Traveling Between Two Worlds: From Bread for Maids to Fantasy Overlord
Chapter 2: Opening My Eyes to Another World, I Almost Became a Monster Snack
The wind in Black Wind Ridge was cold and foul, making Huang Yiming shiver. He was still wearing the short-sleeved shirt and shorts he wore during his college entrance exams, making him look out of place in this desolate mountain. The roars of the monsters grew closer, accompanied by the sound of branches snapping, as if they would rush towards him at any moment.
"Calm down, calm down, the system has given me a life-saving buff, I'll definitely survive!" Huang Yiming gritted his teeth, suppressing the fear in his heart, and crouched down to move forward through the gaps in the trees, just wanting to find a place to hide.
After walking for an unknown amount of time, a dilapidated shack area came into view ahead. Scattered thatched huts were crumbling, and many ragged refugees stood around them, their faces sallow and emaciated, their eyes numb. When they saw Huang Yiming, this strangely dressed stranger, they all stared at him as if he were a monster, their eyes filled with wariness and greed.
Huang Yiming breathed a sigh of relief; he had finally seen a living person. Just as he was about to approach and speak, a dark shadow suddenly darted out of the bushes beside him with incredible speed, heading straight for him. It was a fanged beast the size of a wild dog, covered in gray fur, with drool dripping from its mouth, and sharp fangs gleaming coldly—clearly a carnivorous ferocious beast.
"Holy crap!" Huang Yiming was terrified out of his wits. He didn't care about his appearance anymore and turned to run away in a panic, yelling, "Don't chase me! Don't eat me! My flesh is sour! It doesn't taste good!"
In his panic, he rushed into the nearest shack. The shack was cramped and dark, filled with a musty smell. Several elderly and weak refugees were hiding inside, and when they saw him rush in, they all shrank back, their eyes filled with fear.
The fanged beast chased Huang Yiming to the entrance of the shack, roaring as it charged inside. Huang Yiming, terrified, crouched in a corner, covering his head, thinking he was about to die. In the chaos, his phone accidentally fell from his pocket, the screen lighting up and a blinding white light instantly illuminating the fanged beast's face.
The monster had never seen such a blinding light before. Thinking it had encountered its natural enemy, it let out a howl in fright, tucked its tail between its legs, turned and ran, disappearing into the forest in an instant.
Huang Yiming collapsed to the ground, panting heavily. His back was already soaked with cold sweat, and his heart was pounding so hard it felt like it would jump out of his throat. He picked up his phone, looked at the black screen, and couldn't help but laugh and cry—he never expected that this broken phone would save his life.
[Ding! Host has successfully scared away the monster, survived, and completed the beginner quest! Rewards: 3 instant noodles, 2 bottled water. Host has reached new heights of cowardice, earning the title of "King of Survival," and receiving an additional stress buff (temporarily increasing reaction speed)!]
The system's finishing blow made Huang Yiming's lips twitch. He was about to curse when he noticed that the refugees in the shack, as well as the group of people who had gathered outside, were all staring intently at him, their eyes fixed on his modern clothes, their eyes gleaming with a green light.
"What's that kid wearing? It looks so smooth, it must be good stuff!" "Skin so delicate, he's obviously not an ordinary person. Maybe he's some young master who's fallen on hard times!" "Maybe he's a fat sheep, we can catch him and trade him for a lot of grain!"
Whispers arose, and Huang Yiming instantly became alert—these refugees looked emaciated, but the greed in their eyes was unmistakable. In this chaotic world, starving people are capable of anything. He even saw several burly men slowly approaching, clutching wooden sticks in their hands.
"What do you want?" Huang Yiming tried to appear calm, shrinking back slightly. He clutched his phone tightly in his hand, his heart pounding with panic. He'd just escaped the jaws of a monster; was he really going to become a sacrifice for the refugees? This was such a terrible start!
An old man with a wrinkled face stepped forward and said in a hoarse voice, "Young man, take off your clothes and hand over the treasure that was shining, and we'll let you go; otherwise, we'll offer you as a sacrifice to the mountain god in exchange for something for everyone to eat!"
Huang Yiming's heart skipped a beat, his face instantly turning deathly pale. Looking at the throng of refugees surrounding him, his palms were drenched in cold sweat. His small frame was no match for these people; was he going to die so soon after transmigrating? Just then, his stomach rumbled inconveniently, and a wave of hunger washed over him.
He suddenly remembered the instant noodles the system reward had given him, and his eyes lit up—perhaps this could save his life. In this strange world where food and clothing were scarce, food was the only true currency. He subconsciously reached for his storage space, silently thinking, "Take out the instant noodles."
The next second, a packet of braised beef noodles appeared out of thin air in his hand, the red packaging standing out conspicuously in the dimly lit shack. The surrounding refugees instantly fell silent, all staring at the packet of instant noodles with eyes full of doubt and curiosity, wondering what it was.
Huang Yiming breathed a sigh of relief, tightening his grip on the instant noodles—he had no choice but to gamble on whether this packet of instant noodles, which was readily available in modern times, could give him a way to survive in this other world.
[Ding! The host has finally figured out how to use supplies to save his life, rewarding him with +1 IQ (current IQ: 51, finally overcoming the threshold of being mentally challenged). Friendly reminder: Don't spill the instant noodle soup on yourself, otherwise the refugees won't be able to get food, they'll just steal your tattered clothes.] The system's sarcastic remark caught Huang Yiming off guard. His hand trembled, and the instant noodles almost fell to the ground. He mentally retorted: You're the mentally challenged one! Your whole family is mentally challenged! Looking at the refugees' menacing eyes, cold sweat broke out on his back. The instant noodles in his hand instantly became his lifesaver, and even his hunger was thrown to the winds.
He deliberately held the instant noodles up in front of him, striking a pose of profound mystery, but in reality, his legs were weak, his knees trembling slightly, and he was panicking terribly. He secretly planned: if this trick didn't work, he'd hug the noodles and crawl into the innermost part of the shack, refusing to come out no matter what, even if it meant fighting the refugees—he'd rather die starving than live like a ghost. The air in the shack seemed to freeze; the refugees' gazes were fixed on the instant noodles like searchlights, and the sound of someone swallowing was particularly clear. Huang Yiming tried to appear calm, but his fingertips gripped the packaging tightly, his knuckles turning white. He silently prayed that the instant noodles would keep things in check and that things wouldn't go wrong.
[Ding! Host, stop pretending. Your lips are twitching like a rattle drum. Your aloof persona is about to crumble. Quickly make some instant noodles. The aroma can solve everything. If all else fails, just throw the noodles out and run away. Your life is more important than showing off.] The system's sharp tongue accurately exposed his pretense. Huang Yiming's lips twitched, but he forced himself to remain calm as he tore open the seasoning packet. Inwardly, he cursed the system for being a professional sabotager, but his hands didn't dare to slow down. He just wanted to release the aroma as soon as possible to subdue these starving refugees.
