Chapter 23 Ryan the Jealous
The red-haired nun stood in front of the church, a gentle smile on her face, and raised her hand to greet the soldiers.
"Greetings, fellow warriors," she said softly, "I am Ya Yang from Lorton Town."
"I'm sorry to trouble you all with this long journey."
Even the guards on the lower levels, who had been to the church, had only caught glimpses of Ya Yang from afar. Let alone spoken to the nuns.
The guards unconsciously breathed a little heavier, gazing at Ya Yang with fervent eyes.
Several believers of the Great Mother knelt down, clenching their fists in prayer before their chests, in response to Ya Yang gently stroking their heads and softly chanting prayers.
"Warriors, our great mother left the village for the first time, stepping into the boundless darkness out of fear."
"Even great people have been afraid, so she knows how precious it is to have the courage to step into the darkness."
May our great mother always watch over us.
Everyone, including Luo An, was enveloped in a faint glow.
[Miracle: A Glimmer of Light.]
[This tells the story of the great mother, Ze'el, first venturing into the wilderness.]
In the darkness, Zel lit the first torch, its light guiding her forward.
[Telling tales of miracles is said to give travelers a long-lasting glimmer of light, illuminating their path, frightening away wild beasts, and even bringing good fortune.]
Even if it's not the first time I've seen a [miracle],
Luo An couldn't help but marvel at the wonder of the miracle.
All it takes is faith and recounting miracles to accomplish what alchemy requires immense effort to achieve.
Regardless, this is a good thing. The morale of the guards has clearly improved.
After performing the miracle, Ya Yang's face paled slightly as she walked towards the carriage prepared for her alone.
As Ya Yang passed by Luo An, she suddenly stopped, her soft smile momentarily turning playful. She whispered:
"Luo An, be careful."
Luo An immediately gave a wry smile and said in a low voice, "Please spare me, it was just a little joke."
"You bastard Luo An, you actually think it's just a joke!" Ya Yang glared at Luo An and walked straight to the carriage.
It was clearly Ya Yang who impulsively proposed the bet, so how come Luo An is the one who's wrong?
Luo An shook his head, about to give the order to advance, when he saw the guards all staring at him.
Jally quietly gave a thumbs-up. He mouthed:
"Lord Luo An, keep it up!"
For the first time, Roan felt a headache coming on. "...Jary is on watch tonight."
The column began to move forward.
Luo An, as the captain, was at the forefront.
Ya Yang was in the middle of the group.
The escort was handled by the church knight Ryan, and no guards were allowed to approach except for Roan.
The rest of the people dispersed around the carriage, keeping watch and looking out for each other.
According to the report, the villages where cult members were found were Creekwood, Riverview, and Cosette.
All three villages are located right on the first river.
Therefore, the plan is to first visit the nearest village, Riverwood, then Riverview, and finally Cosette, which is located on the border.
It would take at least ten days to walk there.
But that's just an ideal situation.
Just after leaving the main road, Luo An waved for the group to stop.
Ryan looked around. It was all white. In this wilderness, any approaching target could be spotted at a glance.
He walked towards Luo An. "Why did you stop?"
Luo An raised his chin and pointed to the muddy road.
"It snowed, then melted, and now the roads are all muddy. Lord Ryan."
The muddy road had little impact on the guards wearing leather armor.
But this is quite a problem for Ryan, who is wearing heavy armor.
Ryan couldn't help but look at Roan gratefully. If Roan hadn't reminded him, he would have been heartbroken if he had fallen for it.
Ryan instinctively asked, "What should we do then?"
As soon as he opened his mouth, Ryan regretted it. He immediately felt the guards' glares.
Anyone with eyes can see what to do.
Luo An was also taken aback for a moment. Compared to the guards, Luo An was very patient. "Take it off and put on medium or light armor."
Light armor is usually worn over heavy armor for ease of movement.
This method is the most effective and fastest.
Ryan had to admit that Roan was right.
His gaze fell on Luo An, and the words he was about to say suddenly changed his mind.
"No, as a knight, one should always be vigilant. Roan, you are a knight of Levi's, and you can't even do that?"
What the heck?
For a moment, Luo An thought he had misheard.
What does wearing light armor have to do with staying alert?
They even brought up Mr. Levi's name.
If he knew that when Levi's privately trained Roan, Roan would be shirtless, chugging beer and telling dirty jokes, he'd probably have a breakdown of his faith and commit suicide.
Luo An knew that Ryan just wanted to have a pointless competition with him.
Although there was an entry for "The Beginning of the Journey," it was no different for Luo An than wearing hemp clothing, so he decided to take a step back.
"I also felt it was heavy, so I took off my leather armor to cool down."
Ryan, however, stood tall and proud.
"A knight never takes off his armor! I am the true knight!"
"..." Luo An also stopped what he was doing, turned around and instructed, "Please cut some grass to put on the road to prevent the wheels from getting stuck in the mud."
This was originally a necessary step to ensure the safe movement of the carriage.
Ryan, however, interpreted it as Roan's concession.
"As a knight, you should uphold the code of chivalry. Didn't Levi teach you that?"
Luo An shrugged, took a sickle from the carriage, and turned to cut grass.
"Hey, where are you going?" Ryan was momentarily confused. "As a knight, you're doing such lowly work as mowing lawns?!"
Is it despicable?
Luo An had never thought of it that way.
"It's just necessary work to complete the mission," Luo An replied casually, walking into the snow and clearing away the grass so as not to damage the wheat.
Ryan stood frozen in place, remembering what the noble Knight Levi had once said.
"As a knight, one should remain humble."
Ryan gritted his teeth. "This guy! Is he saying I'm not humble?"
"How could that be?! Why would a knight cut grass?! A knight would never do such a lowly job!"
Luo An must be faking it!
Roan is the "hypocritical" knight.
Compared to Ryan, whose mind was racing, Roan carefully searched for a patch of fine, dry grass.
Holding the sickle in his hand, Luo An couldn't help but feel a little emotional.
It's been so long since I've held a sickle.
Having worked as a stable boy for three years, Roan could only rank second in horse training.
However, Luo An's skill in mowing grass had reached the level of martial arts.
The sickle fell with a swift motion.
Withered grass fell like rain.
Luo An alone is almost as good as five guards.
Gradually, the guards stopped cutting grass and began carrying away the dry grass that Luo An had cut.
The guards almost couldn't keep up with Roan's speed.
Even with repeated transport, the withered grass still piled up like a small mountain.
Everyone is busy.
Only Ryan silently watched Roan.
Under his helmet, Ryan's teeth were clenched so tightly they were grinding together.
Soon, the muddy road was covered with neatly arranged weeds, and the carriage moved forward slowly.
The guards cheered as they safely crossed the muddy road.
After all, nobody wants to work covered in mud.
"As expected of Lord Luo An. Even his grass-cutting skills are amazing," Jia Li exclaimed.
When others said that, Luo An simply took it as flattery.
But Roan really couldn't handle Jalley.
I could only smile wryly and pretend I hadn't heard.
Compared to the bustling guards, Ryan, untouched by any mud, stood silently on the periphery of the crowd.
He gripped the sword tightly in his hand. He gritted his teeth.
He would never stoop to such a lowly job, nor would he indulge in worldly flattery.
Because in the face of true power, those illusory things are simply not worth mentioning.
