Chapter 253 Moon Gazing Terrace
Sunlight streamed through the windowpane, casting slanted square shadows on the floor.
Hongli leaned against the door frame, carrying a bundle in her hand. The cloth was some kind of smooth silk, a dark black.
She watched as Lu Xueqi sat on the edge of the bed, bending down to comb Jiang Xiaochuan's hair, from root to tip, her movements delicate.
"Little Bingbing," Hong Li called out.
Lu Xueqi didn't look up and continued combing her hair. Jiang Xiaochuan glanced up, feeling a little embarrassed. He tried to move, but Lu Xueqi pressed his shoulder down.
"Don't move," she said.
Hongli chuckled, walked in, and placed the bundle on the table.
The bundle was opened at one corner, revealing a thin, black section inside, shimmering with a faint light.
"Here you go," Hongli said.
Lu Xueqi then raised her eyes, her gaze falling on the black, pausing for a moment, before looking at Hong Li.
"What?"
"Clothes." Hongli sat down at the table, poured herself a cup of tea, and took a sip.
"I got it from another world. Women there wear these, and they say..." She paused, a hint of mockery in her eyes, "...and men like to see them."
Jiang Xiaochuan's ears turned slightly red. He wanted to turn his head to look, but Lu Xueqi gently pressed his head with her fingers.
"What style?" Lu Xueqi asked, her tone flat.
"You'll see when you wear it."
Hongli put down her teacup, got up and walked out. When she reached the door, she turned back and winked at Jiang Xiaochuan, "Little master, you'll like it."
She left, and the bamboo hut fell silent, save for the soft, rustling sound of a wooden comb brushing through her hair.
Lu Xueqi finished combing the last strand of hair, gathered her fingers together, and pulled out a blue hair ribbon from somewhere. She loosened it and tied it loosely. Then she got up, walked to the table, and picked up the black dress.
Shake it open.
It was a skirt, a very strange skirt. It was short and tight, made of a thin, translucent material, woven from black silk. When wrapped around my hands, I could see the flesh color of the skin underneath. It also had two long stockings, also black, as smooth as silk.
Lu Xueqi lifted her skirt and looked at it for a long time, her brows slightly furrowed.
"How... how am I supposed to wear this?" she whispered, as if asking herself.
Jiang Xiaochuan stood up, walked to her side, looked at the dress, and felt a little dry in his throat.
He recognized it; it was something from another world—black stockings, a bodycon skirt. He never expected to see it here.
"Sister Hongli, she..." he began, his voice a little hoarse. He cleared his throat, "She just loves to cause trouble, don't pay any attention to her."
Lu Xueqi turned to look at him, her gaze lingering on his face for a moment before returning to her dress.
"Do you like it?" she asked.
Jiang Xiaochuan didn't say anything.
Seeing that his ears had turned red, Lu Xueqi understood about 70-80% of what was going on. She folded the skirt neatly, wrapped it back in the bundle, and placed it at the bottom of the wardrobe.
"Leave it for now," she said.
Many days have passed.
The bundle remained at the bottom of the cupboard. Lu Xueqi didn't touch it, and Jiang Xiaochuan didn't mention it either. Life went on as usual: cultivation, childcare, cooking, and eating.
Xiao Bai still comes often, holding Yun Zhou or Yue Yao, sitting on the stone bench in the courtyard, shaking a rattle. Hong Li occasionally pops out to tease Xiao Bai, then retreats back into Jiang Xiaochuan's sea of consciousness to talk to Linglong. Linglong is mostly silent, just quietly "watching" as Jiang Xiaochuan makes the children laugh, as Lu Xueqi serves him food, and as the sun rises from east to west.
One night, the moonlight was so bright that it spilled silver all over the ground.
Yunzhou and Yueyao had gone to bed early in the next room, with Xiaobai keeping them company. Lu Xueqi cleaned up the dishes, dried her hands, and went to the window to look at the sky.
"The moon is beautiful tonight," she said.
Jiang Xiaochuan was sitting under the lamp flipping through an old book when he heard this and looked up: "Hmm?"
"Let's go to the Moon Gazing Terrace." Lu Xueqi walked over, took the book from his hand, closed it, and placed it on the table.
"Wear something warm, it's chilly at night."
Jiang Xiaochuan was stunned. Wangyue Terrace... that was a famous scenic spot on Xiaozhu Peak, said to be most beautiful under the moonlight. He had never been there at night.
"Just the two of us?"
"Hmm." Lu Xueqi took a thin, light blue cloak from the cabinet, draped it over him, and tied the straps. Her fingers brushed against the side of his neck, feeling its warmth.
The two left the bamboo hut and walked along the path behind the mountain. The moonlight was bright, and the path was clearly visible. The shadows of bamboo leaves were imprinted on the stone path, fragmented and swaying. The color of the weeping bamboo was not very clear in the night, but the rustling sound of the wind could be heard, like someone whispering.
The path grew steeper, with stone steps spiraling upwards. Lu Xueqi walked ahead, her steps steady, but she would occasionally turn back to take his hand. Jiang Xiaochuan offered his hand, and she gripped it tightly, her fingers interlocking with his.
After walking for the time it takes for an incense stick to burn, the view suddenly opened up before me.
It is a cliff, hanging alone in mid-air, with three sides open and only connected to the mountain behind. The cliff face is flat and smooth, and it shines with a bluish-white light under the moonlight. This is the Moon-Viewing Terrace.
Jiang Xiaochuan stopped and took a breath.
It's really spacious.
Looking ahead, there are layers upon layers of mountain shadows, outlining deep and shallow ink marks under the moonlight. In the distance, there are thin clouds, translucent in the moonlight, flowing slowly. Looking down, there is a bottomless abyss, dark and gloomy, with mist floating at the bottom, like the sea.
Above, a full moon, large and bright, seemed so close it could almost be reached out and touched. The moonlight shone down, clear and unobstructed, splashing across the entire cliff. The rocks were bright, the people were bright, and even the texture of their clothes was clearly visible. The light was not dazzling, but soft and clear, like water, soothing to the bone.
Jiang Xiaochuan stared in disbelief, and after a long while, he finally uttered softly, "So beautiful..."
Lu Xueqi wasn't looking at the moon, she was looking at him.
The moonlight fell on his profile, his eyelashes, and the tip of his nose, gilding them with a silvery edge.
His eyes were wide open, bright and sparkling, reflecting the moon and the distant mountain shadows.
The wind ruffled the hair at his temples, and his blue cloak fluttered gently behind him.
As she watched, the corners of her mouth slowly curved into a smile.
No matter how beautiful the Moon-Viewing Terrace is, it's just rocks and the moon. But when he stands here, the rocks and the moon finally gain meaning.
Jiang Xiaochuan stared at her for a while before remembering her and turning his head away.
He turned his head and froze.
Lu Xueqi stood three steps behind him, dressed in white, the moonlight enveloping her from head to toe, as if she had stepped out of the moon.
Her hair was not tied up; it was loosely tied with a plain silver hairpin, with a few strands falling over her shoulders, fluttering slightly in the wind. Her eyebrows were painted with ink, her eyes were like those of a cold pool, and her lips were like those of vermilion. But at this moment, the ink, the pool, and the vermilion all melted into the moonlight, becoming soft, gentle, cool, yet warm.
She was looking at him too, her eyes shining brighter than the moonlight.
Jiang Xiaochuan's heart skipped a beat, and his mind went blank for a moment.
He wondered if the moon was so bright because of her.
Seeing him stunned, Lu Xueqi's face gradually flushed, spreading from her cheeks to her ears. In the moonlight, it looked like rouge on white jade. She took two steps forward, stood in front of him, and looked down at him.
"Is it pretty?" she asked softly, her voice carried on the wind.
Jiang Xiaochuan snapped out of his daze, his face flushed, and he looked away, his throat bobbing as he said, "Beautiful."
After he finished speaking, a strange feeling welled up inside him.
