Chapter 17 Returning to the Manor, Post-War Plans
After Poch and Darren met up, Darren immediately asked Poch, "Poch, did my brother send you?" Poch nodded and replied, "Auris was worried about you and sent me with cavalry to patrol north for backup. We were nearby last night, but didn't hear any fighting, so we didn't come over. This morning, while patrolling the area, I sent out scouts who spotted your camp. I guessed you were surrounded, so I launched a surprise attack. Who knew they were so weak?" Poch frowned slightly in dissatisfaction as he finished speaking.
After hearing Poch's story, Daren burst into laughter. Rag and the others around Daren also started laughing wildly. In an instant, the soldiers still in the tents all laughed out loud, and the laughter almost penetrated the military camp and spread into the open field.
Darren handed over the recruits to Poch, instructing Poch to quickly escort the wounded back to the manor, while he and Rag escorted the prisoners and captured supplies back to the manor.
When Daren and the others returned to the manor, Oris had already prepared a celebratory feast. During the feast, Oris inquired about Daren's performance in the war, but Daren, seeing Daenerys present, remained silent.
After the party, when Daren and Oris spoke privately, Daren frankly admitted, "Viserys hid in the recruit camp the whole time. According to some recruits afterward, Viserys planned to have them escort him to escape, but empty promises are ignored." Daren simply stated Viserys's actions, but Oris sensed Daren's dissatisfaction and immediately said, "Viserys is truly hopeless. Expecting him to launch a counterattack on Westeros is unreliable. How are your relationship with Daenerys?" Oris was usually busy with the affairs of the manor and didn't pay much attention to Daren and Daenerys's relationship.
Upon hearing Oris's words, Darren blushed, looking nothing like a general who had just returned victorious. He could only stammer, "It was alright." Seeing this, Oris didn't ask any further questions, told Darren to rest well, and continued with his work.
Darren and Rag suffered relatively few losses in this battle. However, the subsequent reinforcements from Poch suffered nearly 100 casualties, mostly minor wounds. After being replenished by prisoners, the manor's fighting strength remained intact. During the banquet, Oris had already learned from the prisoners that this group of mercenaries was recruited by Melo in Braavos, mostly debtors and swordsmen, with very few truly deserving of the title of mercenary. Furthermore, Melo hadn't brought his trusted men with him.
Oris tapped the table lightly. It seemed Braavos could no longer allow the continued expansion of Oris Manor, and Oris needed to accelerate his plans. Since the Bloody Century, Pentos and Braavos had fought numerous wars, with Pentos suffering more losses than gains. Countless princes had been sacrificed in these conflicts. After the final war, Pentos and Braavos reached an agreement that Pentos would not retain excessive military power. Although Oris Manor was not subordinate to Pentos, its relationship with Pentos made the Braavos Sea King wary, which was understandable.
This was clearly just a small lesson Braavos was giving Oris. Once Braavos used the Iron Fleet to blockade Oris's estate, Oris would find it difficult to conduct trade and military operations. Based on this, Oris quickly devised a plan to visit Pentos, intending to lull Braavos into a false sense of security and make him believe that his objective remained in Westeros, thus avoiding a formal war with the Iron Fleet in the future.
In Oris's plan, the most suitable person to visit Braavos was Illyrio, but that fat man would certainly not go easily, so he could only settle for having someone Oris trusted go with Viserys to try to deal with the Sea King.
After finalizing the plan, Oris summoned Darren, Poch, Namir, and others to his study for a short meeting the next day. Notably, Namir also brought Ramsay along. After listening to Oris's analysis, everyone lowered their heads in deep thought. Just as Oris was about to continue speaking, Uncle Namir suddenly said, "I'll go. Send Rag to me again."
Uncle Namir is always taciturn, but he's reliable when it comes to getting things done. Thinking of this, Oris looked at Rag, who silently nodded in response.
After the meeting, Oris went to find Viserys. As Oris approached Viserys's room, he was met with a strong smell of alcohol. During his time out with Daren, Viserys had been ambitious and determined to make a name for himself, but he was looked down upon by the recruits and forced to stay in the rear during the war. This caused him to feel extremely disgusted with himself, but Oris was completely unaware of this.
When Oris knocked and entered the room, he saw Viserys drinking alone by the bedside. Without hesitation, Oris bowed to Viserys and said, "We've identified the attackers. They're most likely sent by the Sea King of Braavos. After discussion, we plan to go to Braavos to negotiate with him. What does Your Majesty think?" Oris spoke very politely, but the drunk Viserys paid no heed, loudly proclaiming, "It was the Sea King of Braavos who did it! Damn it, I'll show that guy what the wrath of a sleeping dragon is all about!"
Seeing that Viserys was already drunk and incoherent, Oris immediately said, "Yes, Your Majesty, I will send someone to reprimand the Sea King." He then closed the door and left the room.
Oris walked to the training grounds of the manor and saw Daren and Daenerys training. Daren wasn't using the Bloodblade, but rather a regular hand-and-a-half-sword, while Daenerys wielded a rapier. Daren caught sight of Oris's arrival out of the corner of his eye, stopped his duel with Daenerys, and turned to Oris, asking, "Viserys agreed to go to Braavos?"
Seeing Daenerys present, Oris whispered to Daren, "She's completely drunk. Take her straight to the ship first thing tomorrow morning." Daren nodded in agreement.
Daenerys, standing nearby, asked curiously, "My brother is going to Braavos, should I go with him?" Before Oris could answer, Daren interjected, "Dane, you don't need to go. His Majesty Viserys is negotiating with Aquaman. How about you stay here with me?" Daenerys nodded happily at Daren's words, while Daren's face flushed slightly after hearing them.
Oris smiled with satisfaction at the sight. Seeing his brother and Daenerys's relationship progressing so quickly, Oris was quite pleased. With his lottery and blood magic at his disposal, his only worry was his brother's future. He figured that with Daenerys as a powerful backer and his own help, Daenerys would live a happy life.
