The next second, as if burned, he jerked violently, frantically bringing his legs together and quickly turning to the side, presenting his uninjured side to Lu Xueqi. His face instantly flushed red, all the way to the roots of his neck. (The sudden movement aggravated his wounds, causing him to gasp in pain.)
"You...you turn around!" His voice trembled, filled with embarrassment and panic.
Looking at him like this, Lu Xueqi's feigned indifference began to crumble, and a faint, almost triumphant smile flashed across her eyes, but she quickly suppressed it.
"Why turn around?" she asked calmly, even with a hint of nonchalance.
"Anyway, I've already seen everything I should and shouldn't have seen before."
"That...that's not the same!" Jiang Xiaochuan's ears turned red, his neck stiffened, and he didn't dare to turn around. "That was an accident! This is...anyway, turn around! I need to change my clothes!"
Lu Xueqi didn't move. She looked at his back, which was almost curled up in a ball, and his reddened ears. Her voice was lower, but clearer: "It's too dark here. I can't see you. I don't feel safe."
Jiang Xiaochuan: "..."
He was speechless for a moment. What kind of reason was that?
He held back for a long time, then suddenly turned around, ignoring the wound, and reached out to push Lu Xueqi's shoulder, trying to forcibly turn her around.
"Turn around! Turn around now!"
Lu Xueqi let him push her, but she exerted a little force in her body, refusing to give in easily.
He was exhausted of spiritual energy and weak. He pushed twice but couldn't budge them. In the dim red light, the two of them were in a somewhat comical position, one pushing and the other slightly resisting.
"Fine, fine, I won't turn it then." Jiang Xiaochuan took a breath, gave up, and said in despair, "Then... close your eyes! Is that alright?"
Lu Xueqi glanced at him, said nothing, but did not close her eyes either.
Her gaze was clear and sharp, landing on his face before glancing down.
Jiang Xiaochuan's scalp tingled. He had no choice but to turn his back and, on a whim, try to retrieve a clean set of clothes from his storage space. Fortunately, although the connection to the storage space was weak, it was still usable. A neatly folded set of black coarse cloth clothes appeared in his hand.
He grabbed his clothes, then froze. How was he supposed to change? She was still watching from behind!
His mind raced, and he pulled out another set.
This set is light blue, made of ordinary but clean material. He bought it casually in Heyang City because he thought the color was similar to the one she often wore, so he prepared an extra set. He never expected to use it here.
He tucked the light blue dress behind his back and into Lu Xueqi's arms.
"Here you go. Change too." His voice was muffled, with a hint of recklessness: "You're dirty too, and you're still wet."
Having said that, he dared not delay any longer, nor did he dare to turn around to confirm. He hurriedly began to untie the tattered strips of cloth covering his body.
The movements were so fast and hurried that they didn't even care about tearing at the wound.
Lu Xueqi held the clean, light blue dress that still carried his body heat in her arms. She paused for a moment, then looked down at herself. The light blue dress was indeed covered in mud and bloodstains, clinging to her body wetly and uncomfortably, with chills seeping into her.
She looked up again at the figure in front of her, who was struggling with his tattered clothes with his back to her.
He moved hastily, his ears were still bright red, and the lines of his shoulders and back appeared somewhat thin in the dim light, interspersed with many bruises and scratches.
She pursed her lips, remaining silent, her fingers gently caressing the soft fabric in her arms. Then, she began to untie the ties of her own clothes, her movements unhurried, her gaze still fixed on the figure in front of her.
He hurriedly took off his shirt, revealing a well-defined but not exaggerated back, his shoulder blades rising and falling slightly with the movement.
His skin was pale from years of lack of sunlight, covered with new wounds as well as some fainter old scars. He quickly put on a clean black shirt and then went to unbuckle his belt.
Lu Xueqi's fingers, which were untying her belt, paused almost imperceptibly. She lowered her eyes, her long eyelashes concealing the emotions within them, and continued to undress herself. However, a glimmer of light still lingered in the corner of her eye, quietly resting on that small space.
Jiang Xiaochuan was completely unaware; he was in a frantic rush, his mind a complete mess, only thinking about getting it over with as quickly as possible.
After finally managing to put on his clean trousers and tighten his belt, he let out a long sigh of relief. He felt as if he had fought a tough battle, even more tiring than when he dealt with those demonic cult members.
He wiped away non-existent cold sweat from his forehead and turned around.
Lu Xueqi had just finished tying the last ribbon. The light blue dress was a little too big for her, making her figure appear even more slender.
Her long, wet hair was draped behind her, still dripping water. Her face was pale, but her eyebrows and eyes, in the dim red light, had a breathtakingly clean appearance.
She looked up at him, her gaze calm, as if nothing had just happened.
Jiang Xiaochuan looked away somewhat awkwardly and cleared his throat: "All changed?"
"Mm," Lu Xueqi responded, folding the dirty robe she had changed out of and placing it aside.
Jiang Xiaochuan crumpled up his tattered clothes and threw them at his feet, and another silence fell between them. Only the red light emanating from the God-Slaying Spear quietly diffused in the darkness.
After a while, Lu Xueqi looked at the boundless darkness around her and said, "We don't know where we are, and we can't stay here any longer. Should we... wander around and see if there's an exit?"
Jiang Xiaochuan was also observing the environment. The ground beneath his feet seemed solid, but he was surrounded by black water, and he couldn't see anything in the distance. The air was filled with a cold and deathly atmosphere, as well as a kind of... vague and uncomfortable feeling of being watched. However, he was exhausted of spiritual energy, and Lu Xueqi was even weaker. It would be too dangerous to explore the unknown darkness rashly.
"Don't rush off." He shook his head and sat down against the cold rock wall behind him.
"It's relatively safe here for now. We're both exhausted of our spiritual energy and injured. If we wander around recklessly and encounter something, we won't even have the strength to fight back. It's better to rest and recuperate here first. Once we have some strength to protect ourselves, we can figure out a way to get out of here."
Lu Xueqi thought about it and felt that it made sense. She was even having some difficulty standing now. She nodded and sat down not far from him, about an arm's length away.
After sitting down, there was another period of silence.
Darkness and silence amplify the senses, and also amplify a certain unease.
Jiang Xiaochuan felt he should say or do something to break the awkward silence.
He thought for a moment, then reached into his pocket again, rummaged around, and pulled out a small oil paper packet.
Inside were several thumb-sized, amber-colored sugar cubes, which gleamed lustrous in the dark red light.
He picked up a piece and handed it to Lu Xueqi.
"Give."
Lu Xueqi looked at the candy in his palm, then looked up at him again.
His face showed no particular expression; he simply handed it over casually, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. She reached out and took it. Her fingertips touched his palm; it was slightly cool, and the candy carried a trace of the warmth left by his hand.
Jiang Xiaochuan also picked up a piece and put it in his mouth.
The sweetness melted on his tongue, carrying a faint fragrance of osmanthus, and slid down his throat, as if slightly dispelling the chill and fatigue in his body. He closed his eyes comfortably.
"Is it sweet?" he asked vaguely, his mouth full of candy.
Lu Xueqi held the candy but didn't eat it.
She looked at the candy, then at his squinting, somewhat satisfied profile, and softly hummed in agreement.
"sweet."
"You haven't eaten yet." Jiang Xiaochuan turned to look at her, puzzled.
Lu Xueqi's gaze shifted from the candy to his eyes. Her eyes, illuminated by the red light, were bright and clear, reflecting his image perfectly.
"I know," she said.
Jiang Xiaochuan was taken aback. Know what? Know it's sweet? You knew that before you even tasted it?
He didn't quite understand, but he didn't ask any further questions.
And so, one with a candy in his mouth, the other with a candy in his hand, they listened to the monotonous sound of water in the silent darkness.
