When Jiang Xiaochuan arrived at the platform of Xiaozhu Peak with Su Ru, he remembered a critical problem.
He didn't know where Lu Xueqi lived.
Xiaozhu Peak is entirely populated by female disciples, whose residences are scattered throughout the bamboo forest and along the stream. In the past, when he came, Lu Xueqi would either be waiting for him at the platform, or he would bump into her by chance. He had never been to her residence.
Su Ru, on the other hand, knew the way well. As soon as she landed, she waved to him and said, "I'm going to find your Uncle Shuiyue. You can go find Junior Nephew Lu. Don't wander off."
After saying that, he left, leaving him alone, bewildered in the wind.
He scratched his head, wondering what to do.
I can't exactly knock on every door and ask, can I? I'd probably get kicked out by some lecherous scoundrel on the spot.
Just as I was at a loss, a person walked out from the bamboo shadows beside me.
She wore a moon-white Taoist robe, her figure slender, her eyes gentle yet holding a hint of appraising amusement. It was Wen Min.
Wenmin was somewhat surprised when she saw that it was him. Her gaze lingered on his head for a moment, and her smile deepened.
"Junior Brother Jiang? Your hair... is quite unique."
Jiang Xiaochuan instinctively reached out to touch her head again, but stopped halfway through. He said, "Oh, it's Senior Sister Wenmin. Um... Senior Sister Wenmin, I'm looking for Senior Sister Lu Xueqi. Where does she live?"
Wenmin did not answer immediately.
She looked him up and down, a smile playing on her lips, and said, "Come with me." She turned and led the way.
We walked along a path paved with pebbles into the depths of the bamboo forest.
Jiang Xiaochuan quickly followed. The bamboo shadows swayed along the path, and the moonlight filtered down, dazzling like shattered silver. There was a fresh fragrance of bamboo leaves in the air, along with a faint scent of unknown flowers.
"Senior sister," Jiang Xiaochuan said, making conversation, but it was genuine. "It's been a long time, senior sister has become even more beautiful."
Wen Min, who was walking ahead, paused for a moment, but without turning around, she laughed and said, "You smooth talker."
"That's true. My senior brother always says that Senior Sister Wenmin of Xiaozhu Peak is beautiful, kind-hearted, and highly skilled."
Wen Min smiled gently and said, "Did you say that, or did Senior Brother Song say it?"
Jiang Xiaochuan forced himself to blurt out, "Of course it was Senior Brother who said it."
Wenmin smiled gently and didn't respond.
The two walked for a while longer, the sound of bamboo leaves rustling softly. They could vaguely see several bamboo huts scattered among the bamboo shadows ahead.
"We're here." Wenmin stopped and pointed to a simple house not far away.
"That's Junior Sister Lu's room." She turned her head to the side, the moonlight shining on half of her cheek, making her look gentle and refined, but the smile in her eyes made Jiang Xiaochuan a little uneasy.
"Junior Brother Jiang is quite attentive to Junior Sister Lu."
Jiang Xiaochuan's scalp tightened, and he quickly waved his hand, saying, "Senior Sister, what are you saying? Junior Sister Lu helped us yesterday, and it's only right that we thank each other as fellow disciples."
He even felt that what he said sounded a bit fake.
Wen Min said "Oh," but the last syllable was drawn out, which made Jiang Xiaochuan's heart pound.
"The bond between fellow disciples..." she repeated, nodding, "Yes, the bond between fellow disciples."
Wenmin waved her hand, turned around and walked back, her voice drifting over: "Go quickly."
Jiang Xiaochuan breathed a sigh of relief as he watched Wen Min's figure disappear at the other end of the bamboo path.
This senior sister...
He turned to the bamboo hut. It wasn't big, and it stood there quietly, with a dim, warm light shining through the window paper. Compared to the cold moonlight outside, it gave off a... indescribable feeling.
As I lifted my foot to walk forward, I suddenly felt a throbbing in my chest.
It doesn't hurt; it's just a sudden tightening followed by a sudden loosening.
thump.
The sound was deep and solid.
Jiang Xiaochuan stood there, stunned, his hand on his left chest.
thump.
Another sound.
Heartbeat?
He instinctively held his breath and listened carefully.
Boom, boom, boom.
One blow after another, unhurried yet powerful, carrying a strange, vibrant energy, struck his chest.
That lifeless bead seems... to have come alive?
No, it's not that it came back to life, it's that... it was triggered by something.
He looked up at the bamboo hut where light was shining.
Lu Xueqi is inside.
Is it because... I'm closer to her?
The moment the thought crossed my mind, my heart seemed to race even faster.
He licked his slightly dry lips, took a deep breath, and lifted his leg forward.
The closer I got to the bamboo hut, the clearer and stronger my heartbeat became.
Thump, thump.
When he was just a few steps from the door, the commotion was already as loud as a drumbeat, making him feel flustered and short of breath, and his face even felt a little hot.
He stopped, raised his hand, and wanted to knock on the door.
But the door opened from the inside.
With a creak.
Lu Xueqi stood inside the door, dressed in a light blue casual outfit, her hair loosely tied up with a simple hairpin, with a few stray strands falling around her cheeks.
She had clearly just taken a shower; her hair was still damp, and her face had a faint blush.
Those clear, beautiful eyes looked over, landed on his face, and then settled on his head.
She frowned slightly.
"...Come in." She stepped aside.
Jiang Xiaochuan didn't move; his heart was beating too fast, and he needed to catch his breath.
Lu Xueqi waited for a while, but he didn't move. She raised an eyebrow and said, "What, do I have to treat you?"
Jiang Xiaochuan shook his head and said, "No, nothing. It's just... um, there's something I wanted to talk to you about, Senior Sister."
"Let's talk inside." Lu Xueqi's tone was flat, but it didn't sound like she meant to discuss it.
Jiang Xiaochuan hesitated. Going to a girl's room in the middle of the night seemed inappropriate.
"What are you afraid of? I'm not going to eat you." Lu Xueqi looked at him and her lips seemed to twitch slightly, or perhaps not.
Having said all that, any further hesitation would be pretentious.
He took a breath and stepped over the threshold.
The room was clean, or rather, empty.
There was a bed, a table, a chair, and a sword hanging on the wall; nothing else.
There was a faint, refreshing scent in the air; it smelled wonderful.
Lu Xueqi closed the door, walked to the bedside and sat down, pointing to the only chair in the room and saying, "Sit."
But Jiang Xiaochuan didn't sit down. He took things out of his pocket and placed them on the table one by one.
A small pot of plum blossoms, a box of osmanthus sugar, a box of rouge, and a... crooked sword tassel.
"Um... thank you for yesterday..." he stammered.
"I didn't know what you liked, so I just bought a few things... I figured you don't need anything..."
Lu Xueqi's gaze swept over the items on the table, lingered on the sword tassel for a moment, then moved away to look at him.
"Are you feeling better?" she asked.
Jiang Xiaochuan subconsciously replied, "Huh? Oh, okay, it's alright now."
Lu Xueqi didn't say anything, but suddenly reached out and grabbed his wrist.
Her hands were warmer than his; her fingertips were a little cool, but her palms were warm. The warmth traveled up her skin, and Jiang Xiaochuan shuddered, his heart skipping a beat.
Lu Xueqi held his hand, paused for a moment, and then frowned again: "Why is it still so cold?"
"Maybe it's because I'm cold-sensitive." Jiang Xiaochuan tried to pull his hand away, but couldn't.
Lu Xueqi ignored him, took his hand and pulled it closer to her, then lowered her head and gently breathed on the back of his hand.
The warm breath brushed against his skin, and Jiang Xiaochuan froze.
Then she let go, took his hands in her own, and gently rubbed them together.
Her hands were soft, but her strength was considerable, rubbing his hands until the backs of his hands turned red. However, the chill seemed to seep from his bones, and he could never warm them up.
Jiang Xiaochuan's face flushed slightly. He forcefully pulled his hand back and hid it behind his back: "I'm really, really fine. I'll be fine in a couple of days."
Lu Xueqi glanced at him, then withdrew her hand and looked at his chest, asking, "Why wasn't there a heartbeat then?"
