Chapter 7 The Vice Commander's Chess Piece: Your Life is the Chess Piece

Zhao Tianxiong's confidant was Chen Mo, a ninth-dan martial arts apprentice and a veteran in the profession.

He spent half a day thoroughly investigating the situation in the wilderness the night before.

The two pursuers died at the foot of the western cliff, killed by a single blow to the throat and a final blow to the wrist; the killer was clearly an expert.

Within a three-kilometer radius, the ground was littered with the corpses of strange beasts: Steel-maned Rhinoceros, Armor-splitting Bear, and Shadow Leopard—some of the most troublesome F-rank beasts, all of which were killed with a single strike.

The tracker stopped at the last signal point, then pulled a straight line towards the north gate, leading to the nearest dormitory – Barracks No. 12.

Wang Tie, Li Ming, and a new recruit named Lin Feng lived there.

Chen Mo placed the report on Zhao Tianxiong's desk, stepped back to the door, and remained silent.

Zhao Tianxiong looked at the paper twice, then slapped it back on the table.

"Lin Feng? Seventh-dan martial arts apprentice?"

Chen Mo did not respond.

Zhao Tianxiong picked it up again, stared at it for a while, and then slowly leaned back in his chair.

Is it really such a coincidence?

Two consecutive events point to the same person?

What a coincidence!

But Lin Feng's strength as a seventh-level martial arts apprentice doesn't seem like that of a murderer.

He had seen many geniuses, but could a seventh-dan master really kill through three kilometers of wilderness in one night and kill two pursuers?

He didn't believe it, but that's what was written on the paper.

"Where are the things?"

"Not found."

Zhao Tianxiong rubbed his temples and didn't say anything.

The source of those ten Body Tempering Pills was shady; they couldn't be obtained through public channels and had to be investigated privately, but even that failed.

He pulled open the drawer, folded up the report and locked it, then leaned back in his chair.

"Did he report for the F-rank rift mission two days from now?"

All three are on the list.

"it is good."

Chen Mo could tell from that "good" that he was in a good mood.

"What's inside the crack," Zhao Tianxiong paused, "who can say for sure?"

Chen Mo: "I'll arrange for two people to go in with you."

"Be quick about it."

......

North Gate, mission assembly.

The seven people stood in a row, with Lin Feng in the middle, Wang Tie on his left, and Li Ming on his right. Their equipment had already been checked, and none of the three spoke.

Lin Feng glanced at the other four people.

There were two unfamiliar faces.

Not the kind of unfamiliar face that has just been assigned there, but the kind of face that I have never seen before in the camp. He was wearing standard combat uniforms, his posture was casual, but his eyes were not casual. He was looking straight ahead, not looking at people's faces.

Lin Feng lowered his head, tightened the scabbard's latch, and withdrew his hand.

The footsteps came from the right.

As soon as Zhao Tianxiong walked in, the two unfamiliar faces straightened up at the same time, their movements so synchronized that it was as if a switch had been triggered.

"We've all arrived, good."

Zhao Tianxiong scanned the group, paused on Lin Feng for two seconds, and then moved away.

"There's been some trouble in the wilderness lately, does anyone know?"

Wang Tie shook his head: "I didn't notice."

Li Ming shook his head in agreement.

Zhao Tianxiong turned his gaze back to Lin Feng: "And you?"

"I slept so soundly that day, I don't remember anything."

Lin Feng looked up, replied calmly, his expression unchanged.

The two looked at each other for about three seconds.

Zhao Tianxiong turned his head away first, smiled, and said, "It was just a casual question, nothing."

He turned around and began to explain the task process, his voice steady and his wording concise.

Lin Feng lowered his head and touched the scabbard again, without making a sound.

The crack was ten kilometers north of the city, and the team walked for nearly an hour.

Before we even arrived, the smell of fish and sulfur wafted over, growing stronger the further we went, until it was almost stuck in our throats.

Li Ming covered his nose with his sleeve, slowed his pace by a beat, and was pulled by Wang Tie to catch up.

The crack was larger than Lin Feng had anticipated.

A black gap stretched across the ground, nearly twenty meters wide at its widest point. Inside, it was pitch black, with only a few dark red spots undulating in the distance, whether they were lava or the eyes of some strange beast, it was hard to tell.

A low-frequency vibration came from deep within, not like a cry, but more like the ground trembling.

Two new recruits had already stood behind the entrance, their heels slightly off-center.

Of the two who followed in, the one named Liu Gang glanced back and said, "F-rank, a bunch of new recruits, what are you chickening out for?"

As soon as he finished speaking, he took a half step back, moving a little further away from the edge.

Lin Feng ignored all of that; he was looking at the direction of the rock strata on the opposite cliff face.

This crack was formed by the major earthquake three months ago; it's a new crack, and the contents inside have never been systematically cleared.

The density will not be low.

Wang Tie leaned closer and lowered his voice: "Something doesn't feel right inside."

"There's never anything good in F-grade stuff." Li Ming tugged at his gloves, trying to maintain a calm expression, but his hand movements betrayed him—he had wrapped the glove strap around three times.

Zhao Tianxiong walked to the front of the line and waved his hand.

"Enter."

Lin Feng moved with the group, glancing at the two unfamiliar faces out of the corner of his eye. One was walking in front of him on his left, and the other was behind him on his right.

The direction was quite accurate.

He pushed the hilt of his sword up slightly, loosening the blade half an inch in its sheath, and stepped into the crevice.
