American comic book: Absolute Spider-Man
Chapter 7 Spider-Man: The Day of Destiny
Inside the Osborne Building, the originally spacious and empty lobby has been converted into an exhibition hall.
Soft, warm white spotlights hung from the ceiling, and the walls were covered with popular science posters about gene research, bioengineering, and radiation-induced mutagenesis.
The air was filled with a faint smell of electronic instruments dissipating heat, and the mixed scent of disinfectant alcohol and paper ink.
The area was filled with booths: some displayed gene chain models, some showcased small radiation detectors, and others demonstrated transgenic fruit flies, fluorescent bacteria, and spider behavior observation boxes.
The innermost exhibition area was surrounded by many students—it was Osborn Industries' latest spider gene experiment booth.
Inside the transparent glass box, several spiders that had undergone low-dose radiation mutation slowly crawled on a metal mesh frame. One of them, with striking red and blue markings on its abdomen, captivated Peter's attention.
The guide is explaining: "These spiders have undergone genetic enhancement, resulting in significant improvements in strength, agility, venom, and regenerative abilities..."
"I didn't expect you to be so interested in these spiders," Gwen whispered from the side.
Peter gave a knowing smile: "Of course, what Peter Parker wouldn't be interested in spiders?"
Harry, who was standing next to the two, noticed the way Peter looked at the spiders and said, "Peter, if you like these spiders, you can come and be an intern at the Osborne Corporation. The old man will definitely agree."
"That's great, Harry. Once I'm done with Parker Industries, could you ask Uncle Norman for an internship for me?"
Gwen and Ned also turned to look at Harry. Of the four present, apart from Harry, the other three were all science whizzes. How could they possibly let go of an internship opportunity at the Osborne Corporation?
"And us too," Gwen said without any politeness.
"Uh, of course." Harry scratched his head.
He then added, "That way, I won't be all alone during my internship at the company. You have no idea how boring I was during my internship."
"Boring? Is that how you describe your responsibilities?"
A deep and authoritative voice suddenly came from behind, carrying an undeniable sense of oppression that instantly drowned out the surrounding noise.
The group turned around abruptly and saw Norman Osborne standing not far away, dressed in a sharp dark green suit.
He frowned slightly, his sharp eyes fixed on Harry, his tone full of dissatisfaction with his good-for-nothing son.
Harry's smile froze instantly, and he instinctively straightened his back, his tone becoming somewhat hesitant: "Dad..."
Norman walked slowly forward, his gaze sweeping over Harry, then glancing indifferently at Peter, Gwen, and Ned, a hint of melancholy in his eyes as if to say, "Why is my son so stupid?" before his gaze returned to Harry.
His tone became more forceful: "I went to great lengths to transfer you to an important department, so you could get early exposure to core experiments and company operations, not so you could come here complaining about being bored."
He raised his hand and pointed to the mutagenic spiders in the display case next to him, his voice turning colder: "Every study, every piece of data from the Osborn Group concerns the livelihoods of tens of thousands of employees around the world, and the fluctuations in the group's market value of hundreds of billions of dollars. And you, you just find it boring?"
Peter and the others could only awkwardly watch as Norman disciplined his son.
Peter knew perfectly well how much Norman loved Harry, and how sternly he would be when faced with his son's incompetence.
Harry was scolded mercilessly by his father in front of his friends, and his face turned bright red. It looked like he was about to have an argument with his father.
Peter knew that Norman's parenting style had many problems, but now was clearly not the time for the father and son to argue.
Peter placed his hand on Harry's shoulder, who was about to speak, and said first, "Uncle Norman, I think there's something wrong with your way of raising Harry."
Harry looked at Peter, who stood up for him, and thought to himself that Peter was truly his good brother.
Norman wasn't angry when Peter criticized his teaching methods.
He asked slowly and deliberately, "Oh? Peter, what insightful opinion do you have?"
"It's very simple. Cut off all of Harry's sources of comfort, including his living expenses, and then demote him to the most arduous job."
Hearing this, Harry sensed something was wrong.
Peter continued, "If he fails to perform his duties well, don't pay him, but don't let him go hungry either. Instead, let him eat the relief food that people get from the relief center in the luxurious dining room of the Norman estate."
Harry's eyes widened as he looked at Peter with the eyes of someone who had been betrayed.
"Once he experiences the hardships and difficulties of life without your support, he will naturally cherish everything you have worked so hard to achieve for him."
Norman found it increasingly reasonable, and he gently stroked his chin with his fingers, nodding repeatedly.
"Peter, sometimes I really can't help but think how wonderful it would be if you were my son. That way, the Osborne family would have a successor."
Harry was about to retort to Norman when Peter subtly pinched him on the shoulder.
"Uncle Norman, Parker Industries is short-staffed right now. Why don't we have Harry come with me to do some manual labor after class? Even if he doesn't gain anything from other professional fields, at least he'll know that happiness is hard-won."
"Harry, did you hear that? You don't need to take management classes for the next few days. Go and be an apprentice at Parker Industries." Norman liked Peter more and more as he looked at him.
"Peter, Harry is blessed to have a brother like you."
"Having a brother like Harry is a blessing from God," Peter said sincerely.
Norman said goodbye to the group and went to his top-floor office to handle company affairs.
Harry asked Peter, "Peter, interning at Parker Industries must be more interesting than taking those boring business management classes at Osborn Corporation, right?"
"Of course not," Peter said. "Gwen, Ned, if you don't have anything else to do these next few days, come with Harry."
"I will teach you some very interesting skills that you will definitely use in the future."
Peter glanced at the glass display case containing several radiated spiders, but he couldn't find the striking red and blue spider inside.
"Good," Peter thought, "hurry up and pull me out from some unseen corner, then give me a bite."
Peter turned to look at Gwen, and he could vaguely see a thin, almost transparent white line between them, gently hanging down from the ventilation duct at the top of the exhibition hall.
At the end of the spider silk hung the radiant spider with a scarlet abdomen and dark blue stripes between its legs.
The spider landed on Gwen's bare hand, its sharp mouthparts instantly piercing her skin.
Gwen let out a soft "uh," and instinctively pulled her hand back: "Huh... what bit me?"
Peter's expression froze instantly.
He looked down at Gwen's wrist. The red and blue spider had released its mandibles and, like a shadow blown away by the wind, fell silently to the ground. In the blink of an eye, it burrowed into the narrow gap of the stainless steel cable tray in the ground and disappeared under the metal cover.
All that remained were a pair of barely visible, slightly reddish teeth marks on the back of Gwen's hand.
Peter clutched his head and screamed silently.
