Great Wilderness Demon Lord
Chapter 39 Defending the Ice City
The general offensive of the Wolf Rong began with the sound of bugles.
The three wedge formations of cavalry charged forward simultaneously, the thunderous roar of the giant wolves stomping on the ice like muffled thunder rolling across the wasteland. The jackals on both sides roared deafeningly, carrying wooden ladders and battering rams, surging towards the ice wall like a tidal wave.
Arrows rained down first.
This time, the wolf-like cavalry were no longer stingy with their arrows; a dense rain of arrows covered the entire top of the wall. The defenders lay prone behind the battlements, the sound of arrows pounding against their shields like raindrops hitting banana leaves, and occasionally someone would groan as they were hit by an arrow.
"Hold on! Wait for them to get closer!" Xiao Yunlan shouted sharply.
Eighty steps, seventy steps, sixty steps...
The jackals had already rushed to the base of the wall, and the wooden ladders were piled heavily on top of it.
"Roll the log! Smash it!"
The last log was pushed off the wall and rolled down the sloping ice with a rumble, breaking several wooden ladders, and the jackals on the ladders fell with screams.
But more wooden ladders were added.
"Boiling water!"
The large pot was lifted, and scalding hot water was poured down. Immediately, a piercing scream rang out from below the wall, and the smell of scalding flesh mixed with the stench of blood filled the air.
But this can only delay things temporarily.
The wolf-riding cavalry had charged within thirty paces. They stopped firing arrows, instead taking off their scimitars and urging their giant wolves to leap up, their claws digging into the ice, attempting to jump directly onto the wall.
The first giant wolf successfully scaled the battlement, and the rider swung his sword, cutting down two defenders. Tieshan roared and charged forward, his spear piercing the wolf's throat, pushing both man and wolf off the wall.
But more giant wolves leaped up.
A chaotic fight broke out on the top of the wall.
Xiao Yunlan drew his sword.
Deep within his dantian, the crimson flames of the Courageous Demon surged to a boiling point, his fighting instincts sweeping through his entire body like a flood. He did not suppress it; instead, he guided this power to every part of his body.
With a flash of light, a wolf-riding rider who had just leaped onto the wall was cut down. With a backhand slash, another jackal leader was decapitated.
He moved across the wall like a ghost, his blade flashing and blood flying everywhere. There were no fancy moves, only the simplest and most direct slashes, thrusts, and sweeps; every strike aimed at a vital point, every slash took a life.
Blood splattered on his face and body, staining his Xuanjiao soft armor dark red.
The morale of the defending troops was boosted when they saw their commander's bravery.
Zhao Meng roared and led his men to block the gap on the left, while Tie Shan fought to the death on the right. Shi Biao's guards were like a fire brigade, rushing to wherever there was danger.
But the enemy forces were simply too numerous.
The ice wall was breached in several places, and wolf-like cavalry and jackals continued to surge onto its top. The defending troops retreated step by step, and the defensive line began to shrink.
Xiao Yunlan fought off the three jackals in front of him, and when he looked up, his heart sank.
The northeast corner was breached again, and more than ten Wolf Rong cavalrymen had leaped onto the wall, widening the gap. Tieshan led his men in a desperate counterattack, but they were outnumbered.
In the central section of the wall, Zhao Meng was surrounded and attacked by three wolf-like cavalrymen. He was struggling to defend himself, and his armor had been pierced with several wounds.
On the right, Shi Biao's guards have suffered more than half their losses and are still struggling to hold on.
The entire defense line is on the verge of collapse.
Xiao Yunlan took a deep breath, leaped onto the main battlement, raised his sword high, and roared, "Soldiers of Shuofeng Plain!"
His voice carried on the cold wind, drowning out the sounds of battle.
All the defenders, whether they were fighting or barely holding on, instinctively looked at him.
Xiao Yunlan pointed his blade northward, his voice hoarse yet piercing: "Three hundred miles behind us lies Zhenhuang Pass! Within the pass are our parents, wives, and children, our homeland!"
"If the wolf-like barbarians breach the city, we will all die! But before we die, we must bite off a piece of their flesh!"
"Today, I stand with you all, sharing life and death! The city stands, we stand; the city falls, we fall!"
He paused, then his eyes flashed with a resolute light: "If there is an afterlife, I will fight alongside you all again!"
As soon as he finished speaking, he leaped down from the main battlement, his blade flashing like a rainbow, heading straight for the gap in the northeast corner.
In that instant, it felt as if something within the hearts of all the soldiers guarding the wall had been ignited.
Exhaustion, fear, and despair were all washed away by a surge of scalding heat.
Zhao Meng roared, cleaving down an enemy cavalryman in front of him with a single stroke, and howled, "Follow the captain and kill!"
Tieshan, his eyes bloodshot, thrust his spear like a dragon, piercing through a Wolf Rong cavalryman: "Fight to the death!"
Shi Biao wiped the blood from his face and grinned, "Damn, it was worth it!"
The remaining defenders mustered their last strength, like a final burst of energy before death, and launched a counterattack against the enemy troops who surged onto the wall.
If the knife's edge gets dull, stab it with a gun; if the gun breaks, smash it with your fist; if your fist shatters, bite it with your teeth.
No one retreated, no one surrendered.
On the ice wall, every inch of land was bleeding, and every roar was filled with the will to die.
Just as this resonant feeling of facing death reached its peak, the golden halo representing "extreme emotion" deep within Xiao Yunlan's dantian, which had been dormant for a long time, suddenly trembled.
No, it's no longer gold.
The color of the halo began to change, like molten gold intertwined with scorching blood, eventually transforming into a dazzling and intense crimson-gold flame.
Within the flames, a blurry female silhouette slowly materialized.
She wore tattered battle robes, her long hair flowing, her eyes seemingly containing the shouts and roars of a thousand troops, yet also the most extreme longing and resolute determination in the world.
The Demon of Extreme Passion has awakened.
The crimson-gold flames rippled outwards, silently spreading across the entire ice wall.
At that moment, all the defenders felt the burning heat in their chests become clearer and more surging. New strength welled up in their exhausted bodies, the pain in their wounds seemed to lessen, and the weapons in their hands seemed to feel lighter.
That wasn't an improvement in strength, but a resonance of spirit, a burning belief that would never waver until death.
At the same time, a strange chill quietly spread through the enemy ranks.
Fear began to creep into the eyes of the jackal warriors, and their charge faltered. The giant wolves beneath the wolf-riding cavalry growled uneasily, and an inexplicable sense of unease rose within the riders.
Morale fluctuates, and so does the morale of the individual.
Xiao Yunlan sensed the awakening of the Extreme Emotion Demon.
The blade in his hand flashed even more fiercely, each strike carrying a heart-stirring decisiveness. He charged into the northeast corner of the breach, and with a swift stroke of his blade, three Wolf Rong cavalrymen fell one after another.
Tieshan followed closely behind, his spear like a poisonous dragon emerging from its cave, forcing the enemy troops at the breach to retreat.
The defense line has been stabilized for the time being.
But Xiao Yunlan knew that this was not enough.
The power of the Extreme Emotion Demon can only affect morale; it cannot change the reality of a vast disparity in troop strength. Only by capturing enemy generals and flags can the enemy army be truly defeated.
His gaze swept across the battlefield like lightning.
On the north bank, the burly wolf-riding centurion remained seated atop his giant wolf, coldly observing the battle. He was surrounded by dozens of elite guards.
Catch the thief first to catch the king.
Xiao Yunlan took a deep breath and said to Tieshan, "Hold this place and wait for me to come back."
Before Tieshan could respond, he had already leaped off the ice wall and landed on the ice outside the wall.
"Captain!" came a cry of alarm from the top of the wall.
Without turning his head, Xiao Yunlan charged towards the enemy ranks with his sword.
