Chapter 572 Map of the North
Beside the door, behind a wooden cabinet, stood an elderly man with white hair.
He carried a faint aura of extraordinary power.
He watched Lu Yuan arrive and listened to Lu Yuan explain his purpose, then took Lu Yuan to complete the registration process.
After handing over a Knight's Token, Lu Yuan's thirty-three tokens instantly became thirty-two, but his name had already been added to the roster, earning him a reading quota for a period of time.
Each time you enter the museum, you will need to swipe your badge again, and the time will be deducted accordingly.
Upon entering, you'll find a public reading hall on the first floor. The hall has a double-height ceiling, and a wall made of stained glass forms a high wall across the snowfield. Four armored figures stand atop the wall, while a ripe wheat field lies at your feet.
The light from the kerosene lamps leaked through the glass and fell on the rows of long tables, with brass candlesticks standing at the corners.
The branch's collection is very large; according to preliminary observations, it contains approximately 20,000 to 30,000 volumes.
There are more than a dozen rows of bookshelves on each side of the hall, with books categorized into history, geography, herbal medicine, and basic education, which can be freely accessed and read.
The room was quiet, with thirty or forty students scattered around, all turning pages very quietly.
Lu Yuan didn't rush to read. He first walked into the library from the main hall, intending to get to know it better first.
Further inside the hall, there is a separate reading room with a plaque on the door: Geography and Atlases, Chronicles of the North, Extraordinary Fundamentals, Chivalrous Oath and History.
He walked all the way to the deepest part.
There was a windowless stone chamber with inscriptions on the door.
Lu Yuan stopped in front of the door.
Even through that door, he could vaguely sense a slightly unclean atmosphere emanating from inside.
"The books inside all deal with the supernatural, pathways, and pollution." The old man, who had somehow followed them, spoke in a calm voice.
"If you want to see it, you have to be led in by someone, within a limited time, and you are not allowed to take it out."
"What about the price?" Lu Yuan asked.
"Very high," the old man said.
"Those books were all contaminated, unlike ordinary collections."
Lu Yuan glanced at the door again. Nothing was revealed through the crack, but he could sense a strange aura emanating from it.
This time, I'll let it go, because Lu Yuan's knight's token has other uses.
The staircase leading to the upper floors of the tower was also blocked by an inscription.
The old man said that the second floor and above contained even deeper layers of books, which the new students currently could not access.
Lu Yuan did not linger; he simply nodded before turning back.
Lu Yuan's main purpose in coming here was to first check the map of the northern border.
Even now, Lu Yuan still doesn't quite understand the exact locations of Raven City and Watchtower City.
It's located next to the bookshelf marked with the geography atlas symbol.
Lu Yuan quickly found an atlas, flipped through it to find maps and atlases of the Northern Territory, and sat down to begin comparing them.
This map marks the locations of some of the larger towns in the North, as well as the names of some mountain ranges.
The northern border is separated by a mountain range named Boundary Mountain.
Several small towns are marked on the boundary mountain.
Lu Yuan saw the town of Heijing that he had passed through on his way here.
Near Heijing Town, there are six or seven other towns that appear to be of similar size.
One of the towns, called Blackwater Town, is noticeably larger.
Clearly, it is the largest of all the towns.
The map is covered with roads, and the main roads gradually converge in Snow Owl City.
This also explains why Snowow City is the largest central city in the Northern Territory, because the main roads leading into the Northern Territory from the outside are all in Snowow City.
Of course, this does not mean that all roads are in Snow Owl City, because there are several less obvious roads on the map that can bypass Snow Owl City, but the journey is obviously much longer and involves passing through a mountain range that surrounds the northern border north of Boundary Mountain.
After passing Snow Owl City, the number of cities on the map suddenly increased.
In the northeast direction of the map, there is a city marked with city walls; that is the Dead City.
Located slightly north of the city between the Dead City and the Snowowl City is the Watchtower City.
To the west of Watchtower City, several tribes are scattered together, known on the map as the Northern Tribal Alliance, and their overall size seems to be about the same as Snowowl City.
A few small towns were scattered across the map afterward. In the northeastern corner of the North, a lone location was marked amidst a blank space: the Knight Academy.
The Knight Academy is located on the northeastern border of the North, or rather, it is very close to the border.
As for Cold Raven City, it is located to the southeast of Snow Owl City, not far from Boundary Mountain and Black Well Town.
The map was not displayed after that.
In other words, the entire vast Northern Territory only has four cities, dozens of towns, a tribal alliance, and the Knight Academy within the Empire, so the population is clearly not large.
However, this makes sense, because the North does indeed have scarce food production, extremely harsh geography, extreme weather, and unknown things lurking in the mountains.
According to the map above, Watchtower should be the most populous city in the entire North, followed by Dead City, then Snowowl City, and Raven City is about the same size as Snowowl City.
Judging from its size, the Tribal Alliance doesn't seem to be much smaller than Watchtower.
We can ask them what this racial alliance is all about later.
Lu Yuan now understood his approximate location and the general distribution of power in the north.
Overall, there are only two passes in the North: one guarded by the Dead City and the other by the Knight Academy.
However, the Knight Academy is surrounded by mountains on three sides, and the only pass is backed by the hinterland.
The only relatively low mountain range surrounded by mountains on three sides is quite impressive if someone can climb over it. It would be perfect to send the Grand Knight Commander to give them a good beating.
Lu Yuan thought to himself, briefly matching the maps in his mind.
After looking at the map, Lu Yuan put the map book back in its place, returned to the hall, sat down at the long table, and picked up a book of miscellaneous notes about the Northern Frontier to read.
Lu Yuan mainly wanted to learn about the local customs and habits, and also to see if he could find any strange records.
Just as Lu Yuan had turned a few pages, a familiar figure sat down opposite him, holding a book. Lu Yuan looked up and saw it was Eli.
"You actually came too?" Eli put the book he was holding on the table.
