Chapter 278 Sword Challenges Peach
The Thunder Sword was still stuck there, its blade flashing with a faint light.
Biyao released her grip, leaving the sword in place, and clapped her hands as if she had simply stuck a twig in the ground.
She turned around, no longer looking at the unconscious Li Xun, and her gaze returned to Zhang Xiaofan and Zeng Shushu, whose eyes were still glazed over.
The rain seemed to have lessened, turning into a misty drizzle.
Biyao raised her hand and tidied a strand of hair that had been ruffled by the wind at her temple. Her movements were elegant, as if she hadn't been the one who had just stabbed someone in the butt with her sword. She looked at Zhang Xiaofan and spoke, her voice sounding a little faint in the rain and mist.
"He," she paused, as if choosing her words carefully, her gaze sweeping across Zhang Xiaofan and Zeng Shushu's faces, "Jiang Xiaochuan, your... senior brother who married Lu Xueqi, where is he?"
Zhang Xiaofan's heart skipped a beat. He pursed his lips and remained silent.
Zeng Shushu's eyes were dazed, and she seemed to react to the name "Jiang Xiaochuan." Her lips moved, but no sound came out.
Biyao waited a few moments but received no reply. Her eyes turned cold, and she took a step forward.
Zhang Xiaofan immediately moved to the side, blocking Zeng Shushu's path. Although he himself was also injured and had consumed most of his spiritual energy, his eyes were resolute.
Biyao looked at him and suddenly smiled.
"She does value relationships," she said, then turned her gaze to Zeng Shushu, whose eyes were unfocused behind Zhang Xiaofan, and a faint pink light flickered in her eyes once more.
Zeng Shushu shuddered, his infatuation deepened, and his eyes completely lost focus.
Biyao looked at him, her voice soft and gentle, with a strange rhythm: "Tell me, where did Jiang Xiaochuan go?"
Zeng Shushu's lips moved, her eyes vacant, as she murmured, "They...they got separated...the miasma...it all dispersed..."
Biyao's eyes narrowed. They got separated? With whom? Lu Xueqi?
She suppressed the emotions surging within her and continued asking, her voice even softer, "Who did you get separated from? Which direction did you go?"
Zeng Shushu's face showed a struggle, as if he was subconsciously resisting, but how could he resist the alluring power of the Hehuan Bell? He quickly became confused and stammered, "Senior Sister Lu... protected him... I don't know..."
The pink light in Biyao's eyes faded, and Zeng Shushu's body went limp and he fell to the ground. Zhang Xiaofan hurriedly supported him, checked his breathing, and found that he had just fallen into a deep sleep, so he breathed a sigh of relief.
Biyao stood there, the rain and mist blurring her features. She remained silent, looking at the unconscious Zeng Shushu, then at Zhang Xiaofan, who was supporting Zeng Shushu with a wary and angry expression, and finally, her gaze swept over Li Xun, who was unconscious beside her with a sword stuck in his buttocks.
After a long while, she finally spoke, her voice returning to its previous coldness, devoid of emotion.
"For his sake," she said, her gaze sweeping over Zhang Xiaofan and Zeng Shushu, then glancing at the pitiful Li Xun. "Get lost."
After saying that, she stopped looking at them, turned around, her light green skirt brushing against the damp ground, and walked towards the direction where the golden light was faintly visible in the depths of the rain and mist.
Jin Ping'er released the purple blade pressed against Li Xun's throat, glanced at Zhang Xiaofan, then at Bi Yao's back, chuckled, and followed after him, quickly disappearing into the misty rain.
Zhang Xiaofan, supporting the unconscious Zeng Shushu, stood there, looking in the direction they had disappeared, then glanced at the horribly injured Li Xun beside him, his back soaked in cold sweat.
He took a few deep breaths to suppress his surging blood and fear. He first walked to Li Xun's side, looked at the Yuanlei Sword stuck in his buttocks, his lips twitched, and he didn't know how to do it for a moment. After hesitating for a moment, he gritted his teeth, gripped the hilt, and pulled it out suddenly.
"Ugh..." Li Xun, still unconscious, let out another painful groan, his body twitching slightly.
Zhang Xiaofan hastily sprinkled some hemostatic powder on his wound, and then laboriously moved him and Zeng Shushu to lean against a large tree that could barely provide shelter from the rain.
After doing all this, he collapsed to the ground, looking at the two still unconscious people, and then at the wound on his arm, his heart turned cold.
The rain gradually stopped, and only the water droplets that had accumulated on the leaves occasionally fell with a patter into the muddy water.
……
Further afield, there's Qingyun Mountain and Xiaozhu Peak.
There is no gloom, poisonous fog, or murderous intent here, unlike the Dead Swamp.
The afternoon sun was shining brightly, filtering through the dense bamboo and casting dappled, shimmering light on the ground. The air was filled with the clean scent of bamboo leaves, mixed with the aroma of earth and flowers. Occasionally, the clear chirping of birds could be heard from deep within the bamboo forest.
Outside Tingzhu Pavilion, a thick, soft rattan mat was laid out on the open ground. On the mat, two little children with chubby faces and wearing light-colored jackets were twisting their bodies and playing, babbling away.
The older brother, Jiang Yunzhou, was quieter and was trying hard to grab a tuft of foxtail grass hanging down from the edge of the mat. His little hands clumsily grasped at it, and his little face was serious.
The younger sister, Jiang Yueyao, was much more lively. She giggled and rolled around on the mat, trying to grab her brother's feet. When her brother dodged her, she pouted in dissatisfaction and reached out to tug at the corner of his clothes.
Xiao Bai leaned against a bamboo rocking chair under the eaves, holding a large palm-leaf fan in her hand, gently waving it occasionally.
She wore a moon-white dress, her long hair loosely tied up, with a few strands falling beside her cheeks and swaying gently in the afternoon breeze. She didn't look at the two children; her gaze was somewhat vacant as she stared at the undulating bamboo forest in the distance, lost in thought.
The warm sunlight shone on me, the rocking chair swayed gently, making a regular, subtle creaking sound. Everything was quiet and languid, as if time flowed exceptionally slowly here.
"Godmother!"
A childish voice, slightly coquettish, rang out. It was Yueyao. She had climbed up to Xiaobai's feet at some point, tilting her little face up and looking at Xiaobai with her big, dark eyes. One of her little fingers pointed to the stone table not far away.
There was a plate of crisp, juicy peaches that Xiaobai had washed that morning.
"Peach... Peach!" Yueyao's speech was still not very clear, but her meaning was clear.
Xiao Bai snapped out of her daze and looked down at her.
The little girl's face was flushed, with tiny beads of sweat on the tip of her nose, and her big eyes were full of longing. She smiled, put down the palm-leaf fan, bent down to pick up Yueyao, walked to the stone table, picked up a peach, wiped it with a handkerchief, then carefully broke it open, removed the pit, and put a small piece of fruit to Yueyao's mouth.
"Ah—" Yueyao immediately opened her mouth wide, took a big bite, squinted her eyes with satisfaction, puffed out her cheeks, and chewed with a little bit of peach juice running down the corner of her mouth.
Xiao Bai wiped it off with a handkerchief, then broke off a small piece and fed it to Yun Zhou, who was watching eagerly. Yun Zhou took it and ate it in small bites, very politely.
"Eat slowly, don't choke," Xiaobai said softly, sitting back in the rocking chair and holding Yueyao in her arms. Yueyao leaned against her comfortably, holding a peach in one hand and unconsciously playing with a strand of her hair in the other.
"Godmother," Yunzhou finished eating the peach, looked up at her, and suddenly asked, "When are Father and Mother coming back?"
Xiao Bai paused slightly while waving the palm-leaf fan.
She looked into Yunzhou's clear eyes, which resembled Jiang Xiaochuan's, especially the way he looked at people quietly. A slight pang shot through her heart, but a gentle smile appeared on her face.
"I'll be back after I've finished my business." Her voice softened further. "Does Yunzhou miss Father and Mother?"
"Mmm!" Yunzhou nodded vigorously, her little face showing longing.
"Daddy would weave little birds for me, and Mommy would tell me stories." He paused, then added softly, "Mommy's stories weren't very good; she always talked about Daddy."
Yueyao also raised her head and said indistinctly, "Mother... Father! Hug me!"
Xiao Bai chuckled and gently pinched Yue Yao's nose: "Little glutton, do you want Daddy to hold you, or do you want the candied hawthorn Daddy brought?"
When Yueyao realized her secret had been exposed, she buried her face in Xiaobai's arms, feeling embarrassed, and giggled.
