Chapter 99 The Throne of Bones [Please add to your favorites and read on!]
Chen Qing's body plummeted rapidly, the wind whistling in his ears, and darkness surging in from all directions.
He circulated his spiritual energy to stabilize his descent, while simultaneously extending his spiritual sense to warily scan his surroundings.
Dan Yu flapped its wings beside him, its black bean eyes gleaming eerily in the darkness; Qing Tian, on the other hand, gripped a series of protruding rocks with one hand, swinging down like a swing, making "squeaking" noises, looking quite pleased with himself.
"You're quite carefree."
Chen Qing glanced at Qing Tianzi, and his lips twitched.
After about the time it takes to drink a cup of tea, a faint light finally appeared beneath our feet.
Chen Qing lowered his spiritual power and landed steadily. He then took out two first-grade low-level "illumination talismans" and floated them on either side.
This is a naturally formed underground cavern with an immeasurably high dome. The cave walls are covered with crisscrossing cracks, and seven or eight branch passages extend out in different directions. It is deep and dark, and no one knows where they lead.
Chen Qing extended his spiritual sense and scanned the largest fork in the tunnel on the right.
Several sharp sword intents emanated from the depths, their sharpness palpable even from afar. Gao Fu, Sun Wei, and Xie Kun were clearly heading in this direction, pursuing the mysterious being who possessed the Myriad Manifestations Origin Core.
Chen Qing then looked at the fork in the road on the left. The light spots representing the world fragments on the system's light screen were flickering slightly, pointing to the left.
"Fortunately, it's not on the being that possesses the 'Origin Core of All Things'."
Chen Qing nodded slightly and turned to walk towards the left fork in the tunnel.
……
The side tunnel was much deeper than Chen Qing had imagined.
He walked along the winding passage for the time it takes for an incense stick to burn. The rocks on the cave walls gradually turned from grayish-white to dark red, and a faint smell of decay began to permeate the air, like the lingering smell of dried blood.
Chen Qing frowned, took out an antidote pill from his storage bag and held it under his tongue, then fed one to Dan Yu and Qing Tian as well.
After walking for about half a cup of tea's time, Chen Qing finally stepped out of the cave, and the scene before him made his pupils shrink slightly.
This was a vast, empty underground cavern, hundreds of feet in circumference. Several cracks appeared in the ceiling, allowing rays of moonlight to filter through and illuminate the horrifying sight at the center of the cavern—
Bones!
Countless skeletons!
This book was first published on 2009.com, providing you with a reading experience free of errors and disordered chapters.
The skeletons of humans, demons, and even some unnamed giant beasts were piled up layer upon layer, forming a white bone platform that was tens of feet in diameter.
At the very center of the high platform, atop the white bones, a throne made of skulls and limb bones stood out prominently.
The throne was entirely white, with a faint, eerie green glow flowing across its skeleton, giving it an indescribable air of mystery. And seated upon the throne was a gigantic, blood-red skeleton.
Chen Qing's pupils contracted slightly.
The skeleton was at least thirty feet tall, seated on a throne of bones, its head bowed, arms resting on the armrests. Its bones were a dark red color, as if soaked in blood and then dried. Strange patterns, like some kind of ancient runes, faintly flowed across the surface of the bones.
The moonlight shone on the skeleton, and the runes on it glowed faintly, as if they were breathing.
Chen Qing held his breath and observed carefully for a moment, feeling slightly calmer.
The blood-red skull showed no spiritual energy fluctuations, and its eye sockets were empty, as if it were a dead object—or rather, it was a dead object.
"It's alright, it's alright."
Chen Qing breathed a sigh of relief and stepped into the cave.
Dan Yu landed to his right, her black bean eyes fixed on the skeleton, her feathers standing on end slightly, as if instinctively feeling uneasy. Qing Tian also dropped his playful demeanor, his monkey eyes scanning the surroundings warily, the three golden hairs on his head trembling slightly.
"take it easy."
Chen Qing comforted the two little ones and then looked up at the bone throne.
Right on the chest of the blood-red skull, a faint light was slowly circulating, beating intermittently like a heart. Though weak, the light gave off an unfathomable feeling, as if it contained a world within it.
The system light screen pops up:
[Fragments of the World - Remains]
[Status: Currently absorbing the power of the world's origin; estimated to be completed in two and a half hours.]
"Found it."
Chen Qing was overjoyed. He leaped onto the platform of bones, stepping on the remains of those unknown creatures, and walked step by step toward the throne. The bones beneath his feet made a "crunching" sound, echoing in the empty cave, sending chills down one's spine.
But Chen Qing's expression remained unchanged, and his steps were steady.
Arriving beneath the throne, Chen Qing looked up at the thirty-foot-tall blood-red skeleton, and after confirming once again that it indeed had no reaction, he turned his attention to the ball of light.
"How do I extract it?"
Chen Qing silently recited in his heart.
The system light screen immediately responded:
[Touch and extract; estimated time: 15 minutes. Do not interrupt the process, otherwise all efforts will be wasted.]
Chen Qing pondered for a moment, then turned to Dan Yu and Qing Tian and said, "I need a quarter of an hour. You two protect me. Call me immediately if anything unusual happens."
With a soft cry, Dan Yu spread its wings and flew to the top of the throne, looking down over the entire cave. Qingtian jumped to the edge of the platform, his back to Chen Qing, his monkey eyes fixed on the passage they had come from.
Seeing that the two little ones were in their positions, Chen Qing then went to the chest of the blood-red skull and placed his hand on the ball of light.
It feels cool to the touch, like holding a piece of warm jade.
A strange feeling welled up in my heart, as if something was flowing into my body through my palm, mysterious and wonderful.
……
Meanwhile, on the other side of the cave.
A dark figure was darting swiftly through the dimly lit passage.
It was a shadowy creature, entirely black, its form as elusive as smoke, moving with incredible speed, covering dozens of feet in the blink of an eye. It was the very creature from the secret realm that Gao Fu and his companions had been chasing, the one who possessed the Myriad Manifestations Origin Core.
Suddenly, Shadow Demon stopped and turned her head sharply.
"not good!"
The Shadow Demon was terrified. It sensed that the thing it had guarded for countless years was being touched by someone, and its aura was rapidly weakening!
"Damn it! Damn it! Damn it!"
Shadowy let out a hoarse growl, his voice filled with anxiety and anger.
Ignoring the three sword cultivators relentlessly pursuing it, it moved like lightning, sprinting madly in that direction. However, after running only a few dozen feet, it suddenly stopped.
Because it sensed that the aura of that thing was changing from "weakening" to "disappearing," as if it had been transferred from this world to another space.
"No! We absolutely cannot let that thing be taken away!"
A glint of madness flashed in the Shadow Demon's eyes. It stopped, its claws tracing eerie paths in the air as it uttered an obscure incantation. The next second, a strange power surged from its body, spreading in all directions.
In an instant, the spiritual energy within a radius of thirty miles boiled over!
The earth trembled, the rock walls cracked, and countless skeletons burst forth from the ground, growing wildly as if they were alive. The skeletons piled up to form high walls, spires, and bone bridges, transforming the entire area into a separate, labyrinthine secret realm.
The sky was obscured by a dome of white bones, and moonlight leaked through the gaps between the bones, creating a mottled and dappled effect.
Within a radius of thirty miles, all the cultivators of the Canglan Domain and the creatures of the secret realm were dragged into this domain of white bones by an irresistible force.
……
in the cave.
Chen Qing was standing on one of the blood-red skull's ribs, and the progress bar had reached 76% when he suddenly felt a violent tremor in the cave.
His expression changed, and he looked down.
The white bones piled on the ground seemed to come alive, expanding and spreading wildly outwards, instantly enlarging the entire cave several times over. The bones formed walls, domes, and pillars, transforming this space into a gigantic palace of bones.
The moonlight overhead disappeared, replaced by a ghostly green glow seeping through the gaps in my bones.
Chen Qingling probed out with his spiritual sense, and his expression darkened.
This world of bones is like an independent spatial layer, isolated from the outside world, and with his cultivation level, he simply cannot forcefully break through it.
Worse still, the skeletons in the cave, which had been lifeless, now seemed to have been infused with life. They stood up, their empty eye sockets igniting with eerie green flames, and all "looked" at him!
