I am the Demon King of the Dungeon!
Chapter 10: The Bewildered Necromancer
About ten minutes later, the green light on the skull door suddenly flickered violently a few times, and then with a "bang," the door was kicked open from the inside, and three people staggered out.
Leading the group was a red-haired female warrior, her armor bearing deep claw marks and her shield shattered. Behind her was a hooded male mage, his robes mostly burned off. Finally, a male dwarf with a charred beard emerged.
"Hammer and Rose?"
Renn muttered to himself, "They were beaten pretty badly..."
Arthas didn't speak, but looked at the three people's disheveled appearance, his expression darkening slightly.
He hadn't expected the necromancer to let three people escape. You have to understand that these adventurers' lives are all based on "fear value," and every death means one less source of income.
The goblin leader is selling passes, the necromancer has too little killing intent, the dungeon is in turmoil, and he wishes he could personally send a few people back to town...
The three men had different expressions: the female warrior looked resentful, the male mage was expressionless, and the dwarf cursed and smacked off the remaining sparks on his beard.
The man with the giant sword asked, "How was it?"
"So close." The female warrior gritted her teeth and said, "The bone dragon cub's health was down to 10%, and then the necromancer cast a group curse, and the healers couldn't hold it..."
"Ten percent?" The round-faced youth gasped. "If you didn't lose too many people, you should be able to pass, right?"
"It's hard to say." The male mage's voice was calm: "The cooldown time of the bone dragon cub's breath attack has been reduced by three seconds. The intelligence hasn't been updated. Even five people might not be able to control its health."
"Changed again?" The man with the giant sword frowned.
"Sigh, dungeon bosses aren't just wooden stakes." The female warrior sighed, her gaze lingering on Arthas for a moment. "Good luck to you guys, we'll go back to resupply and come back tomorrow."
The man wielding the greatsword stretched his shoulders and straightened up from the wall: "Alright, brothers, let's get to work!"
"Alright!" The round-faced youth patted his face, perked up, turned to Arthas and the other two, and asked, "Then you guys wait here, it'll be your turn after we're done."
"Okay," Renn readily agreed.
The man wielding the greatsword shouldered it, the female archer checked the bowstring, and the round-faced youth flexed his wrists. The three pushed open the skull door and filed in.
The waiting area was quiet for a few seconds.
Faint sounds of battle could be heard coming from inside the BOSS room.
About seven or eight minutes later, the noise in the BOSS room gradually subsided and eventually became completely quiet.
The green light on the skull door dimmed, and it was pushed open from the inside. The man with the greatsword stepped out first, with several claw marks on his body, but he seemed to be in good spirits; the female archer followed behind, her quiver mostly empty; the round-faced youth was the last to emerge, his clothes torn, but he wore a smile.
"Did you pass?" Ryan asked.
"Passed." The round-faced youth grinned. "Third time clearing it. No need to play it again."
"Congratulations," Oris said casually.
"Thanks!" The round-faced youth brushed the dust off his clothes, turned to Arthas, and said, "Brother, it's your turn. Good luck, if you really can't win, retreat, don't force yourself."
"Hmm," Arthas responded.
"Then we'll head down first." The man with the greatsword shouldered his sword and walked towards the stone steps. "Take care."
Three figures disappeared at the end of the spiral stone staircase.
Renn took a deep breath, drew his short sword, looked at Arthas and Oris, and asked, "Are you ready?"
Arthas looked at the skull door, a slight smile playing on his lips. He was thinking, "You're beating up your own employees in your own backyard, and they still have to wait in line."
After queuing up, you still have to pretend to take your time.
Fine.
……
The BOSS room is much larger than it appears from the outside. Bone chandeliers hang from the dome, and eerie green flames flicker inside the lampshades, illuminating the entire hall in a sinister and eerie atmosphere. Hundreds of skeletons are embedded in the surrounding walls, their empty eye sockets all facing the entrance.
The overall atmosphere of horror is maximized.
In the center of the hall.
The necromancer hovered in mid-air, surrounded by a pale blue magical shield. He held a bone staff in his skeletal claws, the gem at the staff's head emitting a pale green light.
A baby skeletal dragon crouched beside it, its pale skeleton shrouded in dark green mist.
"A few more little mice have arrived..." The necromancer slowly turned around, uttering his signature line in Undead, and then he saw Arthas at the very back of the group.
The bone staff almost slipped from his hand.
The Soul Gem's light trembled violently.
Lord Demon King? !
Are they here to audit my work performance?
The necromancer's mind raced, and the occupational hazards he'd developed during his time as a civil servant suddenly kicked in. The leader's sudden appearance meant either a promotion or a reprimand. Just look at the Demon King's expressionless face...
It's most likely the latter!
It almost shouted out loud, but fortunately, the pronunciation habits of the undead language made it swallow the second half of the sentence back, turning it into a muffled "ooh-ooh-ooh".
"Strange, what's wrong with it today?" Renn muttered to himself, "It can't even finish its opening remarks?"
"She might have a sore throat." Oris had already raised her longbow. "Never mind that, I'm in charge of the bone dragon hatchlings!"
As soon as she finished speaking, Oris moved to the left and shot an arrow accurately at the bone dragon cub.
The skeletal dragon cub, injured, let out a sharp roar and turned its head to pounce on Oris.
"Come and chase me!"
Oris's voice was calm, but her steps were incredibly fast. As she retreated, she fired arrows continuously, each one precisely hitting the joints of the bone dragon cub's feet, preventing it from gaining any momentum in its pursuit.
Kite tactics.
Arthas recognized this tactic.
Oris wanted to use her agility and accurate shooting skills to keep the bone dragon cub firmly tied to the left side of the room, preventing it from supporting the necromancer.
"My turn!" Ryan shouted.
His figure suddenly faded, like a drop of ink dissolving into water, disappearing silently into the air.
Invisibility.
Arthas raised an eyebrow slightly. He had seen assassins who could turn invisible before, but he hadn't expected that Renn, who was clearly a warrior, would also be able to turn invisible.
The necromancer clearly noticed this as well, and immediately stopped chanting. It drew a circle in front of itself with its bone staff, and dark green ripples spread out in all directions.
As the ripples swept across the right side of the room, a blurry human figure suddenly appeared.
"Found you." The necromancer sneered, pointing his bone staff in that direction, and a magic arrow shot out!
But Rain was faster than it expected, and the humanoid silhouette vanished again the instant the ray struck.
That was just a fleeting afterimage.
The real Raine had already circled behind the necromancer, his short sword gleaming coldly as he thrust it out fiercely.
"Click—"
Cracks appeared on the magic shield.
"Dick!" Ryan shouted.
"They're here!"
Arthas charged forward, gripping his longsword tightly with both hands, and slashed fiercely at the necromancer's front!
Wait, wait, wait!!
The Demon King himself is going to kill me?
What kind of assessment is this? A practical exercise? Or... have I really done something wrong recently, and the Demon King is going to punish me personally?
The necromancer instinctively raised his bone staff to block, while simultaneously unleashing a Shadow Bolt. However, the arrow was clearly off-target, flying past Arthas's side and striking the wall behind him, blasting a crater.
"Oh no," the necromancer's heart skipped a beat. "Too many preferences! Will the Demon King think I'm weak?"
It quickly followed up with another Shadow Arrow, this time with good accuracy, but its power was noticeably reduced.
Arthas dodged to the side, his longsword flashing upwards, the tip slicing across the surface of the magic shield and sparking a trail of fire.
He controlled his strength, slashing at the shield with each strike, trying to make it look like he was "going all out."
While dealing with the situation, the necromancer frantically tried to decipher the Demon King's intentions.
Why is the Demon King's swordsmanship so ordinary?
No, they must be hiding their true strength...
But why would he hide his strength?!
Is this a test to see through my disguise? So should I act like I "saw through" or "didn't"?
If I see through your disguise, will the Demon King think I'm too clever and can't be kept alive?
If I don't see through the disguise, will the Demon King think I'm too slow-witted and unworthy to be the BOSS?
The necromancer's mind was immediately caught in a classic workplace paradox, and the flames in his eyes danced like disco balls.
