Chapter 26: Beast Tide
After spending these past few days together, Shi Yong had come to trust Ning Che's abilities. Upon hearing this, his eyes lit up, and his brow relaxed slightly. He hurriedly asked, "How will it change?"
Ning Che took half a step forward and glanced at the hunters present: "The circular formation we are practicing now is indeed very comprehensive when we have enough manpower."
But now, with nearly half their manpower lost and many wounded, they've managed to spread their forces into a large, thin circle, like a windowpane. Not only will their defenses inevitably weaken, but even if they manage to train, if the beast tide tears a hole, it will be very difficult to replenish their ranks.
He crouched down, picked up a pebble, and drew a simple array diagram on the ground. He continued, "My method is to break down the large array into smaller ones, like this, as you can see:"
First, divide into small teams. Those of us who can move will be divided into four teams. Uncle Fugui will lead a few skilled archers to form a ranged team, away from the main battlefield, to find positions for support. Then, three melee teams will be arranged in a triangular formation: the armored and spear-wielding team will be at the front, the second and third teams will guard the flanks, leaving a passage in the middle for maneuvering…”
After he finished speaking, Shi Yong stared at the array diagram on the ground for a long time, then suddenly slapped his thigh: "Great idea! Let's do it your way!"
The hunters' previously low morale was somewhat lifted. They took their positions as Ning Che had instructed and practiced diligently all morning, but their skills were only in their initial stages.
Even this prototype is already much better than the previous circular formation.
After practicing the entire formation, Fugui put down his hard bow, gave Ningche a thumbs up, and forced a smile on his rough face: "You kid, you were born for this. How did you come up with such a powerful formation?"
Ning Che wiped the sweat from his forehead, smiled, and was about to speak when he heard the sound of a gong.
Clang—Clang—Clang—
This means that the monsters have launched an attack.
This is only the second day since the disaster struck, and the hunting party killed two demons just yesterday!
Everyone in the garrison paled, but Fugui was the first to react. He grabbed a heavy bow from the ground, slung his quiver over his shoulder, and shouted, "Grab your weapons! Get to the defensive line!"
The hunters sprang into action, grabbing their spears and machetes leaning against the wall and charging towards the village entrance like madmen. Ning Che didn't stop, rushing into the armory of the camp first, just as Shi Yong was charging out with several machetes, and they bumped right into each other.
"Get a weapon? Here!" Shi Yong handed one to Ning Che, saying, "The group isn't familiar enough with this formation yet, so we'll need you to coordinate things at crucial moments."
Ning Che took the knife, weighed it in his hand, and after confirming it was the right size, ran in the direction from which the gong sounded, asking as he ran, "I understand, where are the three mountain guards?"
"Those three sons of bitches!" Shi Yong gritted his teeth. "We've already banged the gong, and they still haven't come out of the house. I think they're determined to stay put!"
Soon, the crowd followed the sound of the gong to the east of the village. The elderly, women, and children had already hidden inside the houses, while outside, several men with hoes and sickles were fighting with two wild boars.
Seeing this, everyone quickened their pace and rushed to the already tilted barricade.
Further ahead, in the dense forest.
A large herd of wild boars, tusks raised and short, thick limbs kicking the dry earth, charged towards them in a dark mass. Their loose bristles were covered in mud and withered grass, and each one bared its sharp tusks; clearly, they were the ones who had knocked the chevaux-de-frise over.
Above, a dozen or so iron-feathered sparrows circled, seemingly searching for an opportunity. Ning Che frowned upon seeing this.
There's clearly no air defense; they can only rely on the arrows of the three-man ranged squad. But the Ironfeathered Sparrows fly extremely fast, making accuracy a major problem. If these Ironfeathered Sparrows manage to strike at the crucial moment, they'll likely suffer heavy losses.
"Ranged squad, attack the Ironfeather Sparrow first! Everyone else, form up in your previous positions," Ning Che shouted.
He was about to engage the wild boar herd in close combat, and he didn't know if he still had time to shoot down the iron-feathered sparrows.
Fu Gui, along with two archers, climbed onto the nearby rooftop and, upon hearing this, simultaneously released their bows. Three iron-tipped arrows shot through the air. The iron-feathered sparrow at the front, which was about to swoop down, was unable to dodge in time and had its wing pierced by the arrow. It let out a mournful cry and fell straight to the ground.
The remaining iron-feathered sparrows were startled, and they circled around in larger circles, but refused to retreat.
"Team One, guard the front, raise your spears and push forward, don't let the wild boars easily break through the barricades. Teams Two and Three, guard the flanks, seize opportunities to kill the boars." Ning Che gave the orders while simultaneously wielding his knife and slashing into the body of a wild boar.
But the wild boar was tough and thick-skinned. Not only did it not die, but it was also aroused to its ferocity and charged forward with even greater speed, about to crash into the barricade.
Just then, a spear pierced through its body like a venomous snake, penetrating more than a foot deep before being pulled out, accompanied by a trail of foul-smelling blood. It staggered, then was knocked to the ground by other wild boars charging from behind.
It's fully stocked.
He and Ning Che exchanged a knowing glance, and then continued to fight their respective enemies.
Fu Gui also achieved some success, quickly shooting down two more Iron-feathered Sparrows. The remaining Iron-feathered Sparrows finally realized that circling like this would only put them at a disadvantage. With a cry, they all swooped down.
Meanwhile, the wild boars on the front lines continued their frenzied charge, with more boars trampling over the corpses of their fallen comrades as they relentlessly charged forward. One of them, as it approached, suddenly emitted a faint, earthy-yellow glow, and even when two spears were thrust into its body, they could not penetrate it.
It's a demon!
Shi Yong was prepared; he leaped out of the barricade and delivered a fatal blow.
Shi Yong's strike was powerful and heavy. The blade cleaved into the top of the boar demon's skull with a clang, sending sparks flying. The boar demon roared in pain, its head snapping violently, causing Shi Yong's blade to fly out of his hand.
The foot-long fangs then flared upwards, about to pierce Shi Yong's body.
"Watch out!" Ning Che's pupils shrank sharply as he shouted, gripping his machete tightly and pushing off with his feet to cross the barricade and go to provide support.
The wind howled.
The long-absent Iron-feathered Sparrow Demon reappeared, flapping its wings and soaring swiftly through the dense forest, its beak, forged of steel, aimed straight for Ning Che's nape.
It took Ning Che only a short time to react from that distance. There was no way he could withstand the attack head-on; he had to defend. But if he defended, who could save Shi Yong?
Ning Che didn't care about anything else and immediately tried to activate the Dao Talisman.
Just then, he heard Shi Gu let out a cold snort.
Two streaks of white smoke shot out from behind like arrows. The Iron Feather Sparrow had to brake abruptly and fly backward, while the Wild Boar Demon was unable to dodge in time, a bloody hole appearing between its eyebrows, and it collapsed to the ground.
Ning Che looked back and, sure enough, saw Shi Gu walking slowly towards him with his hands behind his back. His graying temples swayed slightly in the wind, but his face was flushed.
