I am the Demon King of the Dungeon!
Chapter 60: Monster Brokerage Agency
Although monsters are not as orderly as humans, they still have their own organizations, and monster agencies are specifically designed for recruitment and job seeking.
The nearest monster brokerage is located in unclaimed land thirty miles north of Graystone Town, nestled between Dark Hemkas and Fiery Canyon, and is a crooked three-story stone building.
The building is pieced together from different colored stones, as if a colorblind architect had built it with their eyes closed based on blueprints. A crooked wooden sign hangs at the entrance, which reads—
【Monster Labor Dispatch Center - Southern Branch】
[Main Business: Job seeking for monsters, job-hopping consultation for monsters, mediation of labor disputes for monsters...]
[Friendly Reminder: Humans are not welcome here. Humans, please go to the Adventurers' Guild next door.]
[Friendly Reminder 2: Mixed-race individuals are not welcome either. Mixed-race individuals, please go to the Adventurers' Guild next door.]
Alsace pushed open the door.
The lobby on the first floor looks even more chaotic than it does from the outside.
Several tables with missing legs were pushed together, piled with yellowed forms and half-eaten bones, while various job postings were pasted on the walls.
"The Fiery Canyon urgently needs fire-attribute monsters. Excellent benefits include room and board, holiday bonuses, performance bonuses..."
"The Wailing Caverns are recruiting night patrol officers..."
"Shadowfang Castle is hiring floor bosses. Salary and details will be discussed in person... (Serious inquiries only)"
In the corner, a gray goblin was squatting on a chair filling out a form, its tongue sticking out, biting the pen handle after each word it wrote; at another table, a gargoyle and a harpy were arguing, the gibbon saying that the gargoyle had stolen the harpy's interview opportunity, and the harpy had slapped the gargoyle with her wing. The gargoyle didn't move, but the harpy was howling in pain.
Behind the counter sat a plump cat demon, its orange fur fluffy like a moving ball of fur. It was washing its face with its paws, so focused that it didn't even look up when Arthas walked up to the counter.
"Fill out the form first." The cat demon pushed a form onto the counter, continuing to wash its face with its paws. "Name, race, rank, job objective, expected salary. Once you've filled it out, line up. There are quite a few people today; it'll probably take three to four hours..."
She looked up.
Black vertical pupils met amber vertical pupils.
The cat demon's claws froze in mid-air, her tongue still sticking out, her tail exploded to twice its usual thickness, and the whole cat bounced up as if it had been electrocuted.
"Dragon dragon dragon dragon dragon—"
Alsace pushed the form back. "I'm not here to look for a job, I'm here to hire."
The cat demon's tail was still flaring up. She carefully sat back down in the chair, pulled the form back, but her eyes remained fixed on Arthas, her pupils shrinking to a thin slit.
"For hiring... there's a dedicated contact window..." The cat demon pointed to the second floor, "But could you please tell me who you are? We need to register..."
Her voice grew softer and softer as Arthas reduced most of his dragon's might, leaving only a sliver, just enough for her to confirm his identity, but not enough to scare away all the monsters in the building.
The cat demon's pupils suddenly dilated.
She recognized him.
The Primordial Dragon God, the Demon Lord of Dark Hemkas.
"I'll take you upstairs right away." The cat demon slid off the chair, her voice becoming high-pitched and thin, her tail swishing behind her like a fan. "Would you like something to drink? We have coffee, black tea, and our newly arrived Moonlight Spring water..."
"Need not."
"Okay, okay, this way please!"
The second floor was quieter than the first floor. Behind several tables sat different brokers, including undead, orcs, and an old goblin who looked like he had worked there for three hundred years. The cat demon led Arthas directly to the innermost private office.
"VIP Only".
A demon sat in the office, wearing a round, one-sided spectacle, slightly bald on top, dressed in a white shirt and black vest. His horns were sawed off, and the cut surfaces were covered with two metal caps that looked like some kind of decoration.
A nameplate was placed on the table.
[Senior Real Estate Consultant - Balzer]
【Service Motto: To help every monster find its perfect dungeon, offering the most professional and customized service】
"Please sit down, please sit down." Balzer stood up, politely extended his hand, then realized that the person in front of him was the Primordial Dragon God, and his hand froze in mid-air, unsure whether to shake it or not.
"Uh, you are...?"
Arthas grasped the other's hand and shook it.
Sit down.
Balzer, flattered, sat back down in his chair and pulled a brand-new register from his drawer, moving as quickly as if he were snapping up a limited-edition item.
"It is an honor to have the Venerable Demon King grace us with his presence. What type of monster do you require? I have a special list of high-level monsters to recommend..."
"I need a high-level monster, preferably a dragon."
Balzer paused on the paper for a moment, then smiled professionally: "Of course. Since the Demon King himself is recruiting, the standards can't be low."
He flipped through a gold-edged reserve book, his finger quickly tracing the list.
"We have seven high-ranking dragon monsters registered in our office. Three of them are currently under long-term contracts, leaving four for you to choose from." Balzer's finger moved down the list. "Abyssal Mimic Dragon, level 447; Black Flame Dragon, level 469; Bronze Wyvern, level 477; Black Emerald Dragon, level 567, but these four..."
"I must first explain to you that the Dragon Clan is very competitive in the market, and those who are unemployed mostly have some minor issues."
"What's the problem?"
"The Abyss Mimic Dragon is socially awkward; the Black Flame Dragon has a terrible temper and is currently on the permanent blacklist of three dungeons; the Bronze Wyvern is a germaphobe who considers combat unhygienic and dislikes sweating and bleeding; the Black Emerald Dragon is more normal, just a bit expensive..."
"Its expected salary is 12,500 magic crystals per month, with a minimum contract of six months, and it also requires an independent cave, a private hot spring, and at least three servant monsters."
Arthas tapped his fingers on the armrest.
Social anxiety, violent tendencies, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and extravagance—none of these four high-ranking dragons are normal.
"Notify them." Arthas stood up. "Come to Dark Hemkas for an interview tomorrow, in the Throne Room."
"all?"
"all."
Balzer quickly jotted it down in the register.
Arthas pushed open the door and stepped out. In the corridor, the cat demon was eavesdropping with its ears perked up. As soon as it saw him come out, it immediately curled up into a ball and pretended to lick its paws. He walked down the stairs and through the hall. The arguing gargoyles and harpies stopped talking at the same time, and the goblin fell off his chair.
Pushing open the door, the wind of the No Man's Land, carrying the smell of sulfur, rushed in. Arthas glanced back at the crooked three-story stone building, a slight smile playing on his lips.
I want to see if any of these problematic dragons can sit on my throne.
