American comic book: Absolute Spider-Man
Chapter 5 Spider-Man: The First Dance
The atmosphere on American campuses in 2012 could be described as very open, even permissive.
The average age for sexual activity is 17, and Peter and his friends are considered conservative among the hormone-fueled high school students.
Lightning, Harry, and Ned had already gone to participate in various homecoming activities, leaving only Peter and Gwen in the hallway where everyone else had left.
"Peter, there's a homecoming dance tonight in the gym, and I happen to need a dance partner. Are you interested?"
"I'm sorry, Gwen, Parker Industries is still in its early stages. I can't leave Uncle Ben and Aunt May out there working hard while I'm enjoying myself at school."
"Oh well."
Gwen thought for a moment and then said, "In that case..."
As she spoke, she grabbed Peter's wrist and led him to an empty classroom where all the tables and chairs had been removed.
She closed the door, drew the curtains, and took out her phone to play a melodious dance song.
As the music played, Gwen extended her hand to Peter: "Mr. Parker, won't you invite me to dance?"
Peter smiled. In their relationship, Gwen had always been the one taking the initiative.
He gently took that slender, fair hand in his: "With pleasure."
He then wrapped his other arm around Gwen's waist, and Gwen gently placed her other arm on Peter's shoulder.
The two turned the dusty classroom into a dance floor and danced gracefully under the dim lights.
Peter jumped very steadily, even gracefully, which surprised Gwen.
"Peter, I had no idea you danced so well. Do you often dance with other girls?" Gwen asked while doing the dance steps.
Peter quickly denied it: "No, I learned it from a friend during the summer vacation—it's a guy."
Gwen was skeptical of Peter's answer, and she pressed on, "Where is he? Shouldn't you introduce me to this new friend?"
"He's dead."
I'm sorry.
"No need to apologize, he died a worthy death."
The two stopped talking and simply enjoyed their time alone.
Peter and Gwen both knew each other's feelings; they were only a thin veil away from a real relationship, but they were both waiting.
Throughout their relationship, Gwen was always the one taking the initiative. She actively approached Peter, who was not good at socializing, and repeatedly invited him on dates.
Having taken the initiative so many times, she is now waiting for Peter to be brave enough to confess his feelings to her.
Peter was also waiting; he was waiting until he had a certain amount of confidence before expressing his feelings to Gwen.
He didn't want Gwen to be gossiped about by others, wondering how the school beauty and academic star of Midtown High School could have fallen for the poor boy from the Parker family.
He could accept others' mockery of his financial difficulties, but he didn't want Gwen to be laughed at by those snobbish people.
After the dance ended, Peter and Gwen left the empty classroom.
The two encountered Harry—and his father, Norman Osborn—at a venue.
"Hey Peter, we're on our way to find you."
"What's wrong, Harry?"
Harry said excitedly, "Peter, the Osborne Corporation will be holding a public science fair this weekend, inviting all teachers and students of Midtown High School to the Osborne Building to participate. I'm sure you'll be interested."
Peter was overjoyed; he knew that the turning point that would change his destiny was about to arrive.
"Of course, this is much more fun than parties, dances, and football games."
Then he greeted Norman, who was standing behind Harry, saying, "Hello, Uncle Norman."
Norman, who already knew Peter, gave a rare smile.
"Hello Peter."
Peter continued, "As soon as Harry met us, he immediately started bragging to us about how you, his father, had nurtured him during the summer and how much effort you had put into him."
"Really? This kid only complains in front of me, but he actually says this to you guys in private."
"It seems my training has had some effect after all."
Norman patted Harry on the shoulder happily: "In that case, Harry, I'll sign you up for a few more management courses."
Upon hearing this, Harry stared at Peter with the look of utter despair, as if he were looking at a traitor.
Norman then asked, "Peter, how's your family's finances? If you encounter any difficulties, be sure to tell me. You're Harry's best friend, and I'll definitely help if I can."
At this time, Osborn had not yet become the Green Goblin, and he was both doting and strict with his only heir, Harry.
But he often showed Peter a more affectionate or favoritism towards him than towards Harry?
Peter had always thought that Norman's kindness and friendliness towards him was just the politeness that ordinary parents show to their son's friends—polite, respectful, and just the right amount of tact, but not something he would really take to heart.
Now, Peter possesses the memories of a time traveler, and he knows that Norman isn't just being polite; he genuinely wants to be his father.
In countless multiverses, Norman has expressed his fondness for Peter Parker, both privately and publicly.
Whether in the movies or comics, Norman has said things to Peter that make Harry both happy and jealous, such as "You're more like my son than Harry" or "Peter is the son I wanted."
Peter's feelings for Norman were also very complicated.
He felt genuine respect and gratitude for this elder who had expressed appreciation and favor to him from the very beginning, but he also harbored suspicion and vigilance because the elder might turn into the insane Green Goblin at any time.
After exchanging a few pleasantries, Peter bid farewell to Gwen, Norman, and the others.
……
Peter is building the first generation of web-shooters in the Parker family's garage, which has been converted into a production workshop.
Uncle Ben and Aunt Mei both went out to sell their products, so he took advantage of the break to use the simple equipment in the workshop to make the spider silk transmitter.
Peter slipped the nearly completed launcher onto his wrist and filled it with a spider silk capsule.
He positioned his wrist against the garage wall, his middle and ring fingers together, and pressed the trigger button in his palm.
"Sizzle~"
A fine yet strong white spider silk suddenly shot out, precisely adhering to the wall and stretching out a straight and solid white line.
Peter briefly tested the stickiness and strength of the spider silk, and after confirming that there were no problems, he dissolved the spider web with the prepared solvent and then carefully stored the emitter.
As for the suit, it's still in the design stage. Peter has drawn up the design, confirmed the materials, and designed some small functional parts, but hasn't started production yet.
Peter was unsure whether his body would undergo significant changes after being bitten by the mutated spider.
These past few days, Peter's main task has been to focus on developing Parker Industries and making money.
His fate will take a major turn when he attends the Osborne Group's technology exhibition this weekend.
