"...I was so scared that I burst into tears. Luckily, there were a few huge rocks that created a small space...so we weren't crushed to death immediately. But Grandma...she was already injured, and not long after...she passed away."

"In the darkness, my mother held my grandmother and cried for a long time... and then hastily buried her under a stone."

"We were trapped deep underground... Except for the occasional dripping of cold water from the cracks in the rocks... all around us were cold, hard stones. It was dark and cold... I was terrified and kept crying. My mother held me and comforted me over and over again. She said, 'Don't be afraid, Xiaoyao... Daddy will definitely come to save us... He will.'"

Biyao's face turned deathly pale, and her breathing became rapid, as if she had been pulled back into that dark, suffocating, and desperate cage: "But... the darkness seems to have no end... Father still hasn't come... I was hungry and scared, and I cried until I had no strength left... Mother just held me tightly... Her body was warm at first... but then it got colder and colder... She kept saying, 'Little Yao, don't be afraid... Mother won't let anything happen to you.'"

At this point, her body began to tremble violently, and her voice became broken and indistinct, each word seeming to be squeezed out from between her teeth, filled with immense pain:

"But... Father never came... I was so hungry I was about to faint... I could only slump in Mother's arms and whimper... One day, I was so hungry my vision was blurry... Mother... seemed to be groping in the dark for a long time... and then... she found a piece of... meat..."

Upon uttering the word "meat," Biyao felt as if she had been struck by the most terrifying thunderbolt. She trembled violently, her face instantly losing all color, turning as pale as paper, and even her lips turned bluish-gray!

Her eyes were wide open, her pupils shrinking to pinpoints, filled with immense fear, regret, and a despair that could destroy the soul!

"I...I was starving...I grabbed whatever it was and swallowed it...It felt...so good...and then I fell asleep...At that time...I think I heard my mother laughing in the dark...laughing very softly...very softly..."

Her tears fell silently and violently, a mixture of immense fear and deep-seated remorse, instantly soaking her cheeks and clothes.

"Later... every now and then... my mother would find me a piece of 'flesh'... and that's how I... survived... but my mother's voice... grew weaker and weaker... until one day... I called her... and she never answered me again..."

Biyao slowly and stiffly turned her head to look at Jiang Xiaochuan.

Those once bright and lively eyes were now terrifyingly empty, like two dry wells drained of all life and hope, filled only with boundless darkness, helplessness, fear, and a deep-seated despair that came from being utterly abandoned by the world and having even one's closest relatives "devour" them in the most tragic way.

That gaze, like a red-hot, then quenched in ice water and poisoned, pierced Jiang Xiaochuan's heart fiercely and without reservation, spinning and churning, causing him to convulse in pain, almost unable to breathe. Beneath the cold, lifeless excruciating pain in his left chest, it seemed as if a tangible, tearing agony was emanating from it!

She looked at him and, word by word, in a hollow voice that seemed to belong to another world, asked:

"Do you know... what it feels like to wait to die?"

"Do you know... what it smells like when the body of a loved one slowly decomposes day by day?"

"Do you know what it feels like to never see your surroundings clearly, to live forever in darkness and fear?"

Jiang Xiaochuan opened his mouth, wanting to speak, to offer comfort, to break the terrible memory.

But it felt as if an icy hand was gripping his throat, preventing him from making a sound. He could only watch helplessly as Biyao was completely swallowed up by that dark past.

A long, long silence followed, so long that even the faint light on the rock face seemed to dim. Biyao appeared to have just barely escaped the terrible nightmare, but her mind remained hazy, her eyes unfocused. As if in a dream, she continued in that flat voice:

"...Until one day...a light suddenly shone down from above...I was so scared that I hid in a corner...I saw the opening getting bigger and bigger...I heard my father calling our names...He jumped down...and stood in front of me."

"He didn't look at me first... but looked at my mother... The light was too bright just now... I didn't see how my mother was... By the time I wanted to look... my father had already blocked my view... But I clearly saw... my father's body trembled... and then he froze there... like a stone... The Azure Dragon Uncle, White Tiger Uncle, and Black Tortoise Uncle who jumped down later... they were all stunned in place... without moving."

"I suddenly felt so scared...scared more than when I was waiting to die...I whispered, 'Dad...'"

"Father slowly turned around... Three uncles lined up... blocking Mother's body... I still couldn't see Mother... I could only whisper, 'Father... Where is Mother?'"

With each word Biyao spoke, her body trembled more violently, and her face grew paler, as if the helpless little girl about to face the cruelest truth was reappearing before her eyes.

"...Father didn't say a word...His face...was so terrifying...so terrifying...Even though I'm young...I could feel it...he...he actually wanted to kill me! Kill his own daughter!"

"But he didn't do anything... He just picked me up... and carried me away from that dark hole... As he left... I secretly peeked down from his shoulder... and saw that my three uncles had already buried my mother... only... only one hand was sticking out... but that hand... that hand..."

The words abruptly stopped!

Jiang Xiaochuan was horrified to see that Biyao's face turned ashen in an instant, her eyes rolled back and her pupils dilated, and she seemed to have all her bones, soul and life force drained away in an instant, and she fainted straight and without warning.

"Biyao!"

Biyao's eyes were tightly closed, her face was ashen, her breath was so weak it was almost imperceptible, her body was cold, and she was still twitching slightly uncontrollably.

Clearly, the immense stimulation and pain brought on by the memories had exceeded the limits of her mental capacity, directly leading to her fainting.

Jiang Xiaochuan held her cold body, his heart feeling as if it were being squeezed tightly by an invisible hand, cold and painful, and filled with immense panic.

He hurriedly and frantically checked her breathing and pulse, and tried to transfer some spiritual energy to her, but found that his spiritual energy had not recovered much, and transferring it would be like throwing a stone into the sea.

"Biyao? Biyao!" he called her softly, his voice trembling almost imperceptibly.

Biyao, who was in a coma, seemed to have heard it, or perhaps it was just instinct.

Her brows were furrowed, as if she were unconsciously gripped by immense pain and fear.

She suddenly reached out and grabbed Jiang Xiaochuan's arm haphazardly but with unusual force, her nails digging deep into his flesh, like a drowning person grabbing the last piece of driftwood.

"...Don't go..." she murmured softly, her voice trembling with sobs, tears streaming from her eyes. "...Don't leave me...Mother...Father...Don't leave me..."

Jiang Xiaochuan stood frozen in place; the pain in his arm was nothing compared to the sharp, aching feeling in his heart.

He looked at Biyao's face, still fragile and helpless, with tears streaming down her face even in her unconscious state, and at how she clung to him tightly, refusing to let go. His throat felt like it was blocked, and he couldn't make a sound.

He slowly lay down beside her, letting her grab his arm, gently pulling her cold, trembling body into his embrace, and awkwardly patting her back with his other hand.

It was like... a long time ago, someone had comforted him in this way, or, in his imagination, this was how a frightened child should be comforted.

"I won't leave..." he whispered, his voice hoarse, "...I won't leave. Go to sleep."
