Wild cultivation begins with wielding the Taiyin talisman.

Chapter 19: First Display of Power in Slaying Demons

To defend against the hyenas' attacks, the people on the periphery had to kneel and crouch, ready for battle. Ning Che and his group, seeing that the distance was relatively close, fired their arrows in rapid succession. Even so, some people were bitten on the legs, letting out mournful howls.

Despite the danger, Shi Yong remained calm and immediately gave orders: "The wounded must retreat and immediately fill the gap!"

Ning Che, being too far away, didn't step forward to cover for them. He saw that the two wounded men, whose names he didn't know, were unable to stand. Although a single hit from a hyena would basically kill them, they probably wouldn't be able to withstand a second blow either.

Even more dangerously, with wounded soldiers unable to move freely in the formation, and the need to lower the center of gravity on the outer side for defense, it was no longer possible to fight and move at the same time.

Ning Che regulated his breathing, drew his bow, and shot another hyena.

There were already more than ten corpses on the ground, plus a few still struggling, so their gains were quite significant, and some of the hyenas could be clearly seen retreating.

A short, rapid, and high-pitched cry rang out from the pack of hyenas.

A group of stronger hyenas rushed out from among them. Unlike most of their companions, they were not skinny and had well-defined muscles.

Ning Che's expression was solemn. He fired three more arrows, but missed two of them.

These things are really hard to deal with; they run too fast and are relatively small targets. Some people cursed angrily, but they could only watch helplessly as they crashed into the outer defense line.

Roars and screams erupted, and almost instantly, two people in front of Ning Che fell.

One of them chopped off the dog's head with a backhand. But the dog still held on tightly to his calf, and he gritted his teeth and crawled back. The other one fell to the ground and was instantly grabbed by several hyenas and dragged away, unable to hold on to the ground no matter how hard he tried.

Seeing this, Ning Che did not hesitate. He stepped forward, raised his hand, threw out the longbow, and then twisted his waist and hips to deliver a precise swing punch.

A hyena's jaw was dislocated.

Ning Che advanced again, delivering another punch. Accompanied by a whimper, a hyena that was trying to pounce was sent flying five or six meters away.

Just then, he suddenly felt the Dao talisman flickering, and a sense of alertness arose within him.

To his left front, in an area that had been empty, smoke and dust erupted, and a semi-transparent shadow rushed towards him like an arrow.

At the same time, Ning Che followed his intuition, lowered his body, and threw a third punch downwards.

He felt as if he had struck something incredibly hard and angular. And the translucent shadow then took shape.

It was indeed a hyena, about the same size as its kind, but significantly stronger. Moreover, it could turn invisible! If it weren't for this wondrous use of the Daoist talisman, he would probably have lost a leg in that attack.

Without hesitation, Ning Che gave it no chance to catch its breath and stepped forward to deliver another punch with his left hand.

As for his right hand, it was too sore to make a fist because it had just been hit on the head.

At the same time, an arrow came whistling through the air, blocking its retreat.

The hyena demon had no choice but to charge forward again, attempting to tear Ning Che apart.

Ning Che would never give it such a chance. With a muffled thud, his fist slammed solidly into its head, causing it to let out a whimper.

Ning Che let out a low growl, ignoring the other hyenas that were pouncing on him, twisted his body and swung his elbow, pressing down with his entire weight.

"Be careful!"

It's Mancang shouting.

"Inner circle and wounded, hold your ground! Outer circle, follow me!"

It was Shi Yong shouting.

At the same time, Ning Che broke the hyena demon's neck and activated the Dao talisman, causing invisible ripples to spread out.

The dozen or so hyenas that were about to charge suddenly hesitated.

This moment is enough.

He collapsed onto the hyena demon's corpse. Man Cang and Shi Yong rushed over almost simultaneously, forcing back the hyena pack that had just recovered. Then, a defensive line was quickly rebuilt around Ning Che.

Another short, rapid, and high-pitched cry rang out, and the hyena pack, having lost their leader, gave up and retreated towards the valley.

Ning Che finally breathed a sigh of relief, recalling Shi Ying's words, "Legend has it that in some extremely prestigious inheritances, these two effects can coexist," and couldn't help but feel excited.

But now was not the time to be happy. He quickly suppressed his excitement and struggled to get up.

Shi Yong pulled him up and bumped fists in congratulations. Bumping fists is a local custom of honoring warriors; it can be used to praise a brave person or to celebrate a great achievement.

The rest of the hunting party also bumped fists, the crisp sound echoing throughout. Shi Yong patted Ning Che on the shoulder and laughed heartily, "Impressive! Killing a demon on your first hunt, just like your father did back then!"

"Was my father like that back then?"

"Yes, he's a true genius, it's a pity..." Shi Yong's expression turned somewhat somber, filled with regret. But he quickly composed himself and addressed the group, "From now on, Xing will be my right-hand man in the team. His word is my word. The entire team must cooperate with Xing's actions, understand?"

Everyone turned to look at Ning Che, some surprised, others delighted. But at this moment, no one questioned him; they all nodded in agreement.

A few days ago at the training ground, Ning Che had already proven his wisdom and courage. Although the fat woman's performance was poor, and no one knew exactly how strong Ning Che was, his ability to kill the demon and resolve the crisis was enough to convince everyone.

The hyenas had disappeared from everyone's sight. Shi Yong did not push forward. He first glanced at the wounded who were bleeding profusely in the formation, and then waved his hand to suppress the cheers of the crowd: "Alright, stop celebrating! Let's retreat to the flat ground over there that is sheltered from the wind. Those who are not injured, please move the seriously injured ones!"

"Fugui, you take two men and gather up the hyena carcasses on the ground. Collect everything usable, including the fur and claws. Burn the rest in one pile to prevent the smell of blood from attracting other creatures!"

At a command, the hunters sprang into action, and the previously scattered formation quickly returned to order. Ning Che also went to check and found ten hunters with bitten legs. Six of them had their lower legs at an odd angle, their faces pale with pain, and their foreheads were covered in cold sweat; they were likely already broken.

The other four, whose legs weren't broken, hopped on one leg, afraid to put any weight on them. Mancang went to a nearby grove of dead trees and found them some thick branches to use as walking sticks.

Shi Yong had brought a bag of wound medicine and was applying it to each of them one by one. Short screams and gasps for breath could be heard from time to time.

Ning Che shook his right hand, grabbed a handful of medicine, and went to apply medicine to the other person.

He crouched down, pressed down on the hunter's knee, his fingertips avoiding the exposed wound, and said in a steady voice, "Bear with it." The hunter gritted his teeth and nodded hard, then let out a suppressed cry of pain.

The application of medicine was quickly completed. Man Cang came over, grabbed a wounded soldier, and was about to carry him on his back. Ning Che quickly stopped him, saying, "He's badly injured; you can't do that."

Mancang asked, puzzled, "Then what should we do?"

Ning Che hesitated for a moment, looked at the withered trees beside him, glanced around, and asked, "Does anyone have a rope? Strips of cloth will do too."
