As the child grows up, he learns to crawl, sit, and babble "Dad" and "Mom".
Xiao Bai brought a lot of things with her, and Yun Zhou and Yue Yao were even closer to her than to Jiang Xiao Chuan, reaching out to hug her and snuggling into her arms.
One day, Lu Xueqi watched as Xiaobai sat on the porch, holding one child in each arm, basking in the sun. The two children nestled in her arms, giggling. She watched for a long time, then suddenly spoke:
"noob."
Little White looked up.
"Let Yunzhou and Yueyao recognize you as their godmother," Lu Xueqi said calmly.
Xiao Bai froze, tightened her grip on the child, and Yue Yao shifted uncomfortably. Xiao Bai quickly loosened her grip, looked down at the child, and said nothing.
Jiang Xiaochuan was hanging clothes to dry in the yard when he heard this. He turned his head, looked at Lu Xueqi, and then at Xiaobai.
"I have no objection," he said.
He didn't have much status in the family anyway; Lu Xueqi made most of the decisions. Besides, he did feel indebted to Xiaobai. She took good care of the child, even more so than he did, and the child was close to her. It would be good for her to have a godmother.
Xiao Bai remained silent, her head bowed, her fingers unconsciously stroking Yue Yao's soft hair. After a while, she finally raised her head, her eyes slightly red, but a faint yet genuine smile on her face.
"Okay," she said.
And so it was decided.
There was no ceremony, no banquet. Lu Xueqi simply poured three cups of tea: one for Xiaobai, one for herself, and one for Jiang Xiaochuan. The three of them clinked their cups together and drank. Xiaobai put down her cup, hugged Yunzhou and Yueyao even tighter, buried her face in their soft necks, and nuzzled against them.
"Call her godmother," Lu Xueqi told the child.
Yunzhou and Yueyao were still young, only able to utter indistinct syllables, babbling incoherently, making it impossible to understand what they were saying. Xiaobai, however, smiled, a fleeting tear glistening in the corner of her eye.
From then on, Xiaobai took even better care of the child. Sometimes when Jiang Xiaochuan wanted to hold him, she would be reluctant and say, "Let me hold him a little longer."
Jiang Xiaochuan let her be and sat to the side, watching the three of them. The guilt he felt in his heart lessened a little.
He would grant Xiaobai's requests as long as they weren't excessive, but Xiaobai rarely made any requests. Most of the time, she would just quietly stay by his side, watch over him, and occasionally tease him. When she saw him blush, she would laugh.
One day, Jiang Xiaochuan pulled a long wooden box from the bottom of a cabinet. He opened it and found a sword inside. It was dark green with a faint shimmering light on the blade. It was Mo Xue. He took the sword and went into the courtyard.
Lu Xueqi was practicing her swordplay. Tianya sword in her hand transformed into a streak of azure light, sometimes fast, sometimes slow, sometimes like a swimming dragon, sometimes like a startled swan. When she saw him coming, she stopped, the sword light faded, and she returned to her sheath.
"What's wrong?" she asked, a fine sheen of sweat on her forehead.
Jiang Xiaochuan handed Mo Xue over.
Lu Xueqi looked at the sword but didn't take it.
"I have Tianya," she said.
"I know," Jiang Xiaochuan said, handing the sword forward again. "Here, take this."
Lu Xueqi still didn't answer, her gaze shifting from the sword to his face.
Why?
Jiang Xiaochuan pursed his lips, his gaze fixed on the Ink Snow Sword. After looking at it for a while, he said, "I have the God-Slaying Spear."
Hong Li snorted in his mind: "You've got a conscience, kid."
Jiang Xiaochuan ignored her, looked up at Lu Xueqi, and spoke softly but clearly:
"Like me... having you is enough."
Lu Xueqi paused, looking at him. Sunlight fell on his face, and his eyes were bright and clear, reflecting her image.
She suddenly smiled, took the sword, and ran her fingers over the blade; it was icy cold.
"Okay," she said, putting the inkstone on her waist as well, one on each side of Tianya.
After that, she practiced swordsmanship, sometimes using Tianya and sometimes Moxue. The two swords, one blue and one green, seemed like one in her hands. Jiang Xiaochuan sat on the veranda watching and found it pleasing to the eye.
Su Ru often visits Xiaozhufeng.
Sometimes she would bring freshly made pastries, and sometimes she would bring clothes and shoes for the children. She would sit in the courtyard, holding Yunzhou or Yueyao, making them laugh, and the wrinkles around her eyes would smooth out.
Shuiyue was mostly in seclusion. Occasionally, she would come out and see Su Ru. The two would sit together and talk in low voices, which Jiang Xiaochuan could not hear clearly, only occasionally hearing a few words.
"Xueqi is cold to outsiders, but she's really good to Xiaochuan," Shuiyue said, holding a cup of tea and looking at the bamboo forest in the distance, where Lu Xueqi was holding Jiang Xiaochuan's hand and walking slowly.
"It's really good." Su Ru nodded, gently patting Yue Yao in her arms. "It's just... sigh, I feel sorry for Xiao Chuan."
"What's there to feel aggrieved about?" Shuiyue glanced at her. "I think he's enjoying it."
Su Ru smiled and shook her head: "That's true. This child looks gentle, but he has his own ideas. His willingness is more important than anything else."
Shuiyue took a sip of tea, then her gaze drifted to the couple in the distance. After watching them for a long time, she whispered, "Xueqi is blessed."
Su Ru also looked over and sighed softly, "Xiao Chuan is also blessed to have Xue Qi like this; it is his good fortune."
Shuiyue fell silent and simply sipped her tea slowly.
She actually felt a little sorry for Jiang Xiaochuan, being held so tightly by her own apprentice, following him everywhere, and even if he talked to Xiaobai for a few more minutes, that girl would keep an eye on him.
But looking at the smile in his eyes, it didn't seem forced. Perhaps, it was a case of one willing to give and the other willing to receive.
She stopped thinking about it and only occasionally offered a few pointers on cultivation, but most of the time she didn't bother them.
Lu Xueqi's cultivation level had long surpassed hers, so she, as the master, needed her disciple to give her pointers. Fortunately, Lu Xueqi respected her and performed all the proper etiquette, so Shuiyue was able to go into seclusion in peace, occasionally coming out to visit her grand-disciple, and her days were quite peaceful.
Tian Buyi was still angry.
Jiang Xiaochuan is angry that he never returns to his parents' home after getting married, and that he has only returned to Dazhu Peak once in more than three years.
Su Ru tried to persuade him several times, but to no avail, so she just let him be.
She would often go to Xiaozhufeng to see her son, daughter-in-law, and two younger children. When she returned and told Tian Buyi, Tian Buyi would listen with a stern face, snort, and turn away.
Su Ru knew he was thinking about it. Sometimes she would bring back some pastries made by Jiang Xiaochuan from Xiaozhufeng. Tian Buyi would say, "Who likes to eat this sweet stuff?" but he would reach out and take them, eating them carefully, bite by bite.
Sometimes when she says that Yunzhou can call him "Grandpa", Tian Buyi's eyes light up for a moment, then dim again, and he mutters, "It's not like he's calling me."
Su Ru laughed and poked his forehead: "You're just being stubborn. If you miss your son, go see him. It's not far."
Tian Buyi remained silent, pacing around the room with his hands behind his back. After a long while, he finally managed to utter, "I'm not going! A married son is like water spilled from a bowl!"
Su Ru shook her head and stopped trying to persuade her.
However, Song Daren, Lü Daxin, and Du Bishu, a few fellow disciples, would occasionally come to Xiaozhu Peak.
They claimed to be delivering something on their master's orders, but in reality, they came to see Jiang Xiaochuan. Several grown men surrounded Yunzhou and Yueyao, at a loss for what to do, wanting to hug them but not daring to, only chuckling foolishly.
He Dazhi also brought his homemade rattles and wooden horses. The craftsmanship was rough, but he put his heart into it. Jiang Xiaochuan invited them to stay for dinner. Lu Xueqi cooked a few dishes, and the brothers sat around the table, chatting and laughing, making it quite lively.
They simply didn't mention Tian Buyi, Jiang Xiaochuan didn't ask, and they didn't say anything either.
Just before leaving, Song Daren patted Jiang Xiaochuan on the shoulder and sighed, "Junior brother, when you have time... go back and visit Master. He may not say it, but he cares about you."
Jiang Xiaochuan nodded, feeling a pang of sadness in his heart.
It's not that he doesn't want to reply, it's that he doesn't know how.
Back then, Tian Buyi was so angry at the wedding that he almost overturned the table. He had to kneel down and beg, and Su Ru had to cry and persuade him before he reluctantly nodded.
But since then, a rift has grown between master and disciple. He was afraid to go back, afraid to see Tian Buyi's disappointed eyes, and afraid to hear the words, "You still know how to come back."
He kept putting it off until his child was old enough to walk, and he only returned to Dazhu Peak once.
