a tide, the gray insect swarm frantically climbing along the carapace of the first chimera, layer upon layer, rising upwards.

But the surface of this thing was covered with special plant roots, and when the insects bit into it, they only left rows of light white marks.

Can't chew it? You can't even chew it?

Rick was startled.

One's own swarm of insects should theoretically have an easy time dealing with such a large ghoul.

The inscriptions on the city wall suddenly flashed, and the moment the oppressive force descended, the giant ghouls that had just crawled out of the collapsed pit all paused, and several were directly forced to their knees.

But the light only lasted a few breaths. The intensity of the inscription flickered, then faded away in large swaths.

Rex felt the pressure on the swarm of insects suddenly ease, and the swarm immediately came back to life, surging and moving more than twice as fast.

Those who had been held down by the oppressive force stood up again, their movements more agile than before, their roars sharper, and they began to spread outwards.

Needless to say, those polluted by the forest were already largely unaffected by the pressure from the Bronze City, and now that the restrictions were lifted, they were rushing forward even faster.

The inscriptions on the inner city walls are gradually losing energy. This was inevitable, especially after the bronze pillar in the underground abyss was destroyed.

Rick didn't have time to think about these things.

The pair of bright red eyes at the top of the insect swarm narrowed slightly, and the next moment, the swarming insects suddenly transformed.

A stream of gray insects gathered and intertwined from the bottom, twisting into a long snake as thick as an adult's waist. The snake's head suddenly pierced into the waist and abdomen of the first giant chimera, instantly penetrating its sturdy green root system.

The chimera let out a muffled wail, and its body bulged up from the inside.

One, two, suddenly a gash burst open in the abdomen of that enormous body, and a large number of gray, swarming insects surged out from it.

Its body is made up of flesh-colored chambers, the walls of which are covered with writhing ghouls. Some of them are not yet fully formed, with only half a body and a mouth, and no limbs at all. They are slowly taking shape while soaking in sticky fleshy liquid.

The swarming insects poured into these chambers. Unlike the solid exterior, the interior of this enormous chimera was a paradise for the swarming insects, and a frenzied feeding frenzy began.

The swarming worms devoured them from the inside, and the ghouls that hadn't even had a chance to hatch didn't even have a chance to struggle before being swept away by the countless worms and disappearing into the sea of insects. The places in the internal cavities where the embryos had originally hung gradually became nothing but pits and sticky bits of flesh.

The swarming worm had no intention of giving up. It rampaged through the chimera, moving from one chamber to the next, hollowing out each one it passed through.

The chimera's body surface bulged and cracked continuously, and gray worms gushed out from each crack, spewing onto the ghouls in the collapsed ground.

A putrid stench permeated the air above the inner city, mixed with sounds of tearing and gnawing.

The first chimera's body quickly went limp, its limbs and chambers hollowed out. Unable to hold on any longer, its torso broke in two, and a large number of unformed ghoul fragments and gray worms poured out of the broken ends.

But this is only the first one.

The second enormous chimera had emerged from the collapse, much larger than the first, with thicker and denser woody fibers on its carapace, and emanating a pungent, fishy stench.

Then came the third and the fourth.

Rex controlled the swarming insects to surge out from the first one's remains, reforming into a new insect snake that lunged at the second one.

But the second one was smarter than the first. As soon as its shell cracked open, countless ghouls poured out, landing and lunging at the oncoming insects and snakes, using their bodies to forcefully block the opening.

As the swarming insects devoured the giant ghoul, they were also being devoured in return.

Another stream of insects, split off by Rek, surged toward the overflowing giant ghouls.

But this was already his limit; the diversion had caused the insect swarm to become visibly thin.

Moreover, with each bite of this flesh and blood contaminated by the forest species, a batch of swarming insects would die. The gray insects and the torn flesh and blood stuck together, and more swarming insects surged forward, stepping on their dead brethren to continue moving forward.

Rex was using sheer numbers to overwhelm these giant ghouls.

Sporadic gunshots suddenly rang out from the direction of the outer city. The gunshots were sparse, only a few shots every now and then, mixed with the howls of the ghouls in the inner city.

These were clearly residents who hadn't had time to evacuate. The Night's Watch had distributed silver-plated pistols and bullets to every household so that they would have some means of self-defense on the day the Great Ghoul invaded.

Rick could tell what those gunshots meant.

Sending ordinary people with silver-plated pistols to fight giant ghouls is risky; even if they hit one, they might not kill it. Even if one dies, dozens more are waiting. The collapse was breached, or rather, it couldn't be held.

Once the gunfire stops, there will be no more survivors in that invaded area.

A sense of helplessness filled Rex, and the pair of crimson eyes on the insect hive brightened slightly. He knew he was powerless to save them; the Night's Watch had already done their best. If he failed, this breach in the inner city would fall completely.

The four gigantic chimeras, along with the ever-emerging ghouls, could reach the inner city walls in just a few dozen breaths.

The inner city wall is the last line of defense for Bronze City.

Rick's teeth were grinding together. Or rather, he had no teeth left; the swarm of worms that made up his body twisted together, making a leathery rustling sound.

Taking advantage of his momentary distraction, the second chimera suddenly sprang to its feet, taking another step towards the inner city wall with its ghoul-covered body. The third chimera also began to move.

They had no intention of staying at the collapse site to fight with Rek. Flesh and blood churned and rolled, and one after another, the large ghouls rolled out of their shells. After struggling briefly on the ground, they roared and surged in all directions.

The number of ghouls in the chamber dwindled one by one.

More and more ghouls are emerging from the collapsed ground.

Rick was starting to feel the strain.

Just then, a figure swept towards Rek from the direction of the outer city.

It was incredibly fast, skimming almost the ground. It had the Night's Watch's signature hood pulled low, and its figure wasn't very tall, even somewhat thin, making its face impossible to see.

The moment he landed, his arms were already raised. His skin instantly split open, and muscles peeled away from his arm bones, the flesh stretching and twisting in the air, instantly solidifying into dozens of serrated blades, densely hanging around him.

The next moment, all the blades shot out at once.

They didn't rush towards the ghouls. A dozen serrated blades pierced the carapace of the second giant chimera, and the moment they entered, they seemed to come alive, the flesh and blood frantically burrowing into its body.

The second chimera's shell then began to fall off.

The carapace was peeled away layer by layer, rolling up the underlying fascia as if peeling a fruit. The flesh beneath the carapace rolled out, and each strip of flesh suddenly sprouted a dense array of sharp, pointed teeth that snapped inwards frantically.

Those teeth bit into the chimera's own flesh and blood.

The chimera let out a mournful howl, its muscles contracting wildly as more and more flesh was peeled away, and its teeth grew increasingly dense. Its body was being torn apart piece by piece by its own flesh, from the outside in.

That's his ability.

Rex controlled the swarming insects, his crimson eyes flashing slightly. His helpers had arrived.

He wasn't idle either. He immediately changed the direction of the insect swarm, releasing the second chimera while pouncing on the third one that had just taken two or three steps.

The two fourth-tier beings did not exchange any further words. The swarm of insects kept it in check, while the other fourth-tier being plunged its own flesh into the chimera, mutating its flesh, growing teeth to bite back, and finally stripping it clean.

The second chimera finally gave way and collapsed with a thud.

When its corpse split in two, its internal organs and unformed ghouls poured out all at once, and the flesh and blood mutated by the Hooded Watchmen were churned up inside its own body.

The third chimera didn't last long either. Just a dozen breaths after the hooded watchman's blade pierced through, the entire corpse began to collapse from the inside out; the skeleton couldn't support the swollen flesh and crumbled to the ground.

Rex's swarm of insects surged forward, devouring every piece of flesh it could swallow, while avoiding those contaminated by the forest species.

However, at least half of the ghouls are currently contaminated with forest species, and large numbers of swarming insects are dying. The total number of insects is shrinking at a visible rate, and the insect swarm supporting Rex has also shortened a bit.

The hooded watchman was unharmed.

He dealt with the fourth chimera single-handedly. He peeled away the chimera's carapace layer by layer, revealing the core of flesh and blood inside, and then pierced it through with all the flesh and blood blades.

The moment the core exploded, grayish-green bits of flesh flew everywhere, soaking the Night's Watchman's robes from head to toe. He didn't even wipe them off; he simply raised his hand to straighten his hood.

The four giant chimeras were thus completely eliminated.

The area around the collapsed pit was finally cleared, littered with bits of flesh and still-wriggling limbs, the air thick with the stench of burning and decay. Rex's swarm of insects encircled the pit, completely blocking the ghouls that were still emerging.

The collapse has been barely contained.

The two of them hadn't even had a chance to breathe a sigh of relief.

An extremely strong polluting odor emanated from the deepest part of the collapse. But in the next instant, it had already closed in on the swarm of Rek insects.
