Chapter 92 Falling Asleep with Music
"Sure!"
Choi Jin-ri nodded decisively, which surprised Li Ran slightly.
"Well----"
He got stuck.
"What? Didn't you say you were going to help me sleep?"
Although it was just a voice call and he couldn't see Choi Jin-ri's expression, he could already imagine Choi Jin-ri tilting her head slightly and smiling.
"That's true, but how would you like me to help you sleep?"
"Tell a story? Or sing a lullaby?"
"Just so you know, I'm tone-deaf."
"Really?" Choi Jin-ri blinked.
"You've made me even more curious. Why don't you sing a couple of lines?"
Li Ran scratched his eyebrows. "Alright then."
"Ahem," he cleared his throat.
The dark sky hangs low.
"The bright stars follow me~"
"The insects fly, the insects fly~"
Who are you missing?
He sang in Chinese.
Although Choi Jin-ri couldn't understand the lyrics, just listening to the melody gave her a sense of peace.
"Ah~"
Choi Jin-ri drawled, "Didn't you say you were tone-deaf?"
She pursed her lips, "You sang quite well."
Li Ran coughed lightly, "I'm just lowering my expectations in advance."
"Besides, you don't understand Chinese, how would you know if I sang well or not?"
"Not understanding the lyrics doesn't mean I can't understand the feeling. I can listen to the melody!"
She rolled over, clutching the blanket, and held her phone to her ear. "This melody is so soothing, and you seem to have a steady breath control when you sing it."
"What's the name of this song?" she asked.
Li Ran could vaguely hear the rustling sound of the blanket rubbing against each other as she turned over in the voice recording, as well as very light breathing.
"The Little Insects," he said, pulling the blanket up a little higher. "It's a lullaby from our area."
"I see." Choi Jin-ri's voice carried a hint of amusement. "No wonder it makes me want to sleep just listening to it."
Are you praising me or insulting me?
"You're being kind! Didn't you say it was a lullaby?" Choi Jin-ri smiled. "Really, even though it's in a language I don't understand, the melody is very gentle. Why don't you sing it again?"
Upon hearing this, Li Ran's lips curled up slightly.
It seems I do have a lot of musical talent!
So he started singing again.
His voice wasn't loud, and his pronunciation was a bit lazy, as if he himself was also drowsy.
When Li Ran sang "The roses on the ground withered," she forgot some of the lyrics and just hummed a couple of short verses.
Choi Jin-ri raised an eyebrow but remained silent.
Anyway, she couldn't understand the lyrics.
Li Ran didn't know how long he sang; he only felt that it was very quiet on the other end of the phone.
He switched the phone to the other ear and leaned it against the headboard to listen.
There was a slight gust of wind occasionally, probably because the window wasn't closed properly.
"Asleep?" he asked softly.
"No. Can you sing it again?" she continued to plead with Li Ran.
"I'm not singing anymore." Li Ran shook her head.
Why?
"No lullaby is played over and over again. Are you here to listen to music or to sleep? If you keep singing it, you'll wake up."
She pouted. "Sleep-inducing songs should be sung on repeat! They shouldn't end until I fall asleep."
.
Li Ran was at a loss for words, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
"Are you using me as a music player?"
"Is that not allowed?"
"Singing it so many times, my throat can't take it anymore!"
"Okay." Choi Jin-ri nodded.
She huddled closer to the blanket, her voice muffled, "When I have insomnia, it's hard for me to find something I can listen to for a long time."
"Sometimes watching TV dramas is too noisy."
"Listening to music can easily make you more energetic the more you listen."
"Today's song—" she paused, "feels just right."
Li Ran leaned against the headboard, holding her phone and remaining silent for two seconds.
I don't know if it's because people are more soft-hearted at night, or if Choi Jin-ri's words were just too emotional.
He was about to call it a day, but after hearing what she said, he found it hard to refuse.
He sighed, "Alright, I'll sing it one last time."
"Hehe, okay! One last time, a billion times!"
Li Ran adjusted her posture and pushed the pillow back a little.
"Then close your eyes. No matter how much I sing, you won't be able to sleep if you don't close your eyes."
"It's been closed for a long time!" Choi Jin-ri's voice came from the other end of the phone.
"Really?"
"Really." She gave a soft hum. "Would I lie to you?"
Li Ran didn't expose him.
He always felt that this person was probably staring at the ceiling with their eyes open when they spoke.
Otherwise, why would she still be so energetic?
Even the singer was sleepy.
However, there's no need to take it too seriously.
He cleared his throat again.
"The dark sky hangs low."
"The bright stars follow me~"
This time, Li Ran sang even softer than before.
He didn't try hard, nor did he think about whether his singing was accurate.
When he forgot the lyrics towards the end, he just started humming.
"Hmm~ Hmm~~"
He would occasionally chime in with his own lines, sometimes even mixing up the lyrics.
As Li Ran sang, she almost forgot where she was in the song.
"The insects fly~"
"Flowers, sleep~"
"Well----"
He paused for a moment.
What came next?
Forget it.
He made up a random sentence, "Let's all go to bed early~"
A muffled laugh came from the other end of the phone.
"Li Ran————"
Choi Jin-ri's voice was slow and hesitant.
"Hmm? What's wrong?"
"Were you just singing randomly?"
"No!"
Li Ran said without batting an eye, "This is the second half of the lyrics."
"That's a lie."
She trailed off, "You clearly paused just now."
Li Ran coughed. "Alright, I really did forget my lines."
Choi Jin-ri chuckled softly twice.
The laughter wasn't loud, but it inexplicably made people feel relaxed.
"It's okay."
She whispered, "Anyway, I don't know what the original version is."
She added, "And what you just made up actually sounded pretty convincing."
"Right?" Li Ran immediately seized the opportunity, "I actually do have some creative talent."
"Hmm~"
Choi Jin-ri drawled, "Let's start with not forgetting the lyrics."
"Oh, you!"
"What's wrong with me?"
Her voice was soft, and she sounded like she was already a little sleepy.
At least he wasn't as energetic as he was at the beginning; even his tone softened a bit at the end.
"Are you sleepy?" Li Ran asked.
There was a pause of a few seconds on the other end of the phone.
"A little bit."
"That settles it then." Li Ran raised an eyebrow. "This proves my sleep aid is quite effective!"
"Maybe—ooh~"
Choi Jin-ri yawned, then quickly added another sentence.
"But it might be too late."
"You're being stubborn, aren't you?"
"No, not at all! It's just—"
"Hmm?" Li Ran blinked, trying to figure out what she wanted to say.
"The feeling of someone singing to lull you to sleep isn't so bad."
Upon hearing this, Li Ran paused slightly, then pursed her lips.
"Could you sing it again?" Choi Jin-ri asked softly.
"Alright," he nodded, "I'll do it one more time since you're almost asleep."
"Um.
""
Choi Jin-ri responded softly.
"Kansamida~".
""
Her voice was already a little slurred.
Li Ran's lips curled up slightly.
