Chapter 74 Natasha
Tony Stark stepped out of the Mark armor.
The pieces of gold and red armor were unloaded and piled up in the center of the hall.
He stood in front of the shattered French windows, his feet surrounded by broken glass. The night wind blew in through the gaps, making his hair a little messy.
He glanced at the armor with its right arm removed, the cracks smashed into the wall, and the metal parts still sparking.
Then he raised his hand to his chest, "Those two guys were pretty ruthless."
"Tony!"
Little Chili ran over from the elevator entrance, her high heels almost slipping on the broken glass.
She grabbed his wrist, pried his hand away from his chest, and checked him over thoroughly. "Are you hurt anywhere? Does your chest hurt? Or your back?"
Tony gently pushed her hand away. "It's okay, those two kids can't hurt me."
"Those two kids demolished a floor of a top-security building, and now you're accusing me of meddling?" Chili glared at him.
Just as Tony was about to speak, unhurried footsteps echoed from the stairwell.
Natasha emerged from the stairwell, dressed in a black bodysuit with a tactical belt around her waist, a smile he knew all too well on her face.
She used this smile from her first day as an assistant at Stark Industries, and even after it was discovered that she was an agent sent by S.H.I.E.L.D. to monitor him, she still wore the same smile.
Tony's face darkened. "These aren't two monsters created by your S.H.I.E.L.D. again, are they?"
Natasha swayed over, her heels clicking on the broken glass, her steps as steady as if she were walking a red carpet.
"Not this time. They came to us of their own accord." She stopped two steps away from Tony. "Recently, too many aliens and superhumans have appeared on Earth, posing a great threat to our safety. Director Fury wants to invite you to form the Avengers."
"I don't have time to play house with you guys." Tony picked up the whiskey from the bar and found that the glass had been broken in the fight.
He picked up the bottle, took a sip from the bottle opening, and said, "If you want to play, you can go find those two kids from earlier."
"They're on the list too," Natasha said.
Tony paused for a moment, his hand holding the bottle paused.
"Let me guess who else is there." He put the bottle back on the bar. "Is that old popsicle guy still here?"
"The captain is definitely the first choice."
"Anything else?"
"Dr. Banner will also be invited."
"Bruce Banner," Tony repeated the name, then leaned against the edge of the bar. "So your lineup is: a veteran who's been frozen for seventy years, a big guy who turns green when he gets angry, and two super-powered kids who've just come of age. Sounds more like summer camp."
He grabbed his coat and draped it over his shoulder, walking towards the stairwell. He paused as he passed Natasha, saying, "I hope you won't always be the last to arrive at the scene like the police next time."
Pepper chased after him, whispered an apology to Natasha at the top of the stairs, and then jogged off in her high heels to catch up with Tony.
Natasha stood there, reaching out to touch the earphones beneath her burgundy hair. "Next time, could you send Hawkeye for this kind of job?"
Nick Fury's voice came through the earpiece, "You did a great job. It's just not the right time yet."
Fury didn't give her a chance to continue. "You have a new task now: investigate those two children. I'll send you the information in a bit."
Natasha glanced at the shattered French windows and the bullet that the silver-haired boy had caught on the ground.
"A child?" She bent down to pick up a bullet, twirling it between her fingers. "That girl's figure is almost as good as mine."
Fury ignored her. "They just left. You're leaving now for Sokovia."
The nights in Sokovia are much quieter than in New York.
The apartment building was still the same drab building, and the motion-activated lights in the hallways still turned on briefly and then off.
Wanda pushed open the apartment door. The living room was empty, there was no sound of coffee being brewed in the kitchen, and the leaves of the plant on the windowsill swayed gently in the night breeze.
She stood in the doorway, her fingers unconsciously twisting the pendant around her neck.
Pietro squeezed in from behind her, threw his coat on the sofa, flopped down, buried his face in the pillow, and let out a long sigh.
Wanda did not sit down.
She walked to Lin Yan's room and pushed open the slightly ajar door.
The plant on the windowsill was still there, but no one was in the chair, and the usual coffee cup was gone from the table.
She gently closed the door, returned to the living room, and stood by the window.
Outside the window, there was the dim yellow light of the grocery store across the street.
She stood in front of that window for a long time.
A hand reached out from behind her and gently patted her on the head.
Wanda's shoulders tensed abruptly, and then she felt a presence behind her.
She turned around, and Lin Yan was standing behind her.
The dark gray coat still felt the chill of the night breeze.
She opened her arms and hugged him directly.
She crashed into his arms, burying her face in his chest and holding him tightly.
Lin Yan glanced down at her and gently patted the back of her head.
"You did a good job, you weren't blinded by hatred."
Wanda didn't look up, her voice muffled against his chest. "I almost did it."
"It almost didn't count," Lin Yan said. "Remember my words. Don't let your emotions control you."
Wanda released her grip, took a half step back, and stood to the side.
Her ears were burning red, and her eyes were fixed on the toes of her shoes, which were completely out of sight.
"Emotions can affect your abilities, which is not a good thing." Lin Yan knew that Wanda would often be controlled by her emotions and do impulsive things. "You need to learn to control yourself."
Wanda lowered her head and made a soft "hmm" sound.
Natasha arrived in Sokovia the following evening.
Nick Fury's information has been sent to her data board.
She stood opposite that drab apartment building, which looked exactly like the one in the document's photo, even down to the location where the paint was peeling off.
She crossed the street and entered the apartment building.
The motion-activated light in the hallway flickered on, illuminating the peeling paint on the walls and the old newspapers piled up in the corner.
The apartment door wasn't locked, which saved her the trouble of unlocking it.
She reached out and pushed the door open. The living room was empty, with a coat lying on the sofa and half a pancake on the table.
The intelligence indicated that the two left early this morning, which seems to be true.
Then she heard the sound of water being poured.
Lin Yan came out of the kitchen, holding a cup of freshly brewed coffee.
He was dressed in dark gray casual clothes, with the cuffs rolled up to his elbows. When he saw her, he didn't stop walking, and his expression didn't change at all.
He walked to the window, placed the coffee cup on the windowsill, and then turned to look at her.
Natasha's hand was already on the tactical dagger at her waist, but she didn't draw it.
