Tokyo: Let the wicked women pay the price!

Chapter 5: A Bizarre Room Check

Fujino, with a sandwich in his mouth, squeezed onto the first tram.

That's how I managed to get to the department before I was late.

The psychiatry department is primarily responsible for treating mental illnesses and epilepsy, but in 2005, it was almost a marginal department.

Apart from Kento Kasai, who sits on the professor's throne, the Department of Psychiatry has only one assistant professor, two specialists, and three specialists led by Fujino, as well as several trainees.

As a seasoned professional with one foot in the field of specialized medicine, Fujino is respected within the department.

At least Kasai didn't scold him for being almost late; instead, he urged him to change his clothes quickly so they could go check on the patients together.

Like other departments, the psychiatry department also has a large ward round team, much like a "queue of famous people".

But unlike other departments, the psychiatric department is not overcrowded.

However, this is only the smallest difference.

All the necessary procedures are still followed.

Professor Kasai listened with his hands behind his back as the head nurse reported on the patients' sleep patterns from the previous night.

Kenjiro Tsuchimikado, a trainee doctor under Fujino's tutelage, approached him and asked in a low voice, "Fujino-senpai, is...sleep quality important?"

Fujino glanced at him but didn't say anything.

He's been rotating through the psychiatric ward for a full week now, does this common knowledge even need to be repeated?

But seeing the clear yet foolish looks in the eyes of the resident doctors around him, he sighed and didn't lower his voice.

"Kenjiro-kun, what department are we in?"

"Psychiatry, senior."

"What illness does the patient have?"

"Mental illness..."

"If they can sleep peacefully, their condition is considered stable."

"This..." Tsuchimikado clearly hadn't expected the answer to be so simple.

"Kenjiro-kun, many mental illnesses are incurable throughout life." Fujino's voice held a hint of emotion. "The fact that they can live a stable life in society is already a cure."

"If anyone tells you that he can cure all mental illnesses, you should create a medical record for him."

Ignoring Kenjiro, who seemed lost in thought behind him, he caught up with Professor Kasai and arrived at the door of the VIP ward.

Just then, the old man Kasai stood at the door with a group of doctors in white coats, silently watching the argument between the head nurse and the patient inside.

"Mr. Nagano, you really live alone in this house."

"I told you, nurse! Someone stole my hot water."

Seeing Tsuchimikado's slightly excited expression due to gossip, Fujino pursed his lips.

He quietly nudged Tsuchimikado and whispered, "Rare case, take a good look."

Indeed, it is quite rare to see a mental patient having an episode during ward rounds early in the morning.

Just like those suffering from NetEase Cloud Music depression, people's emotions usually fluctuate the most late at night.

In the hospital room, Mr. Nagano, holding a basin of water, roared indignantly at the head nurse, "Some bastard really stole my hot water! Why don't you believe me?"

"I'm really not having a seizure!"

The head nurse gave a helpless, wry smile: "Who would steal your hot water? The hot water room is right next door."

Unfortunately, Mr. Nagano's words were ignored by the head nurse.

In psychiatric wards, the hardest thing for patients to prove is that they don't have a mental illness.

"I'm not hallucinating. Why won't you believe me? I just want you to find this patient and discipline him properly!"

Fujino listened to the commotion and saw Mr. Nagano's irritable appearance; he did indeed seem to be having an episode.

But Fujino felt it didn't make sense; the anger seemed too real, and Mr. Nagano's logic didn't seem like that of a paranoid person.

Is Mr. Nagano really angry because his things were stolen?

He stared at Mr. Nagano's face, and activated his micro-expression analysis.

[His brows were furrowed, his eyes were wide and bloodshot, his nose was slightly wrinkled, and his teeth were clenched—it was an expression of anger.]

[His eyes were fixed on the basin of water, and he wasn't looking around, so he shouldn't be hallucinating.] → [This is unlikely to be schizophrenia.]

The repeated use of "hot water" indicates that hot water is a key point, suggesting he is likely not lying.

This doesn't seem like bipolar disorder or impotent rage, nor does it resemble hallucinations from schizophrenia. Rather, it's more like anger stemming from something being stolen.

Fujino gently rubbed his chin, looking at Mr. Nagano, constantly pondering the possibilities.

At the same time, Professor Kasai scanned the army, his gaze lingering on Kotori Mitsuki, the specialist doctor. He gently raised his chin, as if to ask her to give everyone a lesson.

It's become a regular practice for professors to call on specialists or certified physicians to explain patients' conditions during ward rounds.

Koki Takanashi sensed the gaze, coughed twice, and came to the front of the group.

She was petite, less than 1.6 meters tall, and even the smallest size white coat looked somewhat comical on her.

However, her exquisite makeup made her stand out immediately among the middle-aged, greasy male doctors with messy, disheveled hair.

[Takanashi Mitsuki: Kasai the old man is making things difficult again. Nagano is notoriously troublesome; he's severely schizophrenic. Is he trying to embarrass me in front of everyone? You're really something, old man. Just die already so someone else can have a place!]

[Worldline 1: Dr. Takanashi's miraculous healing skills immediately diagnosed Nagano's condition. You choose to flatter her. (Reward: Lunch with Takanashi Mitsuki, and even a chance for an indirect kiss)]

[Worldline 2: Dr. Takanashi is completely incomprehensible and manages to get away with it. You pretend nothing happened. (Reward: 50000 yen)]

[Worldline 3: Dr. Takanashi spouts nonsense, not a single thing she says is correct. You choose to teach her what medical skills are and immediately correct her. (Reward: Takanashi Mitsuki's hostility + Mr. Nagano's discharge bonus)]

Fujino remained silent, watching Takanashi's performance with pursed lips.

He wasn't surprised at all that his petty boss was a wicked woman.

"Hmm, everyone, look at Nagano-kun's ferocious expression. It's probably a bipolar disorder episode, or a manic phase of bipolar disorder." Takanashi frowned. "But he also has some paranoia, accompanied by his roommates who don't even exist in his imagination. It's probably a symptom of schizophrenia."

Professor Kasai frowned upon hearing this.

Even after seeing the panel and knowing that Takanashi might be misdiagnosed, Fujino's expression wasn't very pleasant.

Upon hearing this diagnosis, Tsuchimikado, who was on the outermost edge of the group, even chuckled softly and muttered, "So many illnesses at once? Poor Mr. Nagano."

Clearly, Takanashi is not a woman of broad-mindedness. In fact, Fujino believes that just looking at her figure is enough to warrant arresting her as a lolicon.

"Tsuchimikado! How can you still laugh in such a serious scene!" She raised her head arrogantly, and everyone made way for her to pass directly to Tsuchimikado.

"Uh, Takanashi-senpai..."

"Tch, so what are your thoughts? When you're laughing at me, you'd better use your brain and come up with some other perspective!"

Tsuchimikado was already rather short, and his round face turned bright red.

Takanashi's finger was practically shoving into his nostril: "You're punished by having to organize all the medical records for this floor today. Who's your supervising doctor?"

"Kazuke-kun, is it?" She rubbed her temples, as if suddenly realizing something. "Then you should just fix it yourself and leave it to Kazuhiko-kun!"

Fujino Kazuhiko stepped forward and gently slapped away her hand, which was about to help Tsuchimikado pick his nose: "Mitsuki-senpai, I think Tsuchimikado doesn't need to waste his time on these trivial matters."

As he watched the trainees around him write down terms like "bipolar disorder" and "manic-depressive disorder" in their notes, his expression grew even more unpleasant, and his words became less polite: "After all, I have a brain and am qualified to refute your diagnosis. At the very least, I can't let these future doctors learn the wrong knowledge."

"Huh? You?!" She was about to reprimand him when she saw that only the back of Fujino's head was visible, which made her so angry that she could only stomp her feet.

Fujino Kazuhiko ignored "Clown Yu" and spoke directly to Mr. Nagano.

"Mr. Nagano, are you getting hot water to wash your face?"

Mr. Nagano looked at Fujino Kazuhiko for a moment, then nodded: "You must be Mr. Fujino. Yes, I'm here to wash my face in the morning, but thieves keep stealing my hot water, it's really annoying!"

"I don't think you saw any unfamiliar people in the house."

Mr. Nagano frowned, and after a long while shook his head: "No. I told you, I don't have schizophrenia, I'm not hallucinating."

Fujino spread his hands and said to the resident doctors, "The patients have caught a cold in their brains, and we prescribe medicine to help them relieve their symptoms. Humans are amazing; they can regulate their own state."

"Don't treat them as intellectually disabled; Mr. Nagano's logic is perfectly sound."

Takanashi took two steps forward: "You really believe what the patients say? They're hallucinating; it could mislead the diagnosis."

Mr. Nagano interjected promptly, "Are you an idiot, woman? You're the one hallucinating!"

Takanashi's face instantly turned bright red: "You? You!!!"

Seeing the trainees' suppressed laughter, Fujino interrupted her outburst: "Hey, Mitsuki-senpai, are you really going to argue with a patient like that?"

He and Professor Kasai exchanged glances, and seeing no rebuke in the old man's eyes, he dared to continue.

Fujino Kazuhiko patted Nagano-san on the shoulder: "Nagano-san, next time you fill up the hot water, remember to put it in the kettle."

"If you leave water in a basin overnight, even the hottest water will cool down."

Nagano scratched his head: "Huh? I see?"

"But you need to reduce your dosage a little more; it's already affecting your common sense."

[The Takanashi Koki world line has concluded.]

[Reward: Mitsuki Takanashi's hostility + Mr. Nagano's discharge bonus]

Seeing that the somewhat dejected Takanashi Mitsuki was still glaring at him with hostility, even making a decapitation gesture near her neck with her mouth slightly open as if to say, "Make me look bad like this? Don't give me the chance, Fujino Kazuhiko!"

A slight smile appeared on Fujino's lips.

These are all minor issues.

Unlike surgical procedures, which require a specialist to be present with one or two assistants, this procedure is not performed in a surgical setting.

The specialists in their department don't have much control over certified and resident physicians, and they simply can't control the life or death of their juniors.

She passed Fujino and, as she rejoined the group, muttered under her breath, "Fujino Kazuhiko! You bastard! Just you wait!"

Professor Kasai's voice was decisive and gentle: "Trainees, this is all invaluable teaching."

"Remember, misdiagnosis is common, and even if you go to a specialist, there's no guarantee it won't happen."

"Observe more and think more."

He smiled warmly: "Not everyone in the psychiatric ward is a weirdo."

"At the very least, when it's necessary to reduce the dosage, it should be reduced accordingly."

"By the way, Mr. Nagano is doing very well. Fujino, prepare to contact his family and arrange for his discharge from the hospital."
