Chapter 143 Conflict
As soon as he finished speaking, the guard's lips curled into a faint smile.
The smile lasted only a moment, but Luo An sensed something strange in his breathing.
The guard saluted again and staggered away.
"Luo An!"
Just then, Pétain's voice called out from afar.
Pétain Silversor led his guards, carrying torches, and quickly crossed the forest.
"What's going on? I could feel your breathing from a distance, it alerted the entire fortress."
Pétain, holding a torch high, appeared at the edge of the woods and paused in surprise.
Before him lay a vast expanse of collapsed trees, with the ground showing signs of an explosion spreading outwards from Luo An's location.
Just looking at this ravaged forest, one can imagine the ferocity of the battle. It was certainly no less intense than hand-to-hand combat with a dragon.
Pétain looked at Roan and, seeing that Roan was still standing, immediately breathed a sigh of relief and laughed heartily.
"Luo An, why aren't you saying anything? I want to see what could possibly have beaten you to this extent!"
He ran towards Roan in a few quick steps and saw Levi's body.
Pétain paused for a moment, then quickly rubbed his eyes. He held the torch high so he could see better.
"Levi's?" Pétain called softly.
Pétain turned to Roan, then looked at Levi.
As a soldier, he already knew the answer in his heart.
But he still refused to believe it, and suddenly roared, "Call someone! Call the church! Levi is injured!"
"No need," Roan said softly. "Levi is dead."
"Impossible!" Bette spat.
"Roan! You can use miracles! Quick, save Levi! Isn't he your mentor? Don't just stand there! Get moving!"
Pétan rushed toward Roan, but after only two steps, he slowed down.
"Damn it!" He slammed the torch to the ground.
"Damn it! What happened?! Levi is dead? Was it a monster? No! He's covered in sword wounds!"
Pétain abruptly turned to Roan, his eyes bloodshot, and said, word by word.
"Roan, don't tell me you killed Reeves."
Luo An was speechless for a moment, wanting to say something, but lacking the strength to speak.
Was it the work of the Black God? He turned Lord Levi into a cultist.
What's the big deal? Lord Levi is not a cultist and will never be corrupted.
Just then, Heather Lorton quietly landed behind Pétain.
She glanced at Levi's, her calm eyes widening before returning to their usual indifference.
"Levi, I never imagined your end would be like this."
Pétain suddenly grabbed Roan, his face contorted with rage. "Say something, you fucking thing!"
"Come on, explain to me! Say that Levi was misled by cultists and you had no choice but to act! Come on, tell me!"
Luo An shook his head. "I killed him. It's related to the God of Black."
"Bullshit! Do you think I'm stupid?! You're trying to fool me with this excuse?"
So what if Levi's been misled by cultists?
"There are so many ways, why are you so determined to kill him? You absolutely must kill him?!"
"He's your mentor! Don't you have any humanity left?"
"Would you be fit to be a knight?"
"You're wrong," Roan corrected. "Levi wasn't misled by cultists."
"You fucking!"
Pétain suddenly raised his fist, met Roan's gaze, but couldn't bring himself to strike.
Luo An's eyes were filled with sadness, and it was definitely not fake.
Gritting his teeth, Pétan released Roan, suddenly raised his fist, and slammed it hard into Roan's face.
"Damn it, why am I so weak! Why! Why!"
"Pétain!" Heather called out to Pétain, her brows furrowing slightly.
"Stop! What are you doing?! Take Levi's back to Lowton."
Pétain glared at Heather fiercely.
"You filthy woman, do you know what you're saying?"
"You don't know who died? Open your eyes and look carefully, it's Levi!"
"He was your former mentor! Your and Luo An's mentor!"
"I know," Heather said calmly. "Therefore, I will give Reeves a proper burial with the highest honors of Lorton."
Pétain was stunned. He looked at Roan and Heather in disbelief, as if he were meeting them for the first time.
"Fine." Pétain laughed in anger.
"Fine, that explains why you two are so calm. You're both ungrateful wretches!"
"Levi really misjudged people. He had two knights as squires, and after he died, you couldn't even shed a single tear for him."
"Like a dead dog, right?"
"Pétain!" Heather's voice rose a few decibels.
"Either shut up and take Levi away, or get out of here!"
"Fuck you, Heather Lorton!"
Pétain abruptly ripped off the armor of the Lorton Guard, threw it violently to the ground, and turned to leave.
"I quit! I'm a fucking knight!"
"Very good." Heather instructed the guards, "The rest of you, take Reeves to the church first, wait a moment, I will take him back to Lorton."
The guards looked at each other, and for a moment remained silent.
"Did you hear me!" Heather glared at the guard.
The guard then carefully approached Levi's, first offering a prayer to Levi's great mother, and whispering softly.
"Great knight, Lord Levi, may the great mother watch over you."
They found a makeshift stretcher, and just as they were about to leave, Heather stepped forward, took out a gem, and placed it on Levi's body.
The gemstone emitted a faint golden light, and the dirt and bloodstains on Levi's armor and pale face slowly disappeared.
"That's enough," Heather said, putting away the gems. "Only the necessary patrols will remain tonight; the rest can go and rest."
"Also, have someone follow Pétan Silversor; he's going back to Lorton, so prepare a horse for him."
"Yes." The guard nodded and left first.
The remaining people cleaned up the traces of the battlefield.
Heather turned to look at Roan, who hadn't said a word the entire time.
After a moment's hesitation, Heather stepped forward. "Roan."
Luo An nodded as a gesture of respect.
"Your Lordship"
"Tell me, how did Levi die?"
"Yes." Roan bowed again. "Lord Levi was killed by me. He was not misled by the cultists."
"Then why is that?" Heather immediately pressed.
".......I'm sorry." How could Roan say that Levi's death was because he stole the dragon's flesh and blood?
Heather looked at Roan but didn't press him for details. "Okay, I believe you, Roan Yunina."
You don't have to tell me now; you can tell me when you've calmed down.
Luo An was taken aback, then gave Heather a grateful look. Actually, Luo An had already recovered.
"Thanks."
"Ha," Heather shook her head, "No need to thank me, I don't trust you. Even if you killed Reeves, the fact that he was smiling before he died at least proves that you didn't betray him."
"I'm just feeling a bit emotional; I was prepared a long time ago."
Heather took a deep breath. "The last knight of the Golden Age, this is how it ends."
She shook her head, shaking off the sadness in her heart. "Luo An, you should rest first, get some sleep. The construction of the fortress has only just begun; we need to finish the work that Levi left us."
"..." Upon hearing this, Luo An raised his head. He no longer had any reason to stay in the fortress or in Loton.
