Warhammer: Primarch's Life from the Beginning
Chapter 55 Market
It was afternoon, and the sunlight shone on the bridge. The sandstorm outside the capital was blocked by the shield, and the stone bricks outside the palace were spotless.
After leaving the Eagle Council Palace, Olek, along with Leo and Kara, headed towards the lower nest of Saint Harbor.
"Your Highness, that area up ahead is called 'Grey Throat Corridor'." Olek trotted up to the two giants, trying to keep his voice from trembling too much. "It's a market during the day, but after curfew... it's a bit different."
He didn't dare finish the sentence.
Leo glanced at him sideways.
What does "not quite the same" mean?
"Well, some...not-so-clean people meet up there." Olek carefully chose his words. "Lower-class residents exchange parts, food rations, clean water coupons, and some...things that are hard to categorize. Like junk picked up from the Mechanical Cult's scrap heap, scraps that factories don't want, and stuff like that."
This kind of thing was too common within the Empire, and Leo couldn't be bothered to inquire about it anymore.
His purpose in coming out this time was simply to take a walk and see the sights.
The stacks of execution reports on his desk told him about the current state of the planet.
In addition, he had been in a very high position since the time of the Imperial Guard, and he really wanted to come down and take a look.
"Your Highness, how are you feeling?" Kara kept her eyes fixed on Leo out of the corner of her eye.
She knew Leo's power came from the God Emperor, which was the foundation of the state religion's patronage of him. "Did your time in the subspace have any impact on you?"
"It's alright," Leo smiled. "Don't worry, it's nothing serious."
As Leo said this, he was also wondering what principle his psionic energy was based on.
He wondered if other psionicists also expend physical energy and damage their bodies when drawing power from the warp.
Moreover, how exactly did I contact Him? Before, I just subconsciously felt that, oh, this sword should have some golden light, and so the weapon was enveloped in psionic energy.
In short, it's this kind of situation that seems quite funny.
Kara looked up at Leo's helmet; the Primarch did indeed look the same as usual. As expected of the eldest son of the God-Emperor, even on that kind of battlefield, he could protect them unharmed.
In fact, no one, including Kara and Leo, knew this.
Leo's projection in the Sea of Souls is quietly expanding, with warm yellow fluid overflowing and enveloping its surface. A sphere that continuously radiates light is constantly multiplying and expanding.
It greedily absorbed all the nutrients around it.
.
We've arrived at Grey Throat Corridor.
Grayish-white sewage dripped from the pipes above, splashing onto the rusted metal floor and creating rings of oily, shimmering water.
The stalls on both sides of the market were pieced together from recycled plastic steel sheets and rags, and the stall owners squatted on the ground, spreading their goods in front of their knees.
As soon as Leo walked in, several civilians who walked by instinctively knelt down.
These people from the lower classes didn't recognize him at all. They would never see any important figures in their lives. They just felt that the people in front of them were of extraordinary size and were decorated with the insignia of the empire. They knelt down subconsciously.
He raised his hand, as if to indicate that everyone didn't need to do that.
As soon as he raised his hand, another group of people surrounded him and knelt down, muttering something under their breath.
"..."
Leo silently lowered his hand and turned to look at Kara.
"Should I not have waved?"
Kara nodded seriously.
"Your Highness, every action you take may be interpreted as a blessing."
"……knew."
Leo decided not to do anything further.
.
Among the people walking around the market, those with normal appearances are actually a minority.
Some have an extra segment growing from their fingers, some have skin with a metallic sheen, and some have a bulge on their back that looks like a vestigial gill. These are all legal subspecies recognized by imperial law. In the environment of Vigilant Star, it would be a miracle if they didn't mutate over several generations.
When Leo walked up to a stall, he stopped and looked around.
There's an argument going on there.
A middle-aged female vendor tightly shielded a boy behind her. The boy looked to be less than ten years old. Both of them had light purple skin, thin membranes between their fingers, and bald heads with no hair or eyebrows.
Across from the stall stood a mechanical priest, half of his face replaced by a metal plate, his outstretched mechanical arm gripping the boy's wrist.
"Suspicious offspring." The servant's electronic voice was completely flat. "The probability of it being a gene stealer is very high."
"He's registered!" the female vendor gripped her son's other hand tightly. "I have proof!"
"Further investigation is needed to determine the authenticity of the proof..."
A large crowd had gathered, and several vendors who had undergone slight mutations had already begun quietly packing their belongings, preparing to make their escape.
Olek whispered in Leo's ear.
"Your Highness, these are the recycling servants of the Yellow Springs No. 8 casting world. They specialize in collecting samples from the lower levels. Even the Ministry of Justice is usually reluctant to deal with them."
"According to the rules, they can't take away legitimate subspecies, but they can always find an excuse."
There was no dark feeling emanating from the two people, and they didn't seem like gene stealers. He looked at Kara, and she immediately stepped forward.
The high heels of the power armor clicked, and the onlookers instinctively made way for them.
"In the name of His Highness Leo," Kara's voice was clear and steady, "everyone must be tried before being convicted. The Mechanicus has no right to arrest people in the marketplace. Let them go."
The servant slowly turned towards Kara.
"Sister, Huangquan No. 8 has priority in collecting alien samples; this is registered with the Gear Council..."
"The Gear Council was dissolved yesterday." Kara took another step forward, her fingers hovering over the bomb gun on her hanging arm. "Now listen to me."
The servant finally released the boy's wrist.
But before leaving, the red light in its mechanical eyes flashed a few times, sweeping over the boy's entire body.
"Record has been archived."
Come back for recycling next time; you can run away, but you can't hide.
Leaving behind this electronic message, the servant turned and left.
.
"Thank you, thank you, sir..."
The female vendor trembled as she hugged her son. She rummaged through her clothes for a while, then pulled out a rough little clay amulet and shakily placed it into Kara's hand.
"This is our clan's traditional talisman; we pray for the Emperor's protection..."
Kara bowed her head and took it.
She carefully held the amulet, which was no bigger than a fingernail, and was about to step back half a step to express her gratitude.
Snapped.
The amulet shattered between her fingers in her power armor; she had overestimated its sturdiness.
In an instant, the market fell silent.
Fragments fell softly onto Kara's breastplate, then rolled down the plates to the ground, piece by piece.
The color drained from Kara's face inch by inch, then returned inch by inch, until finally her entire face turned red to the roots of her ears.
She froze on the spot, realizing she had lost her composure in front of His Highness.
"I...I'm sorry." She turned around abruptly and bowed deeply to Leo. "Your Highness, I...I didn't mean to—"
She turned back and began rummaging through her pockets. But as a combat nun, she had nothing but weapons, equipment, and sacred objects on her person; she had practically nothing to offer in return.
Olek stood awkwardly to the side.
Leo glanced at the shards on the ground.
The fragments floated up one by one, piecing themselves back together, with glints of gold flashing at the broken edges. The clay was reshaped in Leo's palm, finally settling back into the female vendor's hand, becoming a small Imperial Eagle statue.
"The Divine Emperor watches over you, and may you and your child find eternal peace at the end of your lives."
The little eagle would gleam lightly every few seconds, as if it were breathing.
The female vendor's eyes widened.
Kara followed Leo away from the stall with her head down, muttering to herself the whole way.
"I have ruined Your Highness's good reputation..."
"I should have let Olek answer..."
After walking for a while, Olek mustered up the courage to exhale the breath that was stuck in his throat.
"Your Highness, your move was truly... an eye-opener."
No one responded. After a while, Leo glanced at him.
What does your family do?
Olek paused for a moment, then scratched his head.
"My father used to run a small shop in Zhongchao, repairing things like air purifiers." He smiled. "Later, the shop closed down, and he kept saving money, using all his connections to get me a job as a servant in the council."
As he walked past a repair parts stall, Olek's gaze swept over it casually.
"Being able to accompany you two today is already a blessing for people like us for a lifetime," he said calmly. "Where else would you like to go? I'm willing to lead the way."
.
After wandering around for a while, Leo still couldn't find anything amiss.
The sky darkened without us even realizing it.
The steel structure on the upper level of the nest blocked out the last ray of light.
Olek suddenly looked up.
"Oh no!" He hurriedly turned around and bowed. "Your Highness, Sister, curfew is about to begin, I have to go back."
Olek bowed again, quickly straightened his collar, and the people on the road were also hurriedly packing up to go home. Soraka followed the flow of people and ran towards the middle of the nest.
His figure quickly disappeared at the entrance of the passage.
Leo and Kara looked out at the street; they had already wasted far too much time here.
It's time to return to Parliament and make further plans.
