Chapter 16 The Wind Whisperer
Roman had been waiting for a long time in the open space outside the treehouse.
She was leaning against the gnarled roots of an ancient oak, idly tossing and catching a battle axe.
The weapon, weighing over ten kilograms, felt weightless in her hands, its cold gleam reflecting as it flew through the air.
Seeing Anton come out, she grabbed the axe handle and went up to him: "You got kept after school again? Teacher Darian really cares about you."
"I wish he wouldn't take it so seriously," Anton shook his head.
His focus has always been on cultivating immortality; learning magic is merely a cover for himself. If Darian hopes that he will shine in the path of magic, he is destined to be disappointed.
"Continuing like this isn't a solution. Professor Darian seems to have realized something. We need to find an opportunity to bring things into the open so we don't have to hide it anymore."
Anton pondered to himself.
Seeing Anton deep in thought and silent, Roman didn't disturb him and followed him out of the training ground.
She was the only person in the clan who knew that Anton harbored a secret.
Although she didn't know the more specific details, she chose to trust Anton and never asked too many questions.
The two walked side by side up the winding tree-lined walkway.
Sunlight pierced through layers of leaves, casting dappled golden spots on the ground.
The air was filled with the sweet fragrance of ripe honeysuckle flowers, and occasionally a songbird would fly by, its chirping clear and crisp like shattered jade.
As they approached the residential area, Anton saw a group of elves walking out in the distance.
The four or five men at the head of the group were dressed in fine leather armor with vine patterns and short swords with leaf blades hanging from their waists; they were clearly guards of the forest guard.
Behind them followed more than a dozen elf men and women, some wearing ordinary leather armor and others wearing gray-blue robes. Anton had seen many of their faces in the training ground.
"They're veterans from the training grounds." Roman lowered his voice, pointing the axe handle towards the crowd. "Eleanor is here too."
Anton looked in the direction she pointed.
Eleanor Silvermoon walked in the middle of the procession, her long emerald green hair tied up with silver threads, and a wreath woven from silver leaves and morning dew flowers adorning her head.
She had exquisite features, walked with composure, and possessed an innate, indescribable air of elegance.
Anton was very familiar with the granddaughter of this clan elder.
It wasn't just because Eleanor was very famous among the younger generation, but also because Darian had used this genius to motivate him many times, subtly and overtly advising him to focus more on learning magic, to the point that he was almost tired of hearing it.
"What are they doing here?" Anton asked casually.
Roman thought for a moment and said, "It should be for actual combat training. I heard the teacher mention it a few days ago."
In the Elven race, 100 years old is considered adulthood.
Most elven clans have the custom of holding a coming-of-age ceremony, and on the day of the ceremony, they arrange an assessment.
Only elves who pass the test can join the guard.
Those who fail to pass the test will be relegated to the second line and can only engage in logistical work.
The Silvermoon Clan was no exception.
For the young elves of the clan, joining the Forest Guard is an honor in itself.
Therefore, all elves must begin practical training after reaching the age of 60 to cultivate real combat skills and prepare for the assessment.
As for the actual combat targets, there are extraordinary creatures captured from outside, as well as invaders who were captured after invading the Silvermoon Forest.
For example, the lizard people.
"A hands-on course...?"
Anton's heart skipped a beat.
This might be a good opportunity.
When he displayed his martial arts skills in front of Roman before, he had thought about adding the "dual cultivation of magic and martial arts" halo to himself. Now that he thinks about it carefully, it seems to be feasible.
The dual cultivation of magic and martial arts is not simply about having one hand in combat skills and the other in magic, but about perfectly combining the two to form a brand new magical combat skill.
This is remarkably similar to the divine martial arts techniques in the cultivation system.
Furthermore, the combinations of different magic and combat techniques result in various magical combat techniques, with an excessive number of types.
This also results in each warrior who is proficient in both magic and martial arts having their own unique fighting style.
If I could add a dual cultivation of magic and martial arts to my character, then no matter what martial arts techniques I used in the future, as long as they weren't too outrageous, I could get away with it.
Even magic can be explained.
One good thing about the elves is that there isn't as much infighting within their race.
As long as they can get away with it, the clansmen won't investigate further.
In a human town, he would have to keep the secret to himself and not divulge even a single word.
Anton thought about it more and more and it seemed feasible.
Although this setup certainly can't be kept secret for long, and he'll eventually be exposed as he gets stronger, it doesn't matter. By then, with his strength, he won't be afraid of being targeted by others.
Roman, unaware of Anton's thoughts, continued, "I heard that Eleanor plans to take on the Windtalker Trial during her coming-of-age ceremony. If she succeeds, our clan will have another Windtalker."
Anton raised an eyebrow in surprise.
This idea coincided with his own.
He didn't say it aloud, but he was actually planning to take on the Wind Whisperer Trial.
The Wind Whisperer is to the Elven race what a warrior of the Orc tribe is to a hero—a title bestowed upon the brave and powerful.
Every young elf who earns the title of Wind Whisperer is a genius who surpasses all others of his generation.
This is both an honor and a testament to strength.
In the ancient traditions of the Elven clans, some senior Windtalkers even have the right to attend the council of elders, and even just by listening in, it is a great recognition.
Of course, the Wind Whisperer's trial is also hellish in difficulty.
The last person in the Silvermoon Clan to receive the title of Wind Whisperer was the deceased former clan chief.
Since then, the Silvermoon Clan has sent elves to challenge the Windwhisperer's Trial every year, but there has never been a successful case.
Anton's reason for challenging the Wind Whisperer's Trial was not for the glory, but because the Wind Whisperer had an extremely tempting privilege—the freedom to enter and leave the forest.
It's important to know that even the forest guards cannot leave the forest at will outside of their missions.
The Wind Whisperer was the only exception.
Just for this privilege, Anton is determined to get the title of Wind Whisperer.
At the same time.
At the front of the tree-covered corridor, the group of elves also noticed Anton and Roman and turned their gazes toward them.
Anton and Roman are quite famous among the young elves.
Initially, it was because of their unconventional behavior, but later it was because of their outstanding talents.
Not to mention Anton, who possesses a super-magical physique, Roman has also been praised by his combat skills instructor as a natural-born warrior. It is said that he has now broken through to the Black Iron rank, making him stronger than many older elves.
"Oh, it's Anton and Roman."
Hearing Lyra's voice beside her, Eleanor turned her head and looked at Anton, her brows furrowing unconsciously.
Leila, who was standing nearby, covered her mouth and laughed, "You still remember what the Elder said."
Eleanor gave a soft hum, without denying it.
Leila couldn't help but chuckle.
Her friend was outstanding in every way, except for being overly competitive.
She overheard the elder talking to Darian once, praising Anton's talent as being superior to his granddaughter's, and she kept those words in mind ever since.
From then on, he regarded Anton as a rival, comparing himself to him in everything he did, regardless of what Anton thought.
"Anton didn't do anything, and suddenly you've become his competitor. Isn't that a bit unfair?" Leila teased.
Eleanor frowned slightly and said in a low voice, "He clearly has an extremely rare super-magical physique, but he is half-hearted and not focused on magic. Such a person is not worthy of Grandpa's praise at all, and I do not admit that I am worse than him."
Leila's smile faded slightly, and she sighed inwardly, saying no more.
She knew that Eleanor's ambition was to become a clan chief like her father and lead the clan back to its former glory. She had put in unimaginable effort for this, waiting for the day she would gain her grandfather's approval.
Who would have thought that Anton would suddenly appear out of nowhere?
What Eleanor found even more difficult to accept was that Anton didn't seem to cherish this talent, which she considered a complete waste of it.
"Let's go."
Eleanor looked away and quickened her pace.
She secretly vowed to pass the trials and become a Wind Whisperer, so that her grandfather would know who was the best.
