Game of Thrones: Dragons have three heads, not three-headed dragons.

Chapter 10 Darren's Return, Soldiers' Reorganization

While Oris was using the hurricane to observe the area around the manor, he saw a large army approaching through its perspective. Oris immediately controlled the hurricane to swoop down, trying to discern the army's banners. Before the hurricane even reached above the army, Darren's shouts rang out from below. Only then did Oris notice Darren at the head of the column.

Upon learning of Darren's return, Oris finally breathed a sigh of relief. During the two months Darren had been conscripting soldiers, news of his father's serious illness had spread, and the manor's defenses were insufficient, forcing Oris to shuttle between the manor and Pentos, trying to lull the governors of Pentos into complacency with gifts and money. Fortunately, Darren returned in time, and even if the governors of Pentos planned to take action, Oris's manor, with its 500 armored soldiers and 2000 new recruits, had nothing to worry about, since the fighting strength of the Pentos city guard was generally considered poor.

After another half-day march, Daren finally returned to Oris Manor with 2500 soldiers. When Daren reported his experiences along the way to his brother, Oris was astonished. Daren, at such a young age, had already proven himself as a commander. After Oris spoke with Poch and Grah for a while, Oris let Daren go back to rest. Oris could tell that Daren had been eager to return to see his dragon eggs.

After everyone had left, Oris slowly walked towards his father Inis's room. After dismissing the maids, Oris looked at his father lying on the bed and said, "Father, I don't know if you can hear me, but I have a feeling the world has changed. I'm confident that in our generation we can bring dragons back to the human world. Next, I will plan a land where dragons and the Beleris family can grow freely, just as you did for me and Daren. Thank you for everything you've done." With that, Oris turned and left the room. He then summoned everyone in the castle—Daren, Pochi, Gera, Horace, Namir, and Margaery—for a meeting. "With the new army recruited by Daren, the manor's safety should be guaranteed for the time being," Oris said. "But we still need to be wary of external threats like Braavos and the Dothraki. The task of training the new army is now in your hands, Pochi. Margaery, the manor's logistics, including food distribution and soldier rations, will be handled by you and Uncle Namir." "Darren and Gra, go to Pentos and find a few suitable craftsmen, preferably those who can be relocated to the manor. We need to build a small harbor by the sea to provide space for the Black Ships to dock."

Oris then turned to Poch and said, "Soldier training must be gradual. I don't expect them to become combat-ready in a short time, but they must be disciplined and obey orders without question. That's absolutely crucial." "Leave it to me." "Heras, you personally oversee the manufacture of the alloy armor and weapons. The equipment work must be meticulous."

After the brief war meeting, Oris continued to check accounts and expenses in his study at the manor. Based on the manor's accumulation over the past ten years, it was enough to sustain an army of five thousand for almost a year. However, the existing two thousand eight hundred men could not be allowed to live off others for long; they had to generate some revenue. Oris then thought of the ancient Chinese military settlement strategy. There were large tracts of wasteland to the south of Oris's manor. Implementing military settlements there, regardless of how much grain they could obtain, would at least be enough to guarantee half of the soldiers' rations.

After establishing the strategy for raising and training soldiers, Oris immediately wrote down the next steps and sent different plans to the people directly in charge, based on his deployment of each individual.

After a month of intensive training, Poch's training of the new recruits had begun to show results. While Oris's military settlement strategy initially encountered some difficulties, it also started to take effect after Oris implemented a rotational system—training one day and cultivating the land the next. Although military settlements might affect the army's combat effectiveness, Oris couldn't think of anyone who could threaten his trained army in this medieval world of competing for survival. It's important to understand that most soldiers in Westeros were essentially farmers who had just laid down their hoes, and the armies of the Free Cities were mostly composed of slave soldiers. Such armies were almost impossible to discipline, especially since Oris planned to forge the remaining five thousand men into a fully armored legion.

Another two weeks passed, and during his inspection of the troops, Oris could clearly sense that the recruits were becoming healthier. After touring the camp, Oris said to Poch, "Shouldn't we let the recruits see some blood? You know, soldiers who haven't seen blood can't decide the outcome of a battle." After Oris finished speaking, Poch fell into deep thought. "I've thought about it too, but the surrounding area is relatively safe. Where would they have the opportunity to see blood?"

"Telosi and Rhys are fighting again over the disputed lands, aren't they? We're close to Mil. If things get chaotic in the disputed lands, we can send a mixed force of new recruits and veterans to clear out the fleeing mercenaries and bandits. Keeping the trade routes open will also benefit us." After saying this, Oris patted Pochi on the shoulder.

Upon returning to his room, Oris wrote a paper order, sending Pochi and Gra to lead a thousand soldiers—three hundred veterans and seven hundred new recruits—to clear out bandits and mercenaries near Mil. They were also to collect fees from merchants as appropriate to replenish the manor's finances. After Pochi left, the training was entrusted to Heras.

In addition to training, Oris also began to change the soldiers' weapons. The key to victory on the battlefield, besides excellent armor, is the bow and arrow. Good bows and arrows can not only extend the attack range, but also maximize the damage to the enemy. Especially now that the Dothraki are the hypothetical enemy, the bow and arrow can cause the greatest damage to the Dothraki.

After learning about the range and materials of common recurve bows in the world, such as the gold-hearted longbow and the weirwood longbow, Oris decided to use his modern knowledge to create a composite bow using oak, iron, and sinew. It is known that the conventional range of modern composite bows can exceed 350 meters, while the recurve bows used by ancient armies can only cover a range of 70 to 80 meters at most. Once Oris can replicate a relatively labor-saving composite bow, even if it cannot cover a range of 300 meters, it can still become a nightmare for other ancient armies.

Once Oris made his decision, he immediately began drawing various parts for the compound bow and then personally made molds to standardize the manufacturing of subsequent compound bow parts.
