America: Child stars start with The Shining
Chapter 13 Lifting the Siege
The next day, after finishing filming Apple's TV show "GG," Charles immediately rushed back to the Hollywood set.
Going forward, Kubrick's filming schedule will only become more and more intense, and he probably won't have the opportunity to take on other jobs anymore. He'll have to stay on set and be ready to be called upon at any time.
He happened to have a scene scheduled for him today, and it was a very challenging solo performance that would truly test his acting skills.
This scene wasn't originally part of the script; it was added by Kubrick during a late-night revision of the new script.
After Charles finished filming his first scene, Kubrick seemed to think that he had more room for improvement and wanted to push him to his limits by increasing the intensity of his performance.
It's safe to say that Kubrick is truly a master; the better you perform in front of him, the more brutal the punishment you'll suffer. However, this is actually a good thing for Charles, as he needs to accumulate experience at this stage.
"Jodie Foster! Jodie! Look this way!"
"Judy, do you feel that media coverage is affecting your normal life?"
"Judy, could you please address your comments from last night's show?"
As soon as he stepped outside the film set, he found it completely surrounded by reporters. A group of reporters blocked the entrance, flashes went off one after another, and the sound of camera shutters was almost continuous.
What's going on?
He struggled to squeeze in, his small body being pushed and shoved by the group of adults. After finally finding a staff member maintaining order and showing his identification, he was let in.
Just as Charles was about to leave, he heard a reporter suddenly shout:
"Jodie Foster, are all the things you said on TV true?"
He instinctively turned around and saw Judy, wearing sunglasses, trapped inside a half-open door of a building, unable to get out.
A hint of displeasure had crept onto her face as she coldly stared at the group of reporters outside the door.
She had merely hinted at her intention to finish her studies before continuing her acting career under the guidance of the host, and as a result, she was targeted by this group of people who made wild accusations.
Who knows what kind of gossip headlines they'll end up making?
For example, nonsense like "Jodie Foster decides to retire from acting, what will become of Hollywood?" or "Jodie Foster may permanently leave the public eye!"
Just then.
Judy was suddenly patted on the back. She tensed up and almost instinctively turned around to throw a punch, but thankfully she managed to restrain herself in time.
She had practiced Taekwondo for a period of time before, both for filming and self-defense.
"Hey, don't get agitated, I'm here to help you out."
Charles, standing behind her, was almost startled, but luckily he was relatively short now, so even if he did throw a punch, he would most likely only hit thin air.
Yes, children have their advantages too.
Judy took a breath and calmed down. She recognized him as the little boy who had accidentally bumped into her a few days ago. She never expected to run into him in this situation.
Charles glanced furtively at the crowd of reporters outside, figuring they wouldn't be leaving anytime soon, and then said:
"Staying here isn't a solution. I know there's a side door in this building that can take you around to another place. Follow me."
Judy glanced instinctively at the door; flashbulbs were still going off wildly, and several reporters were even trying to push the door open. She hesitated for a moment, but then followed them.
She then looked at Charles. Although the boy looked quite young, he was remarkably calm in the face of what had just happened.
"Are you filming here?"
This was Judy's first sentence of the day. Charles paused for a moment, then replied:
"right."
Judy nodded, and then the two of them fell silent, walking one after the other, their footsteps echoing in the corridor.
Having just experienced such a blockade, anyone would be in a bad mood, so Charles didn't try to bring up the topic again.
They made a few turns and soon found a safe exit, the very place where he had last bumped into Judy.
Charles pushed open the door and led her into the set of "The Shining." Naturally, no reporters could possibly barge in; it was perfectly safe.
Judy took off her sunglasses, revealing her bright, doe-like eyes. She looked somewhat tired and began to speak:
"Thank you for your help today; I owe you a favor."
Charles shrugged and said:
"It was nothing. I also really dislike those gossip reporters. You'd better be careful in the future and don't let them know your schedule again."
His words were pointed, referring both to the reporters and subtly warning them to be wary of the obsessive fan who kept harassing her.
Judy clearly made a connection to something; her gaze lowered slightly, and her expression dimmed.
"Hey, Ciel! Why are you so late today? Hurry up and get to the dressing room, filming is about to start!"
Lyon hurried over from the side, urging Charles on, clearly unaware that Jodie Foster was still standing there.
Charles could only turn back and give her a slightly apologetic smile before being led away by Leon.
After a while, when he came out after changing his makeup, Judy was no longer in sight.
For this child star who is highly regarded in Hollywood, her schedule is packed from morning till night, with no time to rest. Not to mention that she also has to take care of her studies. Just imagining it makes one feel physically and mentally exhausted.
It's no wonder she said on a TV show that she plans to go to university first, temporarily put aside her acting career, and return to a normal life.
Charles remembered that she actually did it later, and when she returned to Hollywood, she won two Academy Awards.
It can only be said that some people are born for the silver screen.
He needs to work even harder.
As Charles walked toward the set, he soon spotted Kubrick. At the same time, another man was standing next to him, negotiating with him, though the scene seemed somewhat strained.
Charles immediately recognized who it was; in Hollywood, almost no one wouldn't know this popular director.
Steven Spielberg.
Since he made the big-budget film "Jaws" in 1975 and broke box office records, he completely changed the direction of Hollywood, and the six major film studios began to invest heavily in making commercial blockbusters.
But in the next decade, no one will be able to surpass him at the box office, and this guy will break the record again and again, completely captivating audiences around the world.
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Schindler's List, Jurassic Park...
In this era, any film he directs is an absolute box office king.
"Kubrick, can you please stop rewriting your lousy script? My entire Indiana Jones crew is waiting for you to wrap things up!"
"Hey, listen up, I suggest you shut your mouth right now, or your crew will never get a chance to film on a Hollywood set again!"
Two renowned directors stood there, arguing like children, their faces flushed. Charles walked by silently. If a passerby had seen this scene, they would have been utterly astonished.
So, he's going to put on that one-man show in front of these two people later?
The pressure seems a bit immense... However, if Spielberg takes a liking to him, the opportunity for his next film might be just around the corner.
That's a movie you absolutely can't miss.
