Chapter 512, The Knights' Guild
The first few days after leaving Bronze City were unusually peaceful.
The carriage traveled north along the official road for four or five days. They traveled during the day and camped wherever they could find the time.
The Blue Knight tidied up the camp very neatly, while Lu Yuan was responsible for lighting two sandworm oil lamps.
This thing is really useful. As soon as the light comes on, anything unclean within a radius of ten meters will avoid it. After four or five days, there was nothing strange at all, not even a wild animal was encountered.
The only time was on the third night.
When Lu Yuan got up to add oil to the sandworm oil lamp, he caught a glimpse of something standing deep in the woods out of the corner of his eye.
But the gray text offered no clues. Clearly, that thing posed minimal threat.
It looked rather dark, a bit darker than the surrounding tree shadows. Lu Yuan held up his lantern and shone it in that direction.
The bright white light swept across the area, but it was empty; there was nothing there.
Lu Yuan had no intention of going over to check. Since there were no prompts in the gray text, it didn't matter.
Back in the car, he went back to sleep.
The further north we went, the higher the terrain became. The forest outside the window grew denser day by day, and the broad-leaved trees gradually gave way to conifers. The wind seeped in through the cracks in the car, carrying a strange chill.
The flow of people on the official road was increasing day by day. Families, wheelbarrows, and bedding were all walking south.
"Are all these people from the north heading south?" Lu Yuan asked the Blue Knight.
"They came from the north." The Blue Knight glanced at them. "There are always a lot of them before winter, but this year there are definitely more than usual."
Lu Yuan nodded but did not reply.
Winter is one reason, but the barren land is probably another. The pressure on the defenses there is increasing, and those who could be evacuated have already been evacuated.
The Blue Knight mentioned the academy's affairs intermittently during their journey over the past two days.
"The Knight Academy wasn't originally called an academy," the Blue Knight said, looking at the road ahead and driving the carriage. "Initially, it was a group of people who swore an oath to protect something. Later, as more people joined, it became an academy."
"Swear an oath?" Lu Yuan asked, somewhat puzzled. "Shouldn't that be quite common for knights?"
"Everyone who enters the academy must make their own vow. Different vows lead to different paths," the Blue Knight added. "The academy's training is about forging your vow into your path."
Lu Yuan wanted to ask more questions, but the horses pulling the carriage were startled by the approaching caravan, and the blue knight raised his hand to control the reins, ending the conversation there.
Oden, on the other hand, muttered to himself with a hint of helplessness upon hearing this.
"The Knight Academy..." he drawled, "Is it some kind of new organization?"
"Don't you know about the Knight Academy?" Lu Yuan asked.
"Ah, I truly didn't know of the Knight Academy's existence," Oden said. "But I know of the Four Knights. However, the Four Knights seemed to have disappeared not long after my death. Could this Knight Academy be its successor? Ask again tomorrow."
Lu Yuan didn't end the conversation, but instead asked, "What are the Four Horsemen?"
"The Four Horsemen were founded to deal with four different forbidden beings," Oden said. "According to the records, they should be called the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Of course, they were anything but apocalyptic. As for their fate, they failed, and died a horrible death, which is why they disappeared later."
"When I was still alive, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse had already kicked the bucket. His death was horribly gruesome. If the Forbidden were so easy to deal with, this world would have been explored long ago."
Lu Yuan communicated with him in his mind: "Oh, I see. So, this world hasn't been fully explored yet?"
"Yes, that's right. I don't know if you've finished exploring yet, but when I died, you hadn't," Oden continued. "Because there are some places that humans simply can't go to. Going there means certain death, or turning into some kind of monster, or becoming some kind of mutated source's snack."
Lu Yuan nodded, understanding dawning on his mind.
This world seems to be much bigger than Earth.
It was at this time that Lu Yuan discovered something.
She could share her thoughts and ideas with Oden if she wanted to. But because she didn't want to, Oden received very little information.
It's somewhat similar to opening a channel in one's own mind for Oden. How much of that information gets transmitted is entirely up to Oden himself.
He also wondered what would happen if he told Oden about Grim Harbor.
But I'm afraid it might ruin Oden's career.
So let's hold off for now and talk about it later.
We didn't continue talking about the Knight Academy until the next day.
"Is the academy's entry requirements very high?" Lu Yuan asked casually.
"It depends on what you say," the Blue Knight said, continuing to drive the carriage. "If we're just looking at your extraordinary rank, it's not actually that high; rank two is fine. Of course, rank two is enough for knowledge extraordinary beings; for bizarre extraordinary beings and other extraordinary beings, the requirements are stricter. But the difficult part is getting in."
"Is there anything I need to do upon entering?"
"They don't care about your rank," the Blue Knight continued. "They care about whether you have thoughts or ideas in your heart, or rather, whether you have something that resonates with others."
Lu Yuan pondered the sentence for a moment, but couldn't figure it out.
What is this? Is it an obsession? Or a goal? Or something else entirely?
At this point, Oden began to understand a little.
"Oh, so that's how it is." He scoffed in Lu Yuan's mind. "Isn't it just challenging your own willpower? You make it sound so mysterious. Hey kid, your willpower is very stable, what are you afraid of? Don't be afraid, I'll take care of you."
"Oh, I see," Lu Yuan replied. "Is it related to the Four Horsemen?"
Oden shook his head.
"I don't really care. At worst, I can just go back underground, stay in that statue, and wait for the next member of the Taboo Studies to arrive. If you can't beat them, you really will die."
Lu Yuan smiled, then suddenly thought of a question.
"By the way, when you were advancing from the third to the fourth tier, which forbidden items did you get involved with?"
Oden shook his head.
"I can't say his name, as you already know. But I can tell you roughly: the person on the wall you mentioned before is somewhat connected to him."
