78: Bringing his wife and children to Harbin Institute of Technology
Chapter 9 Considerations
Upon hearing Liu Deben's question, Ye Bingwen replied without hesitation, "Because my wife has given up a lot for me."
His voice wasn't loud, but every word was clear: "She was a promising student for Tsinghua or Peking University. If she hadn't married me, she could have gotten into university this year. But she chose to live with me, have my children, and take care of my parents. I can't let her suffer with me."
He paused, then continued, "I came to university not to shirk my responsibilities. I want to learn knowledge and conduct research, but first and foremost, I am a husband and a father. What's the use of learning so much if I can't even take care of my family?"
The office was silent for a few seconds.
Liu Deben suddenly laughed, a hearty laugh, "Good, well said!"
He stood up, walked to the window, and turned his back to the three people. "When I was young, I studied in the Soviet Union. I went alone, while my wife and children stayed in China. I didn't go back for three years. When I finally returned, my son didn't even recognize me."
He turned to look at Ye Bingwen, "So I understand your thinking. A person who values relationships and honors others will also excel in scholarship."
Cai Xun and Ma Kui exchanged a glance and both breathed a sigh of relief.
"However..." Liu Deben changed the subject, and the two became tense again.
"The academic affairs office does have differing opinions about the double degree issue." Liu Deben sat back down in his chair. "It's too much academic pressure for a student to study two majors at the same time, and whether they can even graduate is a question. They're worried that if they don't do well in either, it will ruin the student's future."
Ma Kui quickly said, "Principal Liu, you can rest assured about Ye Bingwen's abilities. He'll have absolutely no problem with the mathematics department's courses!"
Cai Xun also said, "He can handle the mechanical engineering courses; his foundation is exceptionally strong."
Liu Deben raised his hand to stop the two, "I know you're eager to see talent. But I need to verify this myself."
He looked at Ye Bingwen and said, "Ye Bingwen, I'll give you three days. During these three days, you'll attend senior-level professional courses in the Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics departments. After that, I'll give you a test. If you pass, I'll personally approve your double degree application. If you don't pass, you'll have to study one major first and consider a minor in your second year. How about that?"
Ye Bingwen agreed almost without hesitation.
"Alright!" Liu Deben slammed his hand on the table. "Then it's settled. Director Cai, Director Ma, you two go and make the arrangements. Ye Bingwen, stay behind; I have a few more words to say."
Cai Xun and Ma Kui tactfully took their leave, leaving only Ye Bingwen and Liu Deben in the office.
"Ye Bingwen, do you know why I'm willing to see you?" Liu Deben asked.
"Because of my grades?" Ye Bingwen probed.
"Grades are one aspect," Liu Deben shook his head, "but more importantly, it's what your exam paper reveals."
He pulled a physics paper from the pile of exam papers, pointed to the last big question, and said, "This question tests the fundamentals of fluid mechanics. The standard solution is Bernoulli's equation. But you used a different method, the Lagrange method, which is not high school knowledge, or even university-level general physics. This is something you learn at the graduate level."
Ye Bingwen's heart skipped a beat.
He knew he had revealed something. In his previous life, he was a professor at Peking University, and he had this knowledge memorized by heart. He hadn't thought too much about it during the exam and just wrote it down without thinking.
"Don't be nervous," Liu Deben smiled. "I'm not trying to find out anything. I just want to tell you that your talent and knowledge far surpass those of your peers. That's why I'm willing to give you this opportunity."
He stood up, walked over to Ye Bingwen, patted him on the shoulder, and said, "Prepare well and don't let me down."
"Thank you, Principal Liu." Ye Bingwen nodded solemnly.
As Ye Bingwen left the school office, he let out a long sigh of relief.
Cai Xun and Ma Kui were still waiting in the corridor. When they saw him come out, they immediately surrounded him.
"What did the principal say to you?" Cai Xun asked curiously.
"It's nothing, just a few words of encouragement," Ye Bingwen said without elaborating.
Ma Kui laughed and said, "Alright, no matter what, it's a good thing that the principal is willing to give you a chance. Come on, I'll take you to see the class you'll be attending tomorrow."
The three went downstairs, and Ma Kui pulled a class schedule out of his pocket. "There's an 'Introduction to Functional Analysis' course in the Mathematics Department tomorrow morning. It's a graduate-level course, but undergraduates can also audit it. Do you want to give it a try?"
"Functional analysis?" Ye Bingwen thought for a moment, "Okay."
Cai Xun grew anxious, "Old Ma, don't pull people over to your side! Bingwen, the Mechanical Engineering Department has a course called 'Mechanical Vibration' tomorrow afternoon, it's a major course, you should come and listen in too."
Ye Bingwen was both amused and exasperated. "Both teachers, I'll listen to you both, okay?"
"That's more like it." Cai Xun nodded in satisfaction.
As the three were talking, a familiar figure hurried over.
It is Zheng Shuyun.
"Bingwen, Bingwen!" Zheng Shuyun ran out of breath, still holding Ye An'an in her arms.
"What's wrong?" Ye Bingwen's heart tightened.
"An'an... An'an seems to have a fever." Zheng Shuyun's eyes were red. "I just took her temperature, it's 38.5 degrees Celsius."
Ye Bingwen quickly took his daughter; the little girl's face was flushed, and her forehead was indeed burning hot.
"Teacher Cai, Teacher Ma, I have to go back first." Ye Bingwen was extremely anxious.
"Go quickly!" Cai Xun waved his hand, "The child is the priority."
Ma Kui added, "There's a clinic nearby, I'll take you there!"
The group hurried towards the school gate. Ye Bingwen carried An'an, Zheng Shuyun carried the luggage, and Ma Kui led the way.
The autumn wind was a bit chilly. Ye Bingwen wrapped An'an in his coat, and the little girl hummed sleepily.
"Good girl, An'an, Daddy's here," Ye Bingwen coaxed softly, but his steps quickened.
An inexplicable anger rose within him.
I encountered this situation as soon as I arrived in Harbin. I was unfamiliar with the place and couldn't even find a hospital.
Ma Kui shouted from ahead, "It's just ahead, just around the corner!"
The group turned into a small alley and saw a two-story building with a sign that read "Yuejin Health Center" in the distance.
Just then, a middle-aged man in a Zhongshan suit came out of the small building and almost bumped into Ye Bingwen.
"Can't you watch where you're going?!" the middle-aged man cursed, then looked up and saw Ma Kui, pausing for a moment. "Director Ma?"
Ma Kui recognized him too, "Old Wang? What are you doing here?"
"I'm here for a medical checkup." The middle-aged man, Wang Jianguo, was a workshop director at the Harbin Electric Machinery Factory and an old acquaintance of Ma Kui. His gaze fell on the child in Ye Bingwen's arms. "This is..."
"My student's child has a fever," Ma Kui introduced briefly. "Bingwen, this is Director Wang from the motor factory."
Ye Bingwen didn't bother with pleasantries, nodded, and was about to go inside.
Wang Jianguo called out to him, "Wait! This health center is closed this afternoon; the doctors are in a meeting."
Ye Bingwen paused, his face instantly darkening.
Ma Kui panicked. "What should we do? Are there any other hospitals nearby?"
Wang Jianguo thought for a moment, "The nearest one is a 20-minute walk away. Take my car, I'll give you a ride."
"Then I'll have to trouble Director Wang," Ma Kui said quickly.
Wang Jianguo's car was a nearly new Jeep. Ye Bingwen was holding An'an in the back seat, while Zheng Shuyun held her daughter's little hand beside them.
The car started and drove towards the nearest hospital.
As Ye Bingwen watched the street scene rushing past the window, he thought to himself: The medical conditions in Harbin are really too poor. I need to prepare commonly used medicines in advance in the future.
An idea arose in his mind.
I need to make money as soon as possible, not only for baby formula, but also to gain a foothold in this city.
The development of brushless motors must be accelerated.
