Legendary Captain

Chapter 13 Supercharger System

Xu Xian seemed to have a cheat code; he had already figured out all the methods at the very beginning of the investigation and even predicted the bad things the trainees might do.

Nip any danger in the bud!

He operated with the precision of a machine; in the less than two seconds from when the main warning light came on to when he stopped the trainee from releasing the accelerator, Xu Xian's eyelids didn't even twitch.

While this behavior is undesirable, flying simulators isn't about passing simulator tests, but rather about supplementing skills that can't be practiced on regular flights. Separating regular flights from simulator training is a mindset that is highly detrimental to skill development.

However, Xu Xian had no choice! Various external conditions forced Xu Xian to choose this opportunistic approach!

As a voice as cold as ice rang out, it instantly knocked the student's right hand off the throttle. According to regulations, after V1, the pilot should release their hand from the throttle. This is to prevent the pilot from mishandling the throttle after V1.

It's not just about regulations; Xu Xian can only feel truly at ease when the trainee's hand is off the accelerator pedal!

Xu Xian finally understood that this time he not only had to deal with He Changyuan, the inspector, but also had to be wary of what kind of trouble the trainees on his left might cause.

Tired of heart!

After Xu Xian pushed away the trainee's right hand, which was gripping the accelerator, he looked up at the overhead panel and realized that the rear cargo hold light was on. Without the initial sense of urgency that followed the main warning light illuminating, the trainee quickly regained his composure and realized he had almost made a grave mistake.

The student was at a loss. He turned around, wanting to explain a few words to Xu Xian, but when he met Xu Xian's gloomy profile, he didn't have the courage to say the first word.

Generally speaking, according to the takeoff performance analysis obtained from a dry runway, the difference between V1 and Vr is very small. Almost a few seconds after V1 is reached, the speed will increase to Vr.

As the student turned to look at Xu Xian, and after confirming that the student's hands had left the throttle, Xu Xian withdrew his left hand and gripped the control wheel firmly with both hands again. Even with such a drastic change in posture as lifting the wheel, it's still necessary to use both hands to maintain sufficient stability.

Xu Xian is not so arrogant as to lift the wheels during takeoff and operate the system with one hand!

After takeoff, the presence of the rear cargo hold light may indicate that the rear cargo hold door is not properly closed, meaning there is a leak in the aircraft's airtightness, which could pose a risk of depressurization.

More importantly, Yunnan Airport is at an altitude of nearly 7,000 feet. After climbing 3,000 feet, if the rear cargo door is indeed not closed properly, the cabin altitude warning will likely sound and the warning lights will illuminate. If this happens, the situation becomes complicated.

At 3,000 feet, the ascent rate at takeoff would be reached in about two minutes, indicating that Xu Xian only had two minutes to make a decision.

Xu Xian practically led the trainees through the speed-up and expansion plan, during which the trainees also thought about the issue of stress relief.

"Brother, should we keep climbing?" the student asked, sounding a little nervous.

The initial altitude for this takeoff was 3300 meters, or 10800 feet. If we continued to climb from that initial altitude, we would be over 10,000 feet, and the cabin altitude warning would likely go off.

It was precisely because of these concerns that he asked Xu Xian his questions!

"First, check the cabin altitude gauge to see if the cabin altitude is trending downwards! Then check the pressure difference. If the cargo door is open, the pressure difference between the inside and outside should be close to zero. Even if there is no pressurization, we still need to go up to the minimum safe altitude first," Xu Xian said unhurriedly.

Even if the cargo door were open, he didn't think it would be a difficult problem.

"Cabin altitude gauge, descending? What does that mean? Pressure... what should the normal differential pressure be? And bro... I don't know what the minimum safe altitude is at Yunnan Airport!" He understood every word Xu Xian said, but he didn't understand them when they were put together.

What are cockpit altitude gauges, differential pressure, and minimum safe altitude? These are all too magical for trainees who have just undergone initial modifications; it's a field they haven't even encountered yet.

According to the aircraft's automatic pressurization plan, after the aircraft begins its climb, the pressurization system will pressurize the cabin altitude to slightly below the takeoff airport altitude. This is why the altitude gauge will drop after takeoff. If the altitude gauge drops briefly after takeoff, it indicates that the pressurization system and its effectiveness are normal.

Similarly, after takeoff, the pressurization system pressurizes the cabin to maintain a relatively stable cabin altitude, ensuring sufficient passenger comfort. This results in a higher pressure inside the cabin than outside, creating a pressure difference.

Normally, a pressurization system maintains a pressure differential of seven to eight PSI, which is considered normal. If a leak occurs, preventing pressurization, the pressure differential will continuously decrease until it reaches zero. A zero pressure differential means that the cabin is completely open to the outside world; the cabin altitude is the same as the aircraft altitude. In other words, pressurization is no longer effective.

If the rear cargo door really wasn't closed tightly, such a large gap would cause the pressurization to almost fail, and the pressure difference should be close to zero. That's why Xu Xian had the trainees check the pressure difference gauge.

The minimum safe altitude is to prevent them from being unable to descend below 10,000 feet within 25 nautical miles of Dianchi Airport in the event of actual decompression, as the minimum safe altitude within 25 nautical miles of Dianchi Airport is 3600 meters. They must first ascend to 3600 meters to ensure there is no risk of terrain obstacles, and then, following air traffic control instructions, continue their descent to return and land!

The most important thing in dealing with special situations is knowing what to do next and having a plan! The trainee clearly lacked this, because he didn't even have the most basic knowledge, let alone the ability to connect and apply that knowledge flexibly.

Faced with the student's three ignorant questions, Xu Xian's heart sank. Good heavens, this guy is a complete blank slate, he doesn't know anything!

Helpless, Xu Xian, while controlling the plane, said, "You don't need to worry about it, just follow my instructions!"

Xu Xian understood; even as a tool, this guy was clearly incompetent. Once the plane stabilized, Xu Xian would then focus his attention on checking the pressurization.

Just as Xu Xian was talking to the trainee, Instructor He Changyuan, who was behind him, tapped his index finger lightly on the control panel. His mind was filled with the image of Xu Xian pressing the accelerator lever as if he had foreseen it.

That's an amazing move!

Suddenly, He Changyuan stopped tapping with his index finger and clicked a few times on the control panel. A few seconds later, the rear cargo door light went out!
