Chapter 126 Making Money in Nuocheng, Spending Money in Nuocheng, Not Wanting to Take Any Home
Dandelion blinked.
How can you be so sure?
Zieg didn't answer directly, but instead asked a question in return.
"Dandelion, you've written so many love poems, how long do you think Anna and Evan's relationship will last?"
""
Dandelion paused for a moment, seemingly lost in thought.
Zig continued.
"Although Anna is not a baroness, she is at least much better off than an ordinary peasant woman. She lives in a castle, and her biggest troubles are probably doing housework and taking care of her daughter, but at least she doesn't have to worry about where her next meal will come from."
"As time went on, she took it all for granted. She began to tire of this mundane and stable life, feeling that she was just wasting her life and should pursue love and seek the meaning of life."
"Then Evan appeared. A man who could write poetry, and she felt that this was what she had been searching for."
.
Dandelion's expression became somewhat subtle.
As a bard, he had seen far too many stories like this.
"Do you think that when she discovers that Evan can't do anything but write poetry, and that she has to worry about everything from cooking to household chores—will she still think her choice was right?"
"She'll regret it."
Zieg drew a conclusion.
"Because humans have a flaw that they can never shake off—they always romanticize the paths they haven't taken."
"She will come to us on her own when the time comes."
A group of people led eight horses through the bustling street.
This team is not uncommon in Novigrad, but eight horses crammed together still inevitably attracts the attention of passersby.
The streets of Novigrad are much wider than the dirt roads of Crow's Nest, paved with neat stone slabs, and lined with shops and houses on both sides.
-
The cries of vendors, the rumble of horse-drawn carriages, and the clamor of pedestrians mingled together.
"Sieg, you said you were coming to Novigrad, what are your plans for the future?"
Zoltan, carrying his battle axe, strode alongside Sieg, his rough voice still clearly audible in the noisy street.
"Yeah, you wouldn't have traveled all that way just to see the scenery, would you?"
Dandelion also led his horse over, his eyes filled with curiosity.
Zig slowed down and stopped at a street corner.
"Geralt gave me a name before I left Kaer Morhen."
"Let me go to Novigrad and find a guy named Dudu Bibbwitt. He's a friend of Geralt's and has some connections in the city; he can help me settle down."
"Dudu Bieberwitt?"
Dandelion paused for a moment, then slapped his thigh.
"You should have said so earlier. I know Dudu. I'm very familiar with him. He's been a professional manager in Novigrad for many years. He's done all kinds of business. He has connections in businesses big and small, both inside and outside the city."
He patted Zieg on the shoulder, as if to say, "I'll take care of you."
"I'll take you to see him tomorrow. Let's find a place to stay for today."
As he spoke, he pointed ahead.
"Come on, I'll take you to a nice place."
Dandelion led the group along several streets accessible to carriages for a long time, deliberately avoiding those that were too narrow...
Too dirty, and too easy to cause trouble in the alley.
Finally, they stopped in front of a tavern.
"This is it, Spear Cave."
Next to the tavern was a low stable, with hay and a few broken wooden barrels piled up at the entrance. Dandelion, familiar with the place, called over the stableman and asked him to make room for the eight horses, then casually gave him some instructions about hay and water.
After settling the horses, he pushed open the tavern door. A mixture of smells—alcohol, roasted meat, and sweat—wafted out.
The tavern was brightly lit, and the tables inside were filled with all sorts of customers.
There were laborers in tattered clothes, mercenaries with long swords at their waists, merchants adorned with jewels, and several scantily clad women moving between the tables, soliciting business.
In the corner was a small stage where a man with a goatee was playing the lute and singing a ballad about heroes and beauties.
"Dandelion, you've come."
The owner behind the bar greeted them warmly as they entered.
"Why did you bring so many friends today? How many rooms do you need? And are the horses to be kept in the backyard too?"
Dandelion walked to the bar, exchanged a few pleasantries with the owner, and quickly finalized the room, dinner, and the cost of hay for eight horses for one night.
Zieg stood to the side, looking around the tavern.
Spear Cave.
This is the address Geralt gave him, saying that he could find Dudu Bieberwitt here.
Dinner was simple: roasted lamb chops, rye bread, and ale. The taste was so-so, but the portions were generous.
Zoltan was enjoying his meal, munching on lamb chops and chugging down drinks, all the while grumbling about the awful weather in Velen.
Dandelion was boasting about his adventures to a few guests at the next table, leaving them dumbfounded.
Zieg didn't say anything, just silently drank his beer, pondering his next plan.
The next morning, Dandelion left before dawn.
After Sieg and the others finished breakfast downstairs and checked on the horses in the backyard, he returned to the tavern with a halfling.
To avoid attracting attention, the group did not linger in the lobby but instead requested a quiet private room.
Once inside the house and confirming that only a few of them were present, Dandelion led the people to the front of the group.
It was a halfling, a short, stocky fellow with a shrewd and worldly face.
He only reached Zieg's waist in height, with a round and stocky build, broad shoulders, and a round belly.
"Hello, young man."
The halfling looked up at Zig.
"I'm Dudu Biberwitt. Dandelion said you were introduced by Geralt?"
Zieg nodded.
"Geralt told me to come to Novigrad to find you before I left Kaer Morhen. He said you could help me find a place to stay in this city."
"Geralt—"
A hint of nostalgia flashed in Dudu's eyes.
"I've known him for a long time, but I haven't seen him in ages. I wonder how he's doing now."
"He's fine."
Sieg said, "When I left, he was preparing to go find a sorceress named Yennefer."
"Yennefer————"
Dudu nodded thoughtfully.
"That woman, Geralt still can't get her out of his mind. Hopefully, he'll find her this time."
He put aside his emotions and refocused his attention on Zieg.
"Alright, let's get down to business. You came to see me because you're looking for a job in Novigrad?"
Zieg nodded.
"We need a place to settle down, and we also need an identity to establish ourselves in Novigrad."
"Of course, it would be even better if we could have a stable income."
Dudu looked Qige up and down.
"You look like a very capable fighter."
"Perfect timing. I have a logging camp outside the city, and things have been a bit unsettled lately, so I need a few guards. If you'd like, you can work there."
"The work is easy; the main job is to supervise the loggers and prevent wild animals or bandits from causing trouble. Food and lodging are provided, but the pay is a bit low."
He gave a number.
When Zoltan heard this number, he couldn't help but frown.
The wages Dudu paid would be a considerable income in the countryside, but in a big city like Novigrad, the cost of living is naturally much higher than at Baiguoyuan. After deducting food and lodging expenses, there's hardly any money left to save.
A typical example of making money and spending it all in Nuocheng is not to be taken home.
