45 Supermarket Horror
"Then?"
Mike glanced back meaningfully at the street corner.
"A riot broke out on the spot. That guy beat up those high-class middle-class people, and in the process, he overturned the relief table, and all sorts of hamburgers, sandwiches, and water were scattered all over the floor..."
Mike touched his chest and said with lingering fear.
"The homeless people in line rushed forward like madmen to grab the food, and the whole scene became chaotic. It was only when the police arrived that things calmed down. The unfortunate boxer was shot dead on the spot by the police, and the staff of the food bank responsible for the relief were so frightened that they said they would not come here to distribute emergency supplies for a long time."
"This guy has ruined the lives of everyone on this street."
Lynn nodded. He had heard Mike mention this when he first transmigrated. At that time, the original owner of this body was almost starving to death. If it weren't for that incident, he would have been able to get some food at the relief station.
"Beep~ Beep~"
Just as Lynn was sighing, her cell phone suddenly rang.
"Hey boss, it's DeSean. I've landed you a huge new business deal!"
DeShawn's excited shouts came through the phone, along with the sound of his partner Daniel talking loudly to someone nearby.
"Oh? A new business? What kind of business?"
Lynn also became interested. He was now eager to raise the $1 so he could gain his freedom and start a new life.
He and Mike were about $5000 short of escaping the threat of Carlos's gang.
"Over here, on Fifth Avenue, near Fuji Sushi! It's less than a kilometer from Pioneer Plaza!"
"Okay, Mike and I are coming right away!"
After hanging up the phone, Lynn shook his head, trying to clear his mind of the story about the relief center and the unfortunate boxer.
Since it was such a short distance, there was no need to call Marshall to drive over; the two of them simply walked there slowly.
"Oh my god..."
They had walked less than 500 meters when the light drizzle suddenly intensified, with large, icy raindrops pelting down and splashing into tiny droplets, soaking their clothes.
"No, we need to go buy an umbrella."
Lynn pulled Mike along and headed towards a small supermarket nearby.
The pedestrians on the street were in a hurry, but they had one thing in common: none of them were carrying umbrellas.
When Lynn first transmigrated, he didn't understand at all, until Mike told him that many Americans were like this, especially in Seattle, where there are more than 150 rainy days a year, mostly light drizzle or rain clouds with very weak intensity.
So locals are used to it and even consider it a daily occurrence. In addition, the umbrellas are bulky and inconvenient to open and close, and there are no special umbrella bags indoors. Water dripping all over the floor is considered unsightly.
And because of the lack of popular science about the health risks of getting wet in the rain due to the "happy education" approach, many locals even regard running in the rain as a symbol of romance or freedom, so almost no one uses an umbrella.
"Achoo..."
Lynn sneezed and quickly pushed open the supermarket door.
"This is why many Americans who are middle class one moment can catch a cold the next because they don't take precautions against the rain, then get delayed by the hospital, eventually developing into a severe cold, fever, or even pneumonia, and ultimately lose their jobs because of their illness, falling to the brink of poverty and becoming homeless on the streets."
Mike was a highly educated, intelligent white American, so he was also strongly opposed to the turning point and therefore strongly agreed with Lynn's decision to buy the umbrella.
"Hey, do you have any umbrellas here?"
The supermarket was very messy, and Lynn didn't know if they had umbrellas, so she asked the cashier at the checkout.
"An umbrella? Do you want a sun umbrella? There are some over there."
The chubby Black employee was munching on a donut while laughing at a short video on his phone. When someone asked him a question, he impatiently pointed to the corner with the little finger of the hand holding the food.
"We don't need parasols, just regular umbrellas!"
"Why do you need a regular umbrella?"
"Get shelter from the rain! It's raining so hard outside!"
"You're using an umbrella in the rain? Are you out of your mind?"
"..."
Lynn was so shocked by the other person's self-righteous logic that she was speechless, staring blankly as the other person devoured a palm-sized donut in two bites.
"Never mind, they probably don't sell them here... Let's go to the shop up ahead and buy a windbreaker..."
Mike patted him on the shoulder, clearly understanding his feelings.
"Mike, I've never heard such nonsense in my life! He actually asked me if I needed to use an umbrella in the rain? Is he out of his mind? Can you believe a human would say something like that... Holy shit!"
As Lynn walked to the entrance of the shop, a white man wearing a wet tracksuit and a hood suddenly burst in!
He was thin, pale, and trembling uncontrollably. As soon as he burst into the supermarket, he raised a black handgun, pointed it sharply at the laughing Black cashier, and yelled, "Hand over all the money, now!"
The Black clerk was immediately startled, raising his hands high and dropping them to the ground, forgetting even the donuts and his phone.
"Hurry up, I'm only giving you 20 seconds to put the money in this bag!"
The cashier, with a gun pointed at him, immediately and deftly entered the PIN into the cash register, which popped up all the cash drawers. He then began quickly grabbing the banknotes and coins inside and putting them into his pockets.
"Fuck, how unlucky are we to have run into an armed robbery!"
Mike and Lynn exchanged a glance and, quite in unison, quietly took a few steps back, trying their best not to attract the attention of the robbers.
Unexpectedly, the other party suddenly turned their gun and shouted at the two men:
"And you too, take out all your money and valuables! Put them in this pocket!"
"Seriously, buddy, you're robbing a homeless person?"
Lynn was internally ranting.
In fact, the original owner of this body might not have been robbed by bandits if she had encountered them, since it was obvious at a glance that she was penniless.
But hasn't Lynn made a little money these past few days?
So he and Mike improved their lives a bit, getting beard trims, haircuts, and buying some decent clothes and shoes. After eating hot food for a few days, they finally regained some color and looked nothing like homeless people on the street.
Little did they know that they would be targeted by robbers.
"Should we take him down?"
Lynn and Mike exchanged glances, seeking his opinion.
"I think we should give him the money first, and then make our move when he's not paying attention. Look at how stressed he is right now, he must be high on drugs. Your spell doesn't seem to be able to kill someone instantly like a gun..."
Mike said in a low voice, then, as a wise man, he pulled out a handful of loose bills he had brought with him that day from his pocket.
"Okay, I'll make my move when he turns to leave..."
Lynn was also a little scared. He only had two attack skills: Corruption and Shadow Bolt. One took effect slowly, and the other couldn't kill instantly and required a cast time. If the robber, who was already in a state of stress, went berserk and started shooting indiscriminately, he and his companions would definitely die faster than him.
So he took out his wallet and threw it into the robber's blue Walmart pocket.
The incident was almost over. Lynn was holding a Corruption spell, ready to cast it on the robber when he turned his head. But then he saw the chubby black guy behind the counter take advantage of the moment when the robber looked down at the money in the bag. Suddenly, he cleverly pulled out a shotgun from under the counter, aimed it at the robber, and pulled the trigger!
