Peninsula: I run a bed and breakfast on Jeju Island
Chapter 59 Eggs
Lee Ji-eun was a little embarrassed.
She seems to be overestimating herself.
They didn't intend to wait at all; they had just woken up from a nap.
She smoothed the stray hairs from her forehead and glanced to the side.
"By the way, are you still making seaweed soup?"
"Huh? Ah!" Li Ran's voice pulled her back from her reverie.
"Didn't you just say you didn't eat much outside? Want to eat some more with me or what?" He continued cutting the tofu on the cutting board.
Lee Ji-eun blinked, looking at the seaweed soup ingredients that had been prepared on the stove.
"Then let's eat some more. I can make seaweed soup."
"I haven't done this in a long time, and I feel a bit rusty."
Upon hearing this, Li Ran felt a sense of unease.
"Maybe we should just forget about it. We can do it later," he advised.
Lee Ji-eun looked at him suspiciously, then gently shook her head. "It's nothing. Seaweed soup is the dish I'm most skilled at making."
"When I made it for Zhenli last year, she said it was delicious!" she said confidently.
He raised an eyebrow, thinking, "Are you sure you're not just giving me a symbolic encouragement?"
"Did you cook all the dishes back then?" he asked tentatively.
Lee Ji-eun shook her head. "No. We ate at my house. My mom cooked most of it."
That makes much more sense.
He nodded.
He figured that Choi Jin-ri wasn't very good at cooking, and Lee Ji-eun was probably only good at seaweed soup. He couldn't just keep drinking soup that day, could he?
It seems that Lee Ji-eun's mother is backing her up.
Lee Ji-eun took the dried kelp out and put it into the basin.
She remembered that seaweed needed to be soaked in cold water for about ten or twenty minutes.
She couldn't quite remember, so she thought for a moment and decided to just take a middle one, fifteen minutes would be fine.
Lee Ji-eun set a 15-minute countdown on her phone.
Li Ran glanced at it but didn't notice anything unusual for the time being.
He had already cut the tofu, leaving the cutting board empty.
She moved closer to the cutting board, holding the cleaver to prepare to cut the beef.
Her knife skills weren't outstanding; sometimes she used a bit of brute force, but they weren't as rough as Li Ran had imagined.
It's probably the kind of cooking I do occasionally.
Lee Ji-eun sliced the beef into thin slices and then piled them on the cutting board.
While the kelp was still soaking in water, Li Ran started making fried rice with eggs.
He cracked the egg into the bowl, stirring it with his chopsticks until it made a clanging sound.
Lee Ji-eun glanced at it and said, "I noticed that when you crack the eggs, hardly any shell fragments fall in."
"When I'm beating the eggs myself, small pieces of shell always fall into the bowl along with the egg mixture. Then I can't pick them out no matter how hard I try with chopsticks."
Li Ran smiled and said, "I was like that at first too. Sometimes when I was making scrambled eggs, if the shell fragments weren't too big, I would just ignore them."
"Later I discovered that if I crack two eggs together, or crack one egg on a flat surface, it's less likely that any shell fragments will fall into the bowl."
Upon hearing this, Lee Ji-eun blinked.
Is that so?
She'll try it next time.
Lee Ji-eun stood next to the basin of soaking seaweed, picking up a piece of seaweed every now and then to look at it before putting it back.
She occasionally glanced at Li Ran.
He was pouring the egg mixture into the hot oil.
With a sizzling sound, golden bubbles quickly appeared around the edge of the egg mixture.
"Ding-dong~ Ding-dong~"
The ringing of her phone alarm clock brought her back to her senses.
Fifteen minutes have passed.
Lee Ji-eun bent down, took out the soaked kelp, drained it, and then cut it into strips on the cutting board.
On the other side, Li Ran also ladled the cooked egg fried rice into a large ceramic bowl.
We'll serve them as much as they can eat. Any leftovers will be fed to Xiao Hei.
After cleaning up the mess, Li Ran turned her gaze to Li Zhi'en.
She suddenly felt immense pressure.
She followed the steps from memory, operating them one by one.
Lee Ji-eun poured the seasonings into the pot and stewed them together with the beef and kelp.
It takes about half an hour to stew, by which time the fried rice will probably be cold.
The two looked at each other.
Lee Ji-eun then realized that she had forgotten about the differences in cooking time for the dishes.
Li Ran had never made seaweed soup before, and he didn't know exactly how long it would take. So he made fried rice with eggs first.
"How much longer do we need to cook it?" he asked.
Lee Ji-eun pursed her lips and gently bit her lower lip. "It might take another half hour."
She glanced at the large bowl of fried rice with eggs, then at the bubbling seaweed soup in the pot.
"Why don't you eat first?" She blinked. "At least I ate something outside. Didn't you just wake up? Your stomach is still empty."
Li Ran gently shook her head. "What would it mean if I ate alone?"
He glanced at the seaweed soup. "Anyway, it's not ready yet. Let's eat some to fill our stomachs."
Before Lee Ji-eun could answer, he began to scoop out fried rice into a bowl.
After serving the fried rice, Li Ran handed the bowl to her, "Here, eat some now."
She pursed her lips and took the bowl and chopsticks.
He then went to the living room and brought out two more stools.
Someone needs to stay in the kitchen to keep an eye on the seaweed soup. It wouldn't be good if it overflowed.
But it wouldn't be good to leave anyone in the kitchen, so we might as well all eat some fried rice together in the kitchen.
Lee Ji-eun sat on the stool and used chopsticks to stir the fried rice.
Then, her eyes lit up.
Li Ran's fried rice tasted good.
"Your fried rice is delicious."
He also shoveled some rice into his mouth. "Practice makes perfect. Before I had Xiao Hei, I would just make fried rice from leftovers."
"I see." Lee Ji-eun nodded.
Although Li Ran's fried rice was quite delicious, it was still a bit dry after eating too much.
Lee Ji-eun poured two glasses of water and handed one of them to Lee Ran.
He took the water glass and drank it all in one gulp.
He had just finished eating the fried rice in his bowl.
He eats quite quickly; it's a habit he developed when he was in school.
When he looked at Lee Ji-eun, he found that she had also finished her fried rice, as if she was eating at the same speed as Lee Ran.
He placed the empty bowl and chopsticks on the stove, glanced at the bubbling seaweed soup, and asked, "Is it almost ready?"
Lee Ji-eun turned her head and glanced at it, then casually placed the bowl and chopsticks on the stove. "It's not almost done, it's already done."
"Come and try my cooking!"
Upon hearing this, Li Ran silently bowed to all the deities in her heart.
May the Heavenly Venerable bestow boundless blessings, Amitabha Buddha, Amen...
No matter which direction the god comes from, any god who can help him is a good god.
Lee Ji-eun picked up the seaweed soup with a rag in her hand. "Come on, let's go to the dining table. We can't keep eating in the kitchen."
"I'll bring it."
"Need not."
As soon as she finished speaking, she hobbled off with her short legs, carrying the seaweed soup to the dining table.
Li Ran raised an eyebrow, tidied up the kitchen stools, and then followed.
This time, it was Lee Ji-eun who took the initiative to serve the rice.
She served the seaweed soup to Li Ran and then looked at him expectantly.
He suddenly felt immense pressure.
